A smorgasbord of artistic endeavors is offered in venues across Adelaide courtesy of this biennial event. Aiming to break new ground, Australian and international artists turn out in force for ten days. They present theatre, music, dance, visual art, aboriginal culture and much more. Quite a few of the shows and exhibitions are free. This festival is held at the same time as Fringe, and the two spectacles - as well as the warm weather - draw masses of people into the town center.

One of the top historic motoring events, this one-day drive features more than 1,600 classic cars. The 60 kilometer scenic journey starts in a reserve at West Beach. It winds up at the National Motor Museum in the Adelaide Hills town of Birdwood, where the festivities continue throughout the day. Only motor vehicles built between 1945 and 1971 are allowed to join the run. Entry forms are available online or by contacting the organizers.

This is a summer event for those a lot of stamina and a love for alternative music. Touring around the country each summer and created by radio station Triple J, this music festival brings together the hottest Australian and international acts in a marathon day of musical performances. Attendees are sardined together with thousands of others trying to catch their favourite acts. In previous years, crowds have been sprayed by fire engine water hoses just to keep the temperature down! See the website for further details.

The Clipsal 500 Adelaide V8 Supercar race is an event that truly makes Adelaide 'Motorsport City', with the largest national motorsport carnival in Australia, attended by more than a quarter of a million fans and viewed by tens of millions via the national and international television broadcast. The Clipsal 500 Adelaide, a race over two legs - each leg, 78 laps of the east Adelaide street circuit - is the highlight of a four-day racing extravaganza that attracts nearly 255,600 spectators. The 4 days include motor racing, aircraft acrobatics, and 4 after-race concerts. Clipsal Adelaide is truly Adelaide's high-octane party of the year.

Set among the rolling hills of Mount Compass, this annual charity event was created by a local dairy farmer. Each July, Sir Topham Hat (better known as "The Fat Controller") pays a visit to Australia to inspect the railways at Port Dock Station Railway Museum. Join Sir Topham as he makes sure steam engines Bub, Bob and Ron are behaving themselves. Help find the Fat Controller's marmalade, make a "Friends of Thomas" badge and ride a train behind Bub, Bob, or big engine Ron.

Marking Greek Independence Day, this annual event is a top occasion to sample Hellenic culture. Apart from the many food and wine stalls, the two-day spread also offers live music, folk dancing, rides and fireworks. Major Greek performers fly over to entertain the open-armed crowds. About 50,000 people turn out for the festivities each year. Held in the picturesque west parklands, the party is within easy reach from the Adelaide city centre.

This is the largest Cornish festival of its type in the world, held in the Yorke Peninsula "Copper Triangle" towns of Moonta, Wallaroo and Kadina. Cornish and Welsh immigrants moved here in the 1840s, with copper mining at its peak in the 1860s. The climate has meant great preservation of original buildings and relics. This festival attracts up to 100,000 visitors. Attend the Village Green Fare (held simultaneously with the same event in Cornwall, England), the Surrey Dance, learn how to crimp a Cornish pasty and delight at the pipe bands.

Drawing on help from Adelaide's top restaurants, McLaren Vale wineries put on an eye-popping wining and dining event. Almost anything that lives in the ocean is on the menu here from Moreton Bay bugs to barbecued swordfish. The choice of reds and whites is even more imposing. Start the tour at the McLaren Vale and Fleurieu Visitor Centre, where you can pick up a festival souvenir glass and get directions to participating wineries.

Packed with restaurants, cafes and pubs, Norwood's premier boulevard, The Parade, is an able host of this extravaganza. Revellers can sample reds and whites from SA's top wineries, such as Wirra-Wirra and Hardy's and feast on a plethora of Australian and international dishes. Live bands serve up jazz, blues and rock. About 50,000 people flood the street each year for the annual merrymaking, just a short drive east of the Adelaide city centre. Admission is free. The parade is held every March.

Adelaide's uproarious Schutzenfest is the world's second largest German shooting festival after the one in Hannover. More than 30,000 people take part in the revelry each year, held over two days west of the city centre in Bonython Park. Highlights include hearty food and ales, Oompah bands, folk dancing, local pop groups and, of course, a shooting competition. The festivities wind up with a flurry of fireworks. It is likely to be very hot and sunny at this time of year, so wear a hat and bring sunscreen. Admission: Adults AUD10; children under 14 free.
