The Adelaide Cup is South Australia's most prestigious horse race and has been since a flier named "Falcon" led the first field home in 1864. The race—a 3,200 metre handicap—has been run at Morphettville since 1876. Big race day is a public holiday in South Australia, and each year thousands of race-goers line the track or lounge in hospitality suites, many dressed in swish outfits and outlandish hats.
