The festival begins with the launching of balloons at certain schools in the city and in Rio Ranch. Various events are held each day at various venues. There are races, choreographed balloon shows, co-ordinated mass ballooning shows, fireworks, wine tasting, magic shows and more. Come join the fun in the "Duke City" for annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, an event lasting nine days through the first two weekends in October. Billed as the world's most photographed event, see why more than one million visitors flock to Albuquerque each fall to witness spectacular dawn skyscapes as 1,000 balloons color the sky during mass ascensions. The fiesta features special shape balloons with exclusive mass ascensions, flying competitions, and the popular nighttime "Glowdeo." Entertainment and food abound at the annual Corrales Harvest Festival. Just drive into downtown Corrales and forget about your diet. Everything here is homegrown or homemade, and there is a plethora of vegetables and fruits available at the growers market. On stage you can enjoy the music from local talent and if you need your 15 minutes of fame, enter the watermelon eating contest. Food and wine come together at this festival that takes place at the Balloon Fiesta Park. Wine tasting is a major event, where you get to sample wines from the top state wineries and learn how to identify the different flavors and how to match them with the right food. Seminars are also conducted by wine connoisseurs and expert chefs. A grand dinner is held, where you can enjoy a great meal with a suitable wine over some jazz music.
