Few American cities have been able to preserve their history the way Albuquerque has. The original town center, Old Town Plaza is surrounded by structures built in the early 1700s. The longevity of these buildings is a testament to the soundness of their construction. Adobe walls, some more than two feet thick, were built from the very soil upon which they sit. Even though a thriving 21st century city bustles beyond the walls of Old Town, once you enter the plaza, you are transported to another place and time.

One of the best ways to experience this area is through a guided walking tour, and the Albuquerque Museum offers an excellent one. The tour offers a narrated history as you stroll around the central plaza. Many visitors prefer seeing this historic district at their own pace. If you choose the self-guided tour, don't leave out a stop at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History. Then have lunch in an Old Town café, and visit any of the more than 100 shops and galleries. Tiguex Park, on the west side of Old Town, offers a place to rest after a stroll through the Albuquerque Museum Sculpture Garden. A visitor could easily take half a day to see the traveling and permanent exhibits in the museum.

Tiguex Park

After a long day of walking around Old Town, touring the New Mexico Museum of Natural History or attending meetings downtown, find a quiet spot under a massive cedar tree in this old park. Sitting between the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and the Albuquerque Museum, this park is spacious enough to host soccer and a friendly game of neighborhood football. There always seems to be a game of hoops taking place on one of the park's four basketball courts.
