At the heart of this vibrant business district is Civic Plaza, a popular place for local business people to go when they want to enjoy a brown bag lunch or grab a bite from one of the many pushcart vendors. In the shadows of the high-rise buildings, this gathering area is lined with little shops and cafes. In the summer months, the city of Albuquerque hosts Summerfest, the place to go for entertainment with international flare. To the east of Civic Plaza is the Albuquerque Convention Center, a venue teeming with activities and events year round. South of the convention center is the Albuquerque Convention and Visitors Bureau. Downstairs, in the basement of the visitor's bureau, you'll discover the Galeria, an assortment of specialty shops and boutiques. One block south of the Galeria is Central Avenue, which flourished right after the opening of Route 66. No visit to Downtown would be complete without a stop at the KiMo Theater. This Pueblo-Deco picture palace was the epitome of entertainment when it was built, and was restored to its original condition during 1999 and 2000.

Downtown

Albuquerque
United States
The hub of business and government activity in the city is the bustling downtown area. The Civic Plaza also plays host to myriad other activities and during summer months, Summerfest is held. This is a celebration of New Mexico's many cultures that showcases the food, music and dance of a different ethnic group every Saturday. While the Civic Plaza is downtown's outdoor venue, the KiMo Theater, renovated in 1999-2000, is the city's crown jewel of indoor venues for the performing arts. The Hyatt Regency, one of the city's newest luxury hotels dominates the downtown skyline. With two lounges and a restaurant that offers fine dining, this is the ultimate hotel for the business traveler.

This architectural gem earned its unusual name when Isleta Pueblo governor, Pablo Abeita, suggested KiMo, which means "king of its kind" The theater's pueblo/deco architectural style and lavish interior murals make it a true picture palace. Built in 1927 it was one of the main stopping centers during the glory days of Route 66 (Central Avenue). Young entertainers who graced its stage included the likes of Vivian Vance, Gloria Swanson, Tom Mix and Ginger Rogers. The KiMo seats 700 comfortably with an orchestra pit for 30-40 musicians.

Route 66

Route 66 was commissioned in 1926 and was finished just before World War II. Only parts of the original highway still exist, but there is a great trend to restore and maintain sections of this historic road. In Albuquerque, remnants of an age gone by still cling to life on what is now Central Avenue. You will find the Route 66 Diner, the Duran Drugstore, and the newly restored KiMo Theater.
