Amsterdam's largest green areas are on the edge of town. The Amsterdamse Bos is easy to find, with boating lakes, an open-air theatre and large playground. While nature lovers may enjoy a beautiful walk through the woods, plane spotters can watch low-flying aircraft coming from Schiphol. The Amsterdamse Bos is also where you'll find the Bos Museum, which has maps of the park, including walking routes, and Geitenhouderij Ridammerhoeve, a goat farm with 120 goats and loads of adorable kids. It also sells bio-dynamic goat's milk, cheeses and ice-cream, and has a small recreation area and sandpit.

Back in the sixties, one sweet lady took in a stray cat and her kittens. Her house soon became too small for all the cats that followed and she moved to a houseboat in one of Amsterdam's lively canals. Even though cats hate water, they flourished in their new home and it since became a cat shelter where cats can go their own way, are not confined to cages and walk around like little captains. It is a unique and remarkable place. Two hours a day tourists are very welcome to come aboard and see this amazing shelter for themselves. -Sandy Hayes

Horse riding in the Hollandsche Manège (Dutch horse riding school) is a pleasant leisure activity for a free Wednesday afternoon or Saturday morning. Besides horse riding, you can enjoy a cup of coffee and a newspaper in the marvelous café, which is decorated with gold and garlands. Hollandsche Manège was built in 1882 and follows the design of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. A stately, semicircular entrance leads you to the riding area, where you can smell the horses; there are always girls busy with saddles, brushes, water and food for them. You can only ride inside here; if you prefer riding outside, you should go to Amsterdamse Bos.

Just a 15-minute train ride from Amsterdam, attractive Haarlem is a wonderful place to spend a day exploring. Start your visit at the Gothic and Renaissance-inspired Grote Markt (a 10-minute walk from the train station) located in the heart of the city. Nearby, also discover Sint Bavokerk. This massive Gothic church dwarfs the surrounding houses and shops and is therefore Haarlem's ultimate visual landmark. Afterwards head over to the city's chief attraction, the Frans Hal Museum located in the same house where the artist is believed to have spent his last and most successful years. An outstanding Flemish portraitist, he was thought to be even more talented than Rembrandt. If you get hungry, return to the Grote Markt for a selection of the city's best restaurants.

Molen van Sloten (The Sloten Windmill) dates from 1947 and pumps the water from the wetlands of Amsterdam-West into the canals. This is done with a very big windmill wheel. At the top of the mill you can watch a sequence about Rembrandt's life and the inspiration for his paintings. Rembrandt was the son of a windmill keeper, and you can see a wax statue of his mother here. If you climb the steep wooden stairs, you'll see the wheel running, hear the wind and feel like a mill keeper for a moment. Check website for details.

Pampus

Smallest Netherlands Island
Postbus 90
Amsterdam 1398 ZH
Netherlands

http://www.pampus.nl
pampus@pampus.nl
The island of Pampus was built at the end of 19th Century as part of the line of defense around the city borders-de Stelling van Amsterdam. Soldiers had a harsh time on the island, as the humidity level was high and the average temperature about ten degrees Celsius. The fort on the island never took part in any kind of warfare. The Stelling van Amsterdam became outdated with the development of new military weapons like fighter planes. Pampus hasn't served as fortification since 1933. To visit to Pampus you'll have to go to the castle Muiderslot in Muiden and take the ferry to Pampus.

Queen's Day, celebrated on April 30, is the most festive occasion of the year. Amsterdam is particularly famous for the all-out parties that commence. You will see plenty of orange on this day, as it represents the House of Orange, which is the name of the current Dutch dynasty. The current monarch visits towns on Queen's Day where special celebrations often in the form of demonstrations of old-fashioned dances and crafts take place. What makes Queen's Day truly unique, however, are the stalls set up by the roadside. Queen's Day is known as a 'free market' day when people sell household goods they no longer need: the Dutch equivalent of our garage sales. See website for yearly details.

There are more bikes than inhabitants in this country, and this central bike agency is one of the best. The store also offers guided bike tours and lends bikes out on hire. See website for rental rates, tour info, and list of bikes for sale.

The tramway museum gives visitors the chance to relive the past by offering actual rides in vintage trams rather than just displaying them. Visitors can really appreciate what it was like to ride in these trams during summer months, letting the fresh air in through open windows and doors. The trams run along a former railway track by the Amsterdam Forest, the largest recreational area in Amsterdam. Several attractions in the forest can easily be reached on foot from the tram stops. There are trams from cities all over Europe: Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Vienna, Kassel, Berlin and Prague.

In 1981, this Flemish cultural centre was opened on the Nes. De Brakke Grond helps to integrate the culture of Flemish society into the Netherlands. Moreover, it greatly promotes Flanders. Lots of activities highlighting the Flemish element of Dutch culture take place here. This is done through tours, concerts and exhibitions, but also through literary nights and lectures. It provides a nice overview of all that Flanders has to offer.

This large, green oasis was created in the second half of the 19th century, and named after the poet Joost van den Vondel (1587-1679), a statue of whom was unveiled here in 1867. Today Vondelpark, one of the most-visited spots in the city, is a restful haven for citizens away from the city's chaos. Come here for inline skating, let your children play in the large playground or have a cup of coffee on one of the four terraces.

The best way to explore the (inner) city of Amsterdam is to walk around. Compared to other capitals, this is a small one; the compact inner city and its sights can be discovered within a few square kilometres. Walking tours are arranged by the VVV tourist office, some with pre-recorded audio guides and a city map. There are evening walks, mystery tours, walks around the Red Light District and there is a Journey through Jordaan among others.

Miffy is probably one of the most famous 'book heroes' in The Netherlands and her adventures are read to children by parents and at playschools. All the famous books by Dick Bruna with the colourful, simple little drawings of Miffy can also be bought in this shop.
