Each didgeridoo has its own tone and sound —size and shape are key elements — and each one is a hand-painted work of art. The shop offers instructional books, videos and CDs for those who are just learning to play the instrument. Demonstrations, workshops and private lessons are also available. The shop has an extra space, used for exhibitions, cultural events such as readings, film evenings, concerts and jamming sessions.

This respected jeweller can be found next to the flower market in the centre of Amsterdam. The shop is situated in a lovely building right on the corner of the Leidsestraat. Like other jewellers, Ace & Spyer sells great looking rings, necklaces and bracelets. Remarkably, this shop sells watches spanning a huge price range. Cheap Swatch watches can be bought here, yet it is also a good location to know should you be searching for a more expensive one, such as a Breitling or Tag-Heuer. The interior of the shop is well kept and the service is excellent.

The Albert Cuyp, situated near the famous former Heineken brewery, is Amsterdam's largest and busiest daily market. From Monday to Saturday it is packed with local shoppers rather than tourists. You can buy anything here, from fresh fish to fresh fruit; from fabric to footwear - and of course you'll have to try the delicious traditional Dutch herring with onions and pickles. You can also find many exotic foods and herbs at this market, stocked by and for the non-Dutch Amsterdam community. Generally speaking the prices are low but make sure you are getting value for money. By visiting the Albert Cuyp market you'll get a taste of real multi-cultural Amsterdam streetlife.

Established a decade ago in the middle of the "X-Files" hype, this small shop offers products and information for both the hardened alien/conspiracy theorist and for the less fanatical alien-curious. This is also a good place to go if you want information on dance parties in Amsterdam. All this is accompanied by thumping trance music and disturbingly dark lighting.

This bookstore may well be the largest source of English books on the Continent and is probably the cheapest place to buy new books in Amsterdam. Their customer service is great, as staff do not just sell the books, but are also tasked with buying them. So if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask, as they are very clued up. Between the basement and the second floor, they stock hardbacks, paperbacks and magazines on almost any subject, so there definitely is something here for everyone. The books are a fantastic value, especially for students who get a 10 percent discount with some ID.

When you set foot in De Bakkerswinkel you feel like you are entering an old French bakery. The warm smell of baguettes, petit pains au chocolat and big round provençal bread, prepared with olives, garlic, thyme and sun-dried tomatoes tempts even the most strong-willed. De Bakkerswinkel uses traditional French recipes for its goods and there's plenty of space for hungry customers to take a seat. You can fill your stomach with a sandwich, quiche, salad or soup, and enjoy a cup of tea. In the summertime, the little terrace opens up for outside use. You can rent De Bakkerswinkel for a special event, private dinner or to take high tea with some friends.

De Slegte, situated in the city's busiest shopping street, is one of the largest bookshops in Amsterdam. It offers an enormous amount of literature, spanning various languages and also including old maps and prints. It's not all that cosy as such, but the shop is very well-suited to bargain hunting, as they offer a good mix of the latest publishers' surplus stock, a huge selection of second-hand books (of which many have antiquarian value), and school and academic books.

There are more than thirty exclusive stores here, spread over three floors, for instance Mango, DKNY, Timberland, Hugo Boss, Levi's, Kipling and Replay. The big glass and steel tower has a staircase, an escalator and a glass lift, ferrying customers to the top. There, you will have an amazing view of Amsterdam's inner city. Magna Plaza is situated behind the Koninklijk Paleis on Dam square. This former main post office, built in neo-Gothic style according to a design by C.H. Peters in 1898, would feel at home in a fairytale. Inside, it has a large dome-shaped top, beautiful colonnades and decorated sculptures. Because of its interior, facade and historical value, it belongs to the top 100 buildings on the National Heritage list. There are more than forty exclusive shops and two restaurants. The atmosphere in Magna Plaza can be characterised as unique and relaxed. Worth mentioning separately—the small cheese and delicacatessen shop on the ground floor, the shoe shiner and the classical music sometimes played live at the weekends.

This famous British fashion brand also has its own establishment in Amsterdam. The interior of this rather small shop boasts a cosy atmosphere with wooden floors, rather reminiscent of a cabin. All the pieces displayed here are designed by McGregor and have their own easily recognised style. Their lines include a great deal of leisure wear such as sweaters and shirts, but they also sell some attractive, good quality suits at very reasonable prices. In addition, the shop has a wide range of McGregor accessories, including shoes and socks. Considerable attention is paid to customer service.

The department store Metz & Co was founded in 1891 and is nowadays the property of Liberty's of London. Located in the busy shopping street the Leidsestraat, Metz & Co offers a broad range of goods. It is a great place to go if you are looking for high quality or unique gifts. You can buy gimmicks, beautiful glassware, exclusive clothing and various pots, pans and kitchen utensils here. The latter you can find in the basement. If you decide to pop in, be sure to visit the upper floor. The view from this top floor is magnificent - customers can enjoy a great view of the canals, roofs and gardens of the inner city buildings and can see quite a long way into the distance, especially on a clear day. A pleasant complement to such a view might be a cappuccino and/or a light meal.
