Every year, Amsterdam is visited by thousands of tourists from all over the world, all with their own budgets. Since Amsterdam offers hotels in all price classes, each and every tourist is guaranteed to find a good place to sleep, whether they have a lot to spend or not.

For those visitors who can really splash out and are willing to do so, there is the Amstel Inter Continental, in the very heart of the city: the best, the most luxurious and of course the most expensive of all. This is the hotel where film stars and royalty stay. It's very well located, near to the old centre, important theatres, museums, restaurants and clubs.

Dam and Surroundings

The Dam, with its square and Royal Palace, is one of the most-visited tourist areas in Amsterdam, and of course there are plenty of hotels around this area. Among the more expensive ones is the Crowne Plaza Amsterdam City Centre, not far from Central Station. From here you can easily get to the boats for a tour of the canals. Also close to the Station is Golden Tulip Barbizon Palace. On Dam Square itself there is the beautiful Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky. Die Port van Cleve is somewhat less expensive and is located just behind the Royal Palace and the famous Bijenkorf, just like the Tulip Inn Dam Square which also belongs in this price category. For those who are on a tight budget and yet want to stay in this part of the city, there are hotels like De Korenaer and De Stadhouder. Both are very centrally located and you can visit all major tourist places on foot from here. Also worth trying is De Gerstekorrel.

Leidseplein & Rembrandtplein

From Dam Square, it's not far to get to Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein. Both squares are really cozy in summertime, when the weather is nice and the terraces are full of people. This is also the place to be if you're into clubbing. In this area you can find expensive hotels such as the American Hotel and Amsterdam Marriott Hotel. You can also find hotels belonging to the Golden Tulip chain here. There are the Golden Tulip Amsterdam Centre and the Golden Tulip Schiller Hotel, right on Rembrandt Square. For the younger ones among us who like to go from youth hostel to youth hostel, there is the comfortable City Hostel Vondelpark, very close to the Vondelpark. Also in this area you can find the very reasonably priced Hotel Abba.

De Jordaan

Close by is the famous workers' district De Jordaan. This district used to be a rather tough area, but during the last couple of years it has become one of the most-wanted residential areas, full of yuppies, while the original inhabitants have moved away to more spacious areas on the outskirts. Close to this area you can find the Cok City Hotel.

Museumkwartier

The Museumkwartier is the area around Museumplein (Museum Square) where you find all of Amsterdam's major museums within walking distance, i.e. the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum (Municipal Museum). There are both expensive and more moderately priced hotels here. The Amsterdam Hilton and Bilderberg Garden Hotel are obviously among the more expensive ones, whereas the four-star AMS Hotel Lairesse is already a bit more moderately priced, just like the Ambassade Hotel along Herengracht. The Canal Crown Hotel and Cok Business Class Hotel are more or less equally priced, while the AMS hotels are less expensive. This chain has a number of hotels in Amsterdam, such as the AMS Hotel Holland, AMS Hotel Terdam and AMS Museum Hotel. For those who like to be in a quieter area, Hotel Heemskerk, behind the Concertgebouw (Concert Building) will do just fine.

River Gaasp & Airport Hotels

Along the river Gaasp you will find AC Hotel Amsterdam, and the less expensive Belfort Hotel which is located near the ring road. For the business traveller who needs to stay close to the airport, there is the Amsterdam Airport Schiphol Hilton, just two minutes from the main terminal. The rooms are all provided with soundproof windows, so don't worry about the noise. You can be in the city centre within 15 minutes. There is also the Sheraton Amsterdam Airport Hotel & Conference Center. Do keep in mind that most of the hotels in Amsterdam charge 5% city tax, which is often not included in prices of rooms given.

Amsterdam's Centraal Station dates from the year 1889, when it was first used for the transport of goods. It was designed by the architect P.J.H. Cuypers - well known in his time, who also designed the Rijksmuseum. The building's foundation consists of 8,687 wooden piles, because of the wetlands around 't IJ. The original construction has been rebuilt more than once, due to rapidly expanding traffic and rail transport. The Central Station terminal has recently been restored and can be admired in its original style.

Dam

War Memorial
In Old City
Amsterdam 1012 JS
Netherlands
+31 (0)20 201 8800 (Tourist Information Centre)
In the 13th Century the river Amstel was dammed here and on the banks of the river a small fishing community was founded, called Amstelredam. Boats could unload their freight here and alongside the Damrak. When the Nieuwe Kerk was rebuilt and the Royal Palace (originally the town hall) built, the enclosed square served as the city centre, both socially and for administrative purposes. The city was governed and law and order maintained from here, as can be seen in pictures of public executions on a scaffold in front of the town hall. After WWII, the War Memorial was erected on another square on the Dam, which is now a gathering place for thousands of people and numerous pigeons.

Jordaan

Amsterdam
Netherlands
Built in 1612 during the expansion of the city, the Jordaan neighbourhood is well known all over the country for its specific street life, corny songs, sarcastic humour and working-class mentality. But this is mere nostalgia. Most of the Jordanezen (the native inhabitants) left some years ago for improved housing in neighbouring cities like Almere and Purmerend. Nowadays, it is a district with a lot of students and young urban professionals. The Jordaan accommodates many bars and cosy restaurants and is like a village in the big city. It is located between Brouwersgracht, Prinsengracht, Raamstraat, and Marnixstraat.

In the mid-17th Century the painter Jacob van Campen was given the assignment to design a new town hall. The city council wanted a grand symbol for their leading role in Europe at that time - Holland's Golden Age, as well as economic and civic power. The building had to make this clear for everyone to see. The town hall became the biggest in Europe. In 1808 the building was 'transformed' into a Royal Palace by the brother of Napoleon Bonaparte, Louis, king of the region during the French occupation. Nowadays, it is still a royal residence. The Dutch royal family, the Oranje-Nassau's, receive royalty and dignitaries at the palace. The new king or queen also present themselves to the citizens of the Netherlands from the balcony of the palace.

Leidseplein

Amsterdam
Netherlands
The Leidseplein is very crowded both by day and by night. When the sun is shining the terraces are quickly filled. Street performers entertain the public, mainly consisting of tourists, with acrobatic acts and music. At night the public changes: Amsterdammers go out here to celebrate their weekend, to visit the theatres, cinemas, and clubs. The bars and clubs, such as Escape, close here after 5am. And next morning, only a few hours later, it starts all over again: the first tourists settle down on the terraces.

Amsterdam
Netherlands
A pleasant city square bordered by some of the most popular clubs and cafés in Amsterdam, Rembrandtplein is a favorite of travelers itching to experience a taste of the city's nightlife. When the sun is shining, rows upon rows of outdoor summer terraces seat customers looking for a quick bite to eat or a place to begin their night out. Street performers entertain the public, mainly consisting of tourists, with acrobatic acts and music. Café Schiller Bar at Rembrandtplein 26 is one of the area's oldest and most popular spots for summer dining and drinking.

VondelPark

City Center Green
vondelpark
Amsterdam 1054 ET
Netherlands
+31 20 523 7790
This large, green oasis was created in the second half of the 19th century, and named after the poet Joost van den Vondel (1587-1679), a statue of whom was unveiled here in 1867. Today Vondelpark, one of the most-visited spots in the city, is a restful haven for citizens away from the city's chaos. Come here for inline skating, let your children play in the large playground or have a cup of coffee on one of the four terraces.
