Café American

Old Dutch grand café
Leidsekade 97
Amsterdam 1017 PN
Netherlands
+31 (0)20 556 3009
http://www.amsterdamamerican.c...
Calling it a cafe really doesn't do justice to Cafe American—this is not only the oldest Grand Cafe in the Netherlands, but both the building and its interior are listed monuments and it's easy to see why. The interior is impressive, to say the least, with beautiful stained glass windows, huge murals and quite stunning chandeliers. An antique reading table is also present, well-stocked with the latest newspapers and magazines. In true American style, the cafe has a separate non-smoking area, and to top it off, there is a large terrace that gives a good view of the Leidseplein. This place is definitely one to visit.

Café de Waard

Cozy Terrace Bar With Good Music
Leidseplein 14
Amsterdam, NH 1017 PT
Netherlands

No its not a Gaulish tavern you would find in an Asterix comic, yet you find the mascot bearing an uncanny resemblance to the comic superhero and there are comic strips all over the place. Coming to the food, it's a good mix of European and American fare with all the flavors intact and serves the best nocturnal meal money can buy. A popular hangout with the night birds, the bar is always buzzing with energy, loads of action and music. Adjacent to the bar is an open terrace where you can wine and dine in the evening breeze. The central location of De Waard makes it the obvious choice for many locals and tourists alike. When hunger strikes at unearthly hours, De Waard's doors are open for you.

Dimitri's

For breakfast, lunch and dinner
Prinsenstraat 3
Amsterdam 1015 DA
Netherlands
+31 20 627 9393
This cafe is located in the city centre and has a very colourful and stylish interior. You can enjoy a delicious breakfast, a quick lunch or a small dinner here. This is where you will find one of the best club sandwiches in town. The specialities here include delicious salads. You can expect to be served high quality food at reasonable prices. Designer Boreck Sipeck tried to put as many tables as possible into this tiny rectangular room-and succeeded.

Evita Resturant/ Steakhouse

Steakhouse with a splendid view
Oudebrugsteeg 16
Amsterdam, NH 1012 JP
Netherlands
+31 20 626 1259
Located on the second floor of a monumental premises, Evita is your classic steakhouse albeit with a sophisticated ambiance. The eclectic eatery borrows heavily from the South American and Spanish cuisine and consistently innovates on its gourmet delights. The assortment of charcoal grilled meat is delectable and so are the crunchy salads and the sinful desserts. The beef pepper steak is a hot favorite and the barbecued chicken gives it a tough fight. But the real puller here is the panoramic view of the city at night. Amongst the dime a dozen steakhouses mushrooming all over Amsterdam, Evita stands out for more reasons than one.

Passage

Go Dutch!
Nieuwendijk 224
Amsterdam, NH 1012 MX
Netherlands

In Amsterdam you have few restaurants that serve cheap and good Dutch food, and De Passage scores on both. Reasonably priced, this eatery offers huge servings of truly authentic preparations. Try the juicy Spare Ribs or the yummy Grilled Salmon with lemon butter. The pastas, salads and fries are also worth relishing. Warm French bread acts as a perfect accompaniment for the main course and Tiramisu is ideal for dessert. The martinis and wines will help in combating the excessive spice and grease. It's a little cramped and stuffy in here but the food more than makes up for it.

Three Sisters / New York Steak House

Much at Steak
Rembrandtplein 17
Amsterdam, NH 1017 CT
Netherlands
+31 20 627 5660
The strangely christened Three Sisters Steak House is a popular hangout amongst locals and tourists alike, for its cheap and authentic steaks. After a stint with the beer or wine downstairs, head here for the almost perfect steaks, prime ribs and other grilled meat varieties. Even something as staid as an omelet looks tantalizing on the tables of this cramped but clean eatery. Don't forget to bite into the crispy fries with a dash of mayo and wrap up with a huge piece of chocolate cake. Three Sisters has another outlet at Leidseplein, which is as crowded and sought after.

l'Opera Grand Cafe

Night at l'Opera
Rembrandtplein 27-29
Amsterdam, NH 1017
Netherlands
+31 20 620 4754
http://www.l-opera.nl/
Situated near the bustling Rembrantplein, this popular restaurant and bar fills up quickly with both visitors and locals alike. The expansive outdoor seating area is ideal during nice weather, while the indoor levels offer a pleasant alternative in the cold or rain (and the plush seating and art-deco decor may draw you in from the crowds even in the warm summer months). The restaurant serves both lunch and dinner, and stays open into the early hours of the morning for those who want to continue their fun after hours. You can find traditional contemporary favorites like salads, sandwiches, and steaks.
