Trendy fusion food |
Prinsenstraat 10 Amsterdam 1015 DC Netherlands +31 (0)20 428 2455 |
This popular fusion restaurant is a relatively new addition to Amsterdam's eateries, having opened in 1998. Just to prove its commitment to the fusion principle, even the interior is a mishmash of new and old, blended together nicely to create a memorable dining experience. The menu combines Eastern and Western influences to good effect and this restaurant is billed as Demi-veg, which indicates a concentration on fish and vegetarian dishes. Add to this a nice wine list, and the final result is a restaurant well worth visiting. Fusion isn't for everybody, but you'll never know unless you try it. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Tasty Tandoori |
Korte Leidsedwarsstraat 15 Amsterdam, NH 1017 Netherlands +31 20 624 2211 http://www.akbar.nl/ |
Located in the Leidseplein, this popular restaurant features a range of Indian cuisine, from classic favorites to innovative treats. Unlike many of the other Indian restaurants in the area, Akbar picks quality over speed, so be prepared to sit down for a full meal. Start off with some samosas or prawns, then pick from one of the set dinners or sample smaller plates for more variety. If you are looking for vegetarian options, you'll find the most choices with a few side dishes instead of a full entree. For dessert, you can top it all off with creamy pudding or ice cream. The restaurant also has a full selection of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Review © 2007, Wcities |

In the heart of De Pijp, on Ceintuurbaan, you'll find the Chinese-Surinamese restaurant Albina. This is the friendliest, most delicious roti shop in Amsterdam and offers excellent quality for the prices. This is a very popular spot amongst locals. The restaurant reminds one of a snack bar, but the Surinam food makes Albina well worth a visit. Be sure to try the Black Pudding! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Alcantara is a Portuguese restaurant and tapas bar, located in the Jordaan. The building was originally a cinema, still recognizable because of the projection room above the entrance hall. Alcantara serves Portuguese dishes from the cuisine bourgeoise - a substantial cuisine with influences from Catalonia and France. The courses are spiced compared to traditional Portuguese cuisine, but are not particularly exotic. A wide variety of Portuguese drinks are also available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Run by a young couple, An specializes in authentic Japanese cuisine. The open kitchen provides guests a peep into the chef's quick cooking styles. The ambiance puts you at ease instantly as you mull over the menu. The place doesn't have a liquor license, so bring your own along. The fare is well-priced with decent portions. A take away counter is at hand for those who are on the move. Give An a try, when in Grachtengordel. There's a fat chance you'll enjoy yourself. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Very Italian |
Hemonystraat 18 Amsterdam 1074 BP Netherlands +31 (0)20 676 4182 |
Nestled in the happening Pijp area of the city, this Italian eatery is a haven for pastas and pizzas. Bruschettas, carpaccio, Toscan Beef, and other Italian preparations feature on the menu. Portions tend to be small for the prices but the food quells all disappointment. The wines and beer keep spirits high, though, the rude staff can ruin your day. The place gets crowded in the evenings, so be prepared to wait for a table as reservations are not accepted. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Steak Paradise |
Leidekruisstraat 7 Amsterdam, NH 1017 RE Netherlands +31 20 622 3375 http://www.losargentinos.nl info@losargentinos.nl |
The Dutch have always had a thing for Argentinean cuisine and Los Argentinos is a commendable addition to that. Saying that the steaks here are good is stating the obvious. Apart from steaks there are lip-smacking cutlets, fries, meat and veggies in sour cream, garlic and tomato based sauces. The sea-food lovers can have a field day as well, what with lobsters, shrimps, salmon all dolled up to perfection. The cold salads are perfectly sour and creamy with lots of dressing thrown in good measure. The ambiance is warm, cozy and comforting with touches of South American architecture(the famed brick walls) and furnishings. You can enjoy your steaks with live music here on weekends. It can't get better than this, can it? Review © 2007, Wcities |

When you set foot in De Bakkerswinkel you feel like you are entering an old French bakery. The warm smell of baguettes, petit pains au chocolat and big round provençal bread, prepared with olives, garlic, thyme and sun-dried tomatoes tempts even the most strong-willed. De Bakkerswinkel uses traditional French recipes for its goods and there's plenty of space for hungry customers to take a seat. You can fill your stomach with a sandwich, quiche, salad or soup, and enjoy a cup of tea. In the summertime, the little terrace opens up for outside use. Typical Dutch cuisine |
Leidsekruisstraat 28 Amsterdam 1017 RJ Netherlands +31 (0)20 627 0521 |
This small, cozy restaurant provides a nice change and a chance to sample traditional Dutch cuisine. It is popular among locals (especially the student fraternity) for its good prices, delicious food and casual atmosphere. "Typical Dutch cuisine" may sound a little confusing: imagine vegetables mixed together with other vegetables to make... mashed up vegetables. It may not sound very appetizing, but you'll never know unless you try. This is a great place for everyone, but can prove especially enjoyable for tourists: meals take place at communal tables, which provides an opportunity to meet some very interesting people. The exterior has not been changed since this custom-house was built in 1901. Inside the ambiance is also being helped by the very high original steel rafters. At the 10-stool bar one is served by friendly people of both sexes, who also serve luncheon and dinner in this roomy place with a glazed veranda, a small raised platform where live music is played at times and a storey-high mezzanine perfectly fit for more private parties, or a rendezvous dinner with an old or new love. Every month a new special beer is introduced, Flemish or Dutch, sometimes from the IJ-brewery nearby. For lunch there are sandwiches and rolls, soup of the day. This joint has a reputation with the college crowd as a cool hangout. The decor comprises stained glass windows, wooden furniture and posters of upcoming cultural events. The vegetarian dishes, pies and the fries are popular, but regulars are obviously more drawn to the tea, beer and whisky. People come here to play cards, chess and pinball. Card competitions are also held here. The music played ranges from jazz and pop to metal. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A very old and queer place is the restaurant Eik en Linde. It's a typical Dutch 'brown' bar and its history dates back to 1858. It has photos and murals on the walls, which tell you various stories and take you back to the past. Food is quite nice and filling, and rest assured, it's easy on your pocket. The staff can be of help if you need them. When it's time to leave, try to look at your own watch as the clock behind can be very confusing, it runs backwards! Review © 2007, Wcities |

De Koe (The Cow) is a real bovine bonanza! Pictures of cows, sketches of cows, cow statues, and other assorted cow objects are abound. In order to keep it fresh, the paintings on the ceiling change sporadically showcasing new artists. For cocktails or beer, you can head straight upstairs to the bar, or dine in a small, comfortable setting downstairs. The food ranges from hot dishes, to pastas and salads. As locals and tourists alike frequent this restaurant for it's bubbly atmosphere, friendly service and tasty food, expect to wait upstairs at the bar before dining. Live bands play on the weekends. Cozy Terrace Bar With Good Music |

No its not a Gaulish tavern you would find in an Asterix comic, yet you find the mascot bearing an uncanny resemblance to the comic superhero and there are comic strips all over the place. Coming to the food, it's a good mix of European and American fare with all the flavors intact and serves the best nocturnal meal money can buy. A popular hangout with the night birds, the bar is always buzzing with energy, loads of action and music. Adjacent to the bar is an open terrace where you can wine and dine in the evening breeze. The central location of De Waard makes it the obvious choice for many locals and tourists alike. When hunger strikes at unearthly hours, De Waard's doors are open for you. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Restaurant Casa Perú is the first and, so far, only Peruvian restaurant in the Netherlands. It's established in a monumental building in the heart of Amsterdam, in which guests are treated to South American hospitality in a cosy, informal atmosphere. In Casa Perú, an extensive menu (with 76 dishes!) provides an overview of the variety of Peruvian cuisine—warm and cold dishes (such as the famous fish dish Ceviche De Pescado, home-made stews with beef and goat, stewed and baked seafood, some vegetarian dishes, chicken and fish and typical Peruvian cocktails (such as Pico Sour andChuchuhuasi). Real Spanish Food |
Lange Niezel 29 Amsterdam 1012 GS Netherlands +31 (0)20 622 3050 |
Centra is the place in which to sample authentic Spanish atmosphere, wine and tapas. The Formica tables, stacks of beer crates and fluorescent lighting all add to the authentic Spanish atmosphere. A showcase dominates part of the restaurant front, featuring a small bar with low barstools, serving tapas and drinks whilst guests wait for tables. Reservations are usually futile—it's always crowded here! Spanish waiters (or so they appear as they are clad in the traditional black-and-white) serve the delicious dishes in a somewhat hectic (but friendly) manner. The prices are not especially low, but the food on the other hand is worth it. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This is a cozy Thai restaurant on the Nieuwmarkt. This area of Amsterdam is littered with good little restaurants, most of them Chinese, so some Thai food comes as a nice change. Chao Phraya is quite popular, especially as a lunch restaurant. Rightfully so, as there is no greater joy than sitting in the sun on Niewmarkt scoffing down some fried rice with beef. Special mention has to go to the nice salads and the friendly service. The prices are also very reasonable. Review © 2007, Wcities |

China Grand is one of the better average-priced Chinese restaurants in Amsterdam, and is located on one of the city's main roads that lead to the centre. Its specialities are Szechuan and Cantonese cuisine. Any of these dishes is highly recommended and are made with beef, pork, lamb, chicken, seafood or vegetables. The various dishes with Szechuan sauce, a sweet and spicy sauce with vegetables, are tangy and tasty. Apart from the original Szechuan and Cantonese cuisine, China Grand also offers many other Chinese dishes, which are mostly a little bit cheaper than the ones mentioned before, as well as a lot of different Chinese rice-tables. This respected restaurant (ranked in the Dutch top 50) is to be found on the 23rd floor of the Okura Hotel, located in the immediate vicinity of Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Concertgebouw. From this floor, you will have an unbelievable view over the city of Amsterdam and its surrounding area. The Dantzig cafe-restaurant is within walking distance of the Rembrandtplein and Theater Carré. During the daytime it looks like a Parisian Grand Café where people walk in and out all the time. At night it serves as a very nice restaurant with an informal atmosphere. A classical theatre-like interior with some modern accents lurks within this cafe-restaurant, whilst outside Dantzig owns probably one of the largest terraces of Amsterdam. Sitting on this sometimes very busy terrace you have a wonderful view of the river Amstel without any traffic to bother you. The service is quick and the staff always smiling. This place is famous for incredible-looking cakes that taste heavenly. With two highly creative men behind the concept, some cakes look like they belong in a museum. And they do! Several museums in the Netherlands have exhibited these pastry-wonders that seem to come straight from the Madhatter's Tea Party. You can visit the beautiful patisserie in trendy neighborhood De Pijp and enjoy one of the numerous tastees. This place is just off the main tourist area, and all the better for it. For those who manage to find it, there are literally hundreds of different beers to choose from. To help give all that draught a bit of soft landing, they also serve food which is simple, tasty, and (fairly)cheap. The numerous sorts of Belgian beer, bottled or on tap, make it hard to choose, and will keep you on (or falling off) your seat till closing-time. This pub is low-key and very nice for a night of a little beer-experimenting in a friendly atmosphere. -Sandy Hayes Review © 2007, Wcities |

District V (five) is a very classy restaurant located in the heart of one of Amsterdam's most famous districts, 'De Pijp'. If you are going to have dinner here you should be warned that two things are a bit unusual. First of all they don't have a regular menu. Specialties of the day are written on a small blackboard and then dictated by your server. The menu usually includes a choice of three starters, three main courses and four desserts. Although your choices are somewhat limited, there is something here for just about everyone. Best French Toast in Amsterdam! |
Berenstraat 20 Amsterdam, NH 1016 GH Netherlands +31 206231048 |
Hein is a small and charming lunch cafe in Amsterdam's 9 Streets shopping area. Chef/owner Hein Jansen prepares everything herself in the small open kitchen, which customers must walk through to get to the seating area. There is a diverse set menu as well as daily specials. Thick Turkish yogurt with honey, crepes stuffed with chicken, quiche lorraine and fresh lentil salad are all worth trying, but the french toast is the real gem at this joint - pure homemade deliciousness! Hein is also open for private cooking lessons or dinner parties in the evenings, a minimum of 10 guests is required. -Shayne Gottdenker Review © 2007, Wcities |

Informal international restaurant |
Oude Waal 39336 Amsterdam 1011 BZ Netherlands +31 (0)20 624 3203 http://www.hemelsemodder.nl/ |
'Heavenly Mud' is the literal translation of the name of this establishment, located near the Nieuwmarkt on one of Amsterdam's oldest canals. This is a modern restaurant with a bright and inviting interior. Of course, it is also pleasant (weather permitting) to enjoy your meal outside. The menu is very international—Dutch, French, Italian and Oriental cuisine are all represented (including a variety of vegetarian dishes). The atmosphere makes it a hassle-free place for a casual meal. Several prix fixe menus are available daily. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Students and creative folk |
Spuistraat 189 Amsterdam 1012 VN Netherlands +31 20 638 9357 |
This is quite a large bar, located near Dam Square. It is close to a part of the University and is frequented by students. Schuim translates as "foam", which is probably an indication of their most commonly served drink: beer. Het Schuim is a bit more than your usual student hangout. It gets quite a creative crowd, especially in the evening when the age of the clientèle rises. It looks the part, with that typical "thrown together" interior that seems to be the norm for every trendy bar at the moment. The pictures on the wall, which is used as an art gallery, are changed regularly. Het Schuim will serve about six draught beers and somewhere around 15 bottled beers at any given time. There is almost always one beer that is heavy enough to knock out a small elephant. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This restaurant, located behind the Singel Flower Market, is known for its delicious French and Belgian cuisine. The ground floor is spacious and has an attached garden where one can dine. The top floor of the restaurant is suitable for holding parties and can accommodate 45 people. The mood is romantic and the service excellent. Het Tuynhuys offers a free glass of champagne if you book through the website, so don't forget to try that option. Review © 2007, Wcities |

High on the Hill |
Warmoesstraat 52 Amsterdam 1012 JG Netherlands http://www.hill-street-blues.nl/ chsb52a@xs4all.nl |
This coffee shop and bar is called Hill Street Blues, after the well-known TV series, and is located next door to a police station. The place is decorated with graffiti not only on the walls but also on the sofas and chairs. They serve coffee and a wide range of spirits, beer and liqueurs. You can also chill out while playing some pool, foosball, backgammon, chess or arcade games. Inquire at the "dealers" corner about the range of items on their Smokers Menu. Eminem had his photo taken on the Hill Street couch for the cover of his first album, so you may even bump in to someone famous here. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A busy zone |
Zeedijk 122-124 Amsterdam 1012 BB Netherlands +31 (0)20 625 6451 |
For a reasonably priced Chinese meal, step into Hoi Tin. From the outside, it looks like a shabby old place but the tasty preparations are a big savior. An extensive menu of more than 200 dishes makes selecting more interesting. Try the traditional Sweet and Sour Chicken or the black bean based dishes - they are really delicious. The popular eatery is packed most of the times, so if you want to catch a nice table, make sure you are one of the early birds. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Regional French food |
Amsteldijk 41 Amsterdam 1074 HV Netherlands +31 (0)20 679 1248 http://www.lehollandais.nl/ info@lehollandais.nl |
Le Hollandais serves regional French food and is located along the river Amstel, within walking distance from the Amstel Hotel and theatre Carré. You can choose dishes from their rather special menu in the modernly lit, classical dining room, which is in the mezzanine. Downstairs there is a good bar and an open-plan kitchen. The dishes on offer are not cheap, but you get what you pay for. For an appetizer, try its wonderful fish-soup with cheese and croutons. Main courses are varied and a three-course set menu is also offered. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Not a Pizza in Sight |
2e Egelantiersdwarsstraat 9 Amsterdam 1015 SB Netherlands +31 (0)20 626 0028 |
Hostaria, situated in the Jordaan, is a taste of the real Italy. It certainly isn't your typical tourist-trap pizzeria. The decor is, predictably, authentically Italian: images of La Loren, Ferrari and the Pope merge together, with a singing cook in the background. The cooks are inventive yet the cuisine is based on original Italian family recipes. The pastas are always fresh (made the same day) and the soups and salads are tasty. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Honest Cuisine |
10 H Aambeeldstraat Amsterdam 1021 KB Netherlands +31 20 636 5170 http://www.hoteldegoudfazant.nl/ |
It may sound like a hotel, but isn't one. The Hotel de Goudfazant is a spacious no frills restaurant set in an old industrial space. An enormous chandelier will catch your attention as soon as you enter the restaurant. Go ahead, and just as you are making yourself comfortable, the cheerful and ever helpful staff will take your order. They'll also advise you on the wines that would taste best with your choice of food from the 'honest cuisine'. Roasted chicken is highly recommended by the regulars to this place. Also try the oyster ceviche, another favorite with most of the elite guests this place has earned. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Utrechtsestraat 137 Amsterdam 1017 VM Netherlands +31 (0)20 627 0575 http://www.huyschkaemer.nl/ info@huyschkaemer.nl |
The first thing that strikes you as you walk into this restaurant is its unique decor. The blue-and-orange interior is vamped up with ladders, huge windows and metal accessories that create a post-industrial effect. Locals, tourists, gays and the generally arty clan can be seen enjoying meals and drinks in the laid-back ambiance. The place has a neat bar counter, where you can catch up on the latest news over a drink. Since it is located on the Utrechtsestraat—a street full of stores and eateries—De Huyschkaemer is constantly abuzz with people moving in and out. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A cultural pub dedicated to 'serious' modern music |
Weesperzijde 23 Amsterdam 1091 EC Netherlands +31 (0)20 668 1805 http://www.netcetera.nl/ysbreker/ post@ysbreker.nl |
The clientele of the Icebreaker have a serious air whether they're having a cup of coffee, a small beer, a glass of wine or enjoying one of the many small tasty dishes. They're not real tipplers, not one single unseemly word is ever heard, but very few of them come for the beautiful music that is played in the hall in the back nearly every night. The terrace on the street has a little sun at times, and over the street next to the Amstel you can sit beneath large tall trees. They sell Amstel on tap and 15 mainly Belgian beers in bottles. Spanish restaurant near Artis Zoo |
Kadijksplein 16 Amsterdam 1018 AC Netherlands +31 (0)20 623 6313 |
Opposite the Scheepvaartmuseum and new Metropolis is the Kadijksplein, one of the oldest parts of Amsterdam. On this square stands Iberia, a unique restaurant serving delicious Spanish and Portuguese cuisine. Specialities include fish, meat and rice dishes. The restaurant spans different levels and a number of dining rooms. Iberia has a lovely cellar with the famous Sherry Bodega as a feature. The walls of the restaurant are covered with plates and pictures of a whole host of Spanish artists. On one of the plates it says Lo mejor de esta casa son los clients, meaning The best thing about this house is its clients. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Brazilian/Argentinian restaurant serving great meat |
Prinsengracht 703 Amsterdam 1017 JV Netherlands +31 (0)20 420 3910 |
This Brazilian/Argentinean steakhouse is definitely one for the carnivores among us. Iguazu offers a fine selection of traditional Brazilian and Argentinian dishes. A variety of fish dishes are available as well, along with a few respectable salads, but this is a typical South American restaurant: meat is definitely the specialty. Iguazu has a special tourist menu as well as surprise menus that are updated regularly-but don't take these as indicators of a lower-class restaurant. It's actually quite cozy and the meat is top-of-the-range. Sometimes you can even enjoy some live Latin music. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The name befits the location: a trip to "In de Waag" will find you within the walls of the city's oldest building, at the bustling city center. Built in 1488, the structure's design and décor takes one back to its glory days. Careful preservation and embellishment with candles and mood lighting give the interiors a warm, romantic and classy ambiance. Review © 2007, Wcities |
