Surinamese/Chinese restaurant and shop |
Albert Cuypstraat 69 Amsterdam 1072 CN Netherlands +31 (0)20 675 5135 |
In the heart of De Pijp, on Ceintuurbaan, you'll find the Chinese-Surinamese restaurant Albina. This is the friendliest, most delicious roti shop in Amsterdam and offers excellent quality for the prices. This is a very popular spot amongst locals. The restaurant reminds one of a snack bar, but the Surinam food makes Albina well worth a visit. Be sure to try the Black Pudding! Review © 2007, Wcities |

The homemade French fries are amazing. Wrap up with one of Altmann's delicious sorbet ice-creams. The look is chic and quintessentially European, replete with subtly whitewashed walls, dark wood seating and candle lit tables. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Run by a young couple, An specializes in authentic Japanese cuisine. The open kitchen provides guests a peep into the chef's quick cooking styles. The ambiance puts you at ease instantly as you mull over the menu. The place doesn't have a liquor license, so bring your own along. The fare is well-priced with decent portions. A take away counter is at hand for those who are on the move. Give An a try, when in Grachtengordel. There's a fat chance you'll enjoy yourself. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Very Italian |
Hemonystraat 18 Amsterdam 1074 BP Netherlands +31 (0)20 676 4182 |
Nestled in the happening Pijp area of the city, this Italian eatery is a haven for pastas and pizzas. Bruschettas, carpaccio, Toscan Beef, and other Italian preparations feature on the menu. Portions tend to be small for the prices but the food quells all disappointment. The wines and beer keep spirits high, though, the rude staff can ruin your day. The place gets crowded in the evenings, so be prepared to wait for a table as reservations are not accepted. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Steak Paradise |
Leidekruisstraat 7 Amsterdam, NH 1017 RE Netherlands +31 20 622 3375 http://www.losargentinos.nl info@losargentinos.nl |
The Dutch have always had a thing for Argentinean cuisine and Los Argentinos is a commendable addition to that. Saying that the steaks here are good is stating the obvious. Apart from steaks there are lip-smacking cutlets, fries, meat and veggies in sour cream, garlic and tomato based sauces. The sea-food lovers can have a field day as well, what with lobsters, shrimps, salmon all dolled up to perfection. The cold salads are perfectly sour and creamy with lots of dressing thrown in good measure. The ambiance is warm, cozy and comforting with touches of South American architecture(the famed brick walls) and furnishings. You can enjoy your steaks with live music here on weekends. It can't get better than this, can it? Review © 2007, Wcities |

When you set foot in De Bakkerswinkel you feel like you are entering an old French bakery. The warm smell of baguettes, petit pains au chocolat and big round provençal bread, prepared with olives, garlic, thyme and sun-dried tomatoes tempts even the most strong-willed. De Bakkerswinkel uses traditional French recipes for its goods and there's plenty of space for hungry customers to take a seat. You can fill your stomach with a sandwich, quiche, salad or soup, and enjoy a cup of tea. In the summertime, the little terrace opens up for outside use. Typical Dutch cuisine |
Leidsekruisstraat 28 Amsterdam 1017 RJ Netherlands +31 (0)20 627 0521 |
This small, cozy restaurant provides a nice change and a chance to sample traditional Dutch cuisine. It is popular among locals (especially the student fraternity) for its good prices, delicious food and casual atmosphere. "Typical Dutch cuisine" may sound a little confusing: imagine vegetables mixed together with other vegetables to make... mashed up vegetables. It may not sound very appetizing, but you'll never know unless you try. This is a great place for everyone, but can prove especially enjoyable for tourists: meals take place at communal tables, which provides an opportunity to meet some very interesting people. This brasserie is located near the cultural centre of Amsterdam. The focus here is definitely on fish and seafood. Bark stands out from other nearby restaurants because it is open late until midnight. The interior was recently redesigned and now has an open kitchen, where guests are welcome to have a look around. Much of the clientele here are concert-goers from Museum Square. Being situated in a very important cultural part of Amsterdam, many of Bark's customers are visitors to the multitude of museums in the surrounding area. This is a lively restaurant, which combines a culinary experience with a dynamic atmosphere. It is also one of a group of restaurants known for their excellent customer service. This bar, situated in an old bank building, is still slightly off the beaten track. But it is quite trendy and offers a different sort of experience from the average bar. The interior is furnished using a variety of homey accessories: a reading table, a small inner garden, loads of different places to sit and varied styles of chairs and tables, all done up in a very Mediterranean style. There's wi-fi internet available. Lots of color creates a warm atmosphere. Live music on Sunday afternoons makes this an even more tempting place to while the day away. Calling it a cafe really doesn't do justice to Cafe American—this is not only the oldest Grand Cafe in the Netherlands, but both the building and its interior are listed monuments and it's easy to see why. The interior is impressive, to say the least, with beautiful stained glass windows, huge murals and quite stunning chandeliers. An antique reading table is also present, well-stocked with the latest newspapers and magazines. In true American style, the cafe has a separate non-smoking area, and to top it off, there is a large terrace that gives a good view of the Leidseplein. This place is definitely one to visit. China Grand is one of the better average-priced Chinese restaurants in Amsterdam, and is located on one of the city's main roads that lead to the centre. Its specialities are Szechuan and Cantonese cuisine. Any of these dishes is highly recommended and are made with beef, pork, lamb, chicken, seafood or vegetables. The various dishes with Szechuan sauce, a sweet and spicy sauce with vegetables, are tangy and tasty. Apart from the original Szechuan and Cantonese cuisine, China Grand also offers many other Chinese dishes, which are mostly a little bit cheaper than the ones mentioned before, as well as a lot of different Chinese rice-tables. This respected restaurant (ranked in the Dutch top 50) is to be found on the 23rd floor of the Okura Hotel, located in the immediate vicinity of Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Concertgebouw. From this floor, you will have an unbelievable view over the city of Amsterdam and its surrounding area. Pretty Tasty |
Ferdinand Bolstraat 10 Amsterdam 1072 LJ Netherlands +31 20 7764600 http://www.detaart.com/ |
This place is famous for incredible-looking cakes that taste heavenly. With two highly creative men behind the concept, some cakes look like they belong in a museum. And they do! Several museums in the Netherlands have exhibited these pastry-wonders that seem to come straight from the Madhatter's Tea Party. You can visit the beautiful patisserie in trendy neighborhood De Pijp and enjoy one of the numerous tastees. The interior suits the servings: everything is colorful, kitsch, retro and there is lots and lots of pink. This place is sweet and a must-visit for anyone who would like to enjoy a sugar-high in Amsterdam. -Sandy Hayes Review © 2007, Wcities |

District V (five) is a very classy restaurant located in the heart of one of Amsterdam's most famous districts, 'De Pijp'. If you are going to have dinner here you should be warned that two things are a bit unusual. First of all they don't have a regular menu. Specialties of the day are written on a small blackboard and then dictated by your server. The menu usually includes a choice of three starters, three main courses and four desserts. Although your choices are somewhat limited, there is something here for just about everyone. The restaurant's second unusual characteristic is that everything here is for sale—the lights, the silverware, the table—in short, you can take this place home with you. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Popular and affordable Thai |
Rijnstraat 87 Amsterdam 1079 GZ Netherlands +31 (0)20 661 2578 |
This Thai restaurant is very busy just about all the time. A lot of people choose to call for take away instead of waiting for a table. It is busy for a reason: the food is top quality and prices are very friendly. The clientèle is diverse, although students do seem to be the most regular visitors. It is not the best-looking restaurant in Amsterdam, but who cares? Pay this place a visit if you love Thai food and don't mind a wait. The ingredients are fresh and you'll have somewhere around 90 different dishes to choose from. No alcohol or desserts are served. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Japanese Grillhouse |
Scheldestraat 1 Amsterdam 1078 GD Netherlands +31 (0)20 679 0439 http://www.kushitei.nl/ |
Situated next to the Okura hotel, this Japanese bar and grillhouse serves the famous Yakitori dishes in a very Japanese manner. The food is skewered on small sticks and grilled. For convenience, the management has created two different set menus, which allow diners to sit back and taste a wide selection of dishes. Both set menus consist of 10 sticks. However, the option still remains to order à la carte. Guests must order a minimum of five sticks. Examples of dishes are: asparagus wrapped in bacon and grilled fillet steak. The proprietors have also started a sushi takeaway next to the restaurant in which, besides sushi, they sell Japanese snacks as well as original Japanese dinner-sets. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This restaurant, located in a magnificent old warehouse by one of Amsterdam's canals, serves regional French fare made using original French ingredients. The stairs bring you into a French inn, which is lit by candlelight and has thick beams attached to the ceiling. The selected wines are written on blackboards and vary in price. Wine is also available by the glass or carafe. The food is tasty, but there is not a lot of choice. Prices are reasonable. A daily set menu and a vegetarian set menu costs is available. This restaurant, specialising in traditional Spanish tapas, is a delightful addition to the Amsterdam scene and very popular amongst locals. The tiled walls and wooden interior create an authentically Spanish atmosphere. Tapas are excellent and surprisingly affordable. Iberian ham is not to be missed—it's probably the best in town. This place is always bustling, which may not make it an ideal place for an intimate dinner. If you're in the mood for a lively night out, this is the place to go. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Home made Italian ice creams |
Scheldeplein t/o no. 10 Amsterdam, NH 1078 GR Netherlands +31 20 671 5577 http://www.pisa-ijs.com info@pisa-ijs.com |
Standing in the corner of a street, this tiny shop like structure can be deceptive; Pisa Ijs is the storehouse of the most sinful frozen desserts you can lay your hands on in the city. There are over thirty varieties of fresh, Italian home-made ice creams and the menu is regularly updated to accommodate the season's favorite. Even the fact that there's no seating available doesn't deter people from coming here by the hordes. To pick from the assortment of flavors available, you can even sample them. By the time you've tasted them all, there's no room left for anymore. The strawberry, chocolate and dry fruit varieties are worth slurping. And so are the cappuccino and raspberry. Cones or cups, the choice is yours. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Well worth trying is the Mustard Soup. The most expensive starters are fish or meat dishes. Eleven main dishes are shown on the menu, all served with vegetables, salad and potatoes. Try the Poached Scottish Salmon with Chives. If there's nothing on the menu that tickles your fancy, have a look at the blackboard to see which daily specials are featured. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Renzo's is a Mediterranean culinary temple - the place to be if you're looking for tasty Italian, Greek and Spanish foods such as fresh pasta, pies, salad, bread, tapas, risotto, tiramisu, cheeses and meats. This establishment also trades as a food wholesaler, retailer, and preparation center and runs its own restaurant across the way. Although some might even argue that it's a restaurant with an adjacent shop! The warm Italian cooking aromas which pervade attract many a passer-by. The home-made pasta is delicious and their pies and quiches are created from Greek, Spanish and Italian grandmothers' recipes. The filling chocolate cake is definitely something not to be missed! In short, real food, real taste and fresh ingredients form the basis of their philosophy. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Just around the corner from the old Heineken brewery and very close to the Albert Cuyp market (the largest in Amsterdam), De Ondeugd can be found. Its name means naughtiness, but actually there is nothing naughty about it. It is simply an excellent restaurant with high quality food and service. No wonder it's always busy here! However, the meals are not cheap. You will get good quality for your money, though. If you don't feel like meat or fish, try a large salad. Good house wines are on the menu, but it also offers other high quality wines, as is clear from a study of the wine list. As this restaurant is very popular, reservations are recommended.
