Tasty Tandoori |
Korte Leidsedwarsstraat 15 Amsterdam, NH 1017 Netherlands +31 20 624 2211 http://www.akbar.nl/ |
Located in the Leidseplein, this popular restaurant features a range of Indian cuisine, from classic favorites to innovative treats. Unlike many of the other Indian restaurants in the area, Akbar picks quality over speed, so be prepared to sit down for a full meal. Start off with some samosas or prawns, then pick from one of the set dinners or sample smaller plates for more variety. If you are looking for vegetarian options, you'll find the most choices with a few side dishes instead of a full entree. For dessert, you can top it all off with creamy pudding or ice cream. The restaurant also has a full selection of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Steak Paradise |
Leidekruisstraat 7 Amsterdam, NH 1017 RE Netherlands +31 20 622 3375 http://www.losargentinos.nl info@losargentinos.nl |
The Dutch have always had a thing for Argentinean cuisine and Los Argentinos is a commendable addition to that. Saying that the steaks here are good is stating the obvious. Apart from steaks there are lip-smacking cutlets, fries, meat and veggies in sour cream, garlic and tomato based sauces. The sea-food lovers can have a field day as well, what with lobsters, shrimps, salmon all dolled up to perfection. The cold salads are perfectly sour and creamy with lots of dressing thrown in good measure. The ambiance is warm, cozy and comforting with touches of South American architecture(the famed brick walls) and furnishings. You can enjoy your steaks with live music here on weekends. It can't get better than this, can it? Review © 2007, Wcities |

Typical Dutch cuisine |
Leidsekruisstraat 28 Amsterdam 1017 RJ Netherlands +31 (0)20 627 0521 |
This small, cozy restaurant provides a nice change and a chance to sample traditional Dutch cuisine. It is popular among locals (especially the student fraternity) for its good prices, delicious food and casual atmosphere. "Typical Dutch cuisine" may sound a little confusing: imagine vegetables mixed together with other vegetables to make... mashed up vegetables. It may not sound very appetizing, but you'll never know unless you try. This is a great place for everyone, but can prove especially enjoyable for tourists: meals take place at communal tables, which provides an opportunity to meet some very interesting people. If hunger strikes you after some night-time fun in Amsterdam, head down to Bojo. This Indonesian restaurant is known for its late open hours, quick service, and best of all, its affordable prices. Bamboo-covered walls and warm tones make this informal eatery comfortable and welcoming. Unwind as you dig into wholesome Indonesian fare like the Nasi Koening (rice cooked in coconut sauce, mixed with baked chicken, stewed meats, shrimp or vegetables). Although there is no alcohol served in here, you can sip on a variety of juices, teas or shakes. The best way to drive out the late night munchies! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Sleek, comfortable dinner-cinema |
Marnixstraat 429 Amsterdam 1017 PK Netherlands +31 (0)20 0620 7222 http://www.cafecox.nl/ |
Located in a nice area, this theater-café draws people looking for a conversational night out as well as an intimate dinner for two. Tall ceilings create an open airy atmosphere whether you are sitting on the lower level, or the small upper seating area. The rustic French décor and brass iron railings create a sleek, simple style, which works well with the faint yellow walls. Whether you are coming for a few cocktails or a full meal, the bustling atmosphere will draw you in. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Old Dutch grand café |
Leidsekade 97 Amsterdam 1017 PN Netherlands +31 (0)20 556 3009 http://www.amsterdamamerican.c... info@AmsterdamAmerican.com |
Calling it a cafe really doesn't do justice to Cafe American—this is not only the oldest Grand Cafe in the Netherlands, but both the building and its interior are listed monuments and it's easy to see why. The interior is impressive, to say the least, with beautiful stained glass windows, huge murals and quite stunning chandeliers. An antique reading table is also present, well-stocked with the latest newspapers and magazines. In true American style, the cafe has a separate non-smoking area, and to top it off, there is a large terrace that gives a good view of the Leidseplein. This place is definitely one to visit. Cozy Terrace Bar With Good Music |
Leidseplein 14 Amsterdam, NH 1017 PT Netherlands +31 20 623 8361 http://www.cafedewaard.nl/?l=eng |
No its not a Gaulish tavern you would find in an Asterix comic, yet you find the mascot bearing an uncanny resemblance to the comic superhero and there are comic strips all over the place. Coming to the food, it's a good mix of European and American fare with all the flavors intact and serves the best nocturnal meal money can buy. A popular hangout with the night birds, the bar is always buzzing with energy, loads of action and music. Adjacent to the bar is an open terrace where you can wine and dine in the evening breeze. The central location of De Waard makes it the obvious choice for many locals and tourists alike. When hunger strikes at unearthly hours, De Waard's doors are open for you. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Peruvian Food |
Leidsegracht 68 Amsterdam 1016 CP Netherlands +31 (0)20 620 3749 http://www.casaperu.nl |
Restaurant Casa Perú is the first and, so far, only Peruvian restaurant in the Netherlands. It's established in a monumental building in the heart of Amsterdam, in which guests are treated to South American hospitality in a cosy, informal atmosphere. In Casa Perú, an extensive menu (with 76 dishes!) provides an overview of the variety of Peruvian cuisine—warm and cold dishes (such as the famous fish dish Ceviche De Pescado, home-made stews with beef and goat, stewed and baked seafood, some vegetarian dishes, chicken and fish and typical Peruvian cocktails (such as Pico Sour andChuchuhuasi). The merging of culinary styles between Mexican and American food enables the customer to enjoy chicken enchiladas and rib-eye steaks in the same sitting. This restaurant is popular with families, business types, and students alike. Check out Chicano's website for its second Amsterdam location. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Belgian Beer with Dutch Atmosphere |
Raamstraat 29 Amsterdam, NH 1016 XL Netherlands +31 20 626 8694 http://www.de-flux.org/dezotte/ |
This place is just off the main tourist area, and all the better for it. For those who manage to find it, there are literally hundreds of different beers to choose from. To help give all that draught a bit of soft landing, they also serve food which is simple, tasty, and (fairly)cheap. The numerous sorts of Belgian beer, bottled or on tap, make it hard to choose, and will keep you on (or falling off) your seat till closing-time. This pub is low-key and very nice for a night of a little beer-experimenting in a friendly atmosphere. -Sandy Hayes Review © 2007, Wcities |

This eatery, located in the Jordaan area, serves contemporary food. Choose among the wide variety of dishes, including the salads, szechuan beef, baked eggplant, pastas, and potato wedges. The place, run by Mary Jo, an American expat, is quite popular, both among locals and tourists. If you're lucky, you might catch a celebrity eating here. Review © 2007, Wcities |

As the name predicts |
Kleine Gartmanplantsoen 39085 Amsterdam 1017 RR Netherlands +31 (0)20 623 0700 |
Located on Leidesplein, this Grand Café is everything you would expect from a Grand Café: it's big, it's beautiful, it's expensive and people come here to be seen, especially on weekends. This restaurant may not be everybody's cup of tea, but you'll probably want to have a look around anyway. Depending on the type of person you are, you'll either flee, running for the hills (not easy in Holland!) or blend in with the crowd and refuse to go anywhere else for the rest of the day. The terrace is a nice place to spend a sunny afternoon and there are plenty of sheltered spots inside where you can hang out and enjoy a bit of privacy. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Brazilian/Argentinian restaurant serving great meat |
Prinsengracht 703 Amsterdam 1017 JV Netherlands +31 (0)20 420 3910 |
This Brazilian/Argentinean steakhouse is definitely one for the carnivores among us. Iguazu offers a fine selection of traditional Brazilian and Argentinian dishes. A variety of fish dishes are available as well, along with a few respectable salads, but this is a typical South American restaurant: meat is definitely the specialty. Iguazu has a special tourist menu as well as surprise menus that are updated regularly-but don't take these as indicators of a lower-class restaurant. It's actually quite cozy and the meat is top-of-the-range. Sometimes you can even enjoy some live Latin music. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Lounge of the Trendy |

This hip bar/pub is a popular spot for the trendy youth of the city, and it shows! As the evening progresses and tables become scarce and dining service can crawl. But with posh yet funky decor (including bright red walls and comfortable sofas) and loud music, Kamer 401 has established itself among the other modern lounges in the Leidseplein area. Stop by after a show or before heading out to the clubs-- and if hunger strikes, you can grab some Italian fare with your martini. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Established decades ago, Kelderhof is a restaurant that offers its guests a pleasant atmosphere with a Mediterranean touch. Authentic Indonesian |
1st Floor, Lange Leidsedwarsstraat 37-41 Amsterdam 1017 NG Netherlands +31 (0)20 627 7627 http://www.purimas.nl purimas@purimas.nl |
Puri Mas stands for Golden Temple and the restaurant tries to uphold this idea in terms of service and hospitality. Its central location, near the Leidseplein, makes it popular with tourists. This is a comfortable restaurant, designed in a U-shape around a staircase. Its modern interior is tastefully decorated with original Indonesian handcrafts and paintings. The staff dress in typically Batik costumes, and Indonesian music completes the atmosphere. All this, combined with the friendly service, adds to a congenial ambience. The restaurant is famous for its Rijsttafel—a feast of mild to strongly spiced Indonesian dishes. Rijsttafel means Rice Table—an array of many dishes in small portions that cover the whole table. Although it is a Dutch idea, its origins are clearly Indonesian and it was known at one time as Makan Besar. Review © 2007, Wcities |

In the heart of Amsterdam, you can easily find authentic South American cuisine at the Rancho Argentinian Grill. Tibetan and Nepalese dishes |
Korte Leidsedwarsstraat 58 Amsterdam 1017 RD Netherlands +31 (0)20 623 9495 |
The Nepalese-Tibetan restaurant Sherpa is one of a kind in the Netherlands. You'll find it in the heart of Amsterdam, just a stone's throw from Leidseplein. The preparation of traditional cuisine is an exclusive art in Tibet and Nepal, which is now being practised in Amsterdam. Dishes from Nepal are prepared with delicate spices, while the Tibetan dishes are made from ravioli and noodles. The homemade ravioli can be divided into two sorts: Momos (steamed) and Kothay (baked). You'll also find a variety of vegetarian options in Sherpa. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A bit hidden behind the Americain Hotel, De Smoeshaan (The Talkative Cock) is a typical hangout for actors and actresses of stage, film and television when they are next door at the small Bellevue Theater. The interior is rather 'brown' and the furniture is old and comfortable. Next to the pub, where a variety of small snacks is served, there is a full-fledged restaurant upstairs with a reasonably priced menu with some good a la carte dishes. Amstel is offered on draught, and many brands of bottled beers are served. Review © 2007, Wcities |
