Bakkerswinkel

Lovely little bakery
Roelof Hartstraat 68
Amsterdam 1071 VM
Netherlands
+31 (0)20 662 3594
http://www.debakkerswinkel.nl
When you set foot in De Bakkerswinkel you feel like you are entering an old French bakery. The warm smell of baguettes, petit pains au chocolat and big round provençal bread, prepared with olives, garlic, thyme and sun-dried tomatoes tempts even the most strong-willed. De Bakkerswinkel uses traditional French recipes for its goods and there's plenty of space for hungry customers to take a seat. You can fill your stomach with a sandwich, quiche, salad or soup, and enjoy a cup of tea. In the summertime, the little terrace opens up for outside use. You can rent De Bakkerswinkel for a special event, private dinner or to take high tea with some friends.

Cafe 't Smalle

This charming cafe in the De Jordaan district offers a wide range of drinks and food in a comfortable setting. The interior is dark and roomy (by Amsterdam's standards), with several tables and bar stools arranged on a checkered floor. There is also space on a floating platform outside that is ideal during nice weather. In addition to the wide selection of beers, wines, coffees, and teas, the cafe has a full menu of snacks. You can choose from soups, salads, sandwiches, or tapas-style plates to go with your drink.

Cafe Belgique

Belgium is home to an amazing beer culture, so it is little wonder that you can sample its brews all over Amsterdam. At Cafe Belgique, you can find a range of both bottled and draught beers that offer a taste of the many styles available. The cafe itself is very small, giving patrons many reasons to chat with each other and with the staff. Take some time to experiment with the selection of drinks available, as you may end up finding a new favorite.

Cafe De Doelen

Charming Pub
Kloveniersburgwal 125
Amsterdam, NH 1011
Netherlands
+31 20 624 9023
This charming pub and cafe offers a little more room than many of its fellow establishments, though in Amsterdam that doesn't guarantee more than a few tables inside. The menu of beers offers some of the classic favorites, while still saving room for a few harder-to-find choices. When pleasant weather beckons, there are tables and chairs outside the front door, providing a nice view over the nearby canal.

This joint has a reputation with the college crowd as a cool hangout. The decor comprises stained glass windows, wooden furniture and posters of upcoming cultural events. The vegetarian dishes, pies and the fries are popular, but regulars are obviously more drawn to the tea, beer and whisky. People come here to play cards, chess and pinball. Card competitions are also held here. The music played ranges from jazz and pop to metal.

Festina Lente

Grab a Mouth-full
Looiersgracht 40b
Amsterdam, NH 1016 VS
Netherlands
+34 20 638 1412
http://www.cafefestinalente.nl/
Festina Lente is a comfy hang-out when it's the middle of the day and your hunger demands something more than a breakfast but less than lunch. Lentini means tapas but the menu here serves food portions which more than satisfy one's appetite. One can have meat/fish, pasta, rice and combine them with one of the appetizers. Try the salads, soups or the potato dishes for a mixed variety of Spanish, Greek and traditional flavors. Save room for the lip-smacking desserts; the apple pie and brownies are a treat for the taste-buds. And if you ever have trouble deciding your meal look in the Rococo mirror and order the specials!

Hill Street Blues

High on the Hill
Warmoesstraat 52
Amsterdam 1012 JG
Netherlands
http://www.hill-street-blues.nl/
This coffee shop and bar is called Hill Street Blues, after the well-known TV series, and is located next door to a police station. The place is decorated with graffiti not only on the walls but also on the sofas and chairs. They serve coffee and a wide range of spirits, beer and liqueurs. You can also chill out while playing some pool, foosball, backgammon, chess or arcade games. Inquire at the "dealers" corner about the range of items on their Smokers Menu. Eminem had his photo taken on the Hill Street couch for the cover of his first album, so you may even bump in to someone famous here.

IJsbreker

A cultural pub dedicated to 'serious' modern music
Weesperzijde 23
Amsterdam 1091 EC
Netherlands
+31 (0)20 668 1805
http://www.netcetera.nl/ysbreker/
The clientele of the Icebreaker have a serious air whether they're having a cup of coffee, a small beer, a glass of wine or enjoying one of the many small tasty dishes. They're not real tipplers, not one single unseemly word is ever heard, but very few of them come for the beautiful music that is played in the hall in the back nearly every night. The terrace on the street has a little sun at times, and over the street next to the Amstel you can sit beneath large tall trees. They sell Amstel on tap and 15 mainly Belgian beers in bottles.

Meneer Pannekoek Café

Pancake palace
Raadhuisstraat 6
Amsterdam, NH 1012 TJ
Netherlands
+31 20 627 8500
The Dutch pannekoek is a more exotic variety of a pancake; more thinner and larger, and definitely more tastier. One of the best places in Amsterdam to savor it is Meneer Pannekoek Café. This Pannekoekenhuis (pancake house) is located conveniently behind the dam and thus is almost always packed. Cosy interiors with Hollywood actors in black and white watch over your table, as the leisurely-moving waiters serve hot and fresh pannekoeks. Some of their specials include the delicious smoked salmon and mixed nuts coconut amaretto whipped cream treat. They also serve sandwiches, quiche, soups, omelets, salads and even steak, beef sirloin, hamburger, chicken pasta, hotchpotch or grilled salmon. The cafe is also one of the rare Dutch restaurants to have a non-smoking area.

Pampa

Traditional South American fare
Paleisstraat 21
Amsterdam, NH 1012 RB
Netherlands
+31 20 620 0153
It is not very difficult to spot La Pampa on Dam Square; the eatery with hordes of people waiting expectantly for their steaks is your destination. Blending authentic ingredients and charcoal-grill cooking, the restaurant brings the best of South American cuisine to Amsterdam. The barbecued ribs and steaks are chunky, well-cooked and juicy; they all come with salad and chips as side dishes. For the sea-food lovers, there's a whole assortment of fresh and delectable fish preparations. The prices are modest and the portions, generous. The decor is minimalist but comfortable nevertheless. Go on this South American culinary sojourn and you shall not regret it.

Passage

Go Dutch!
Nieuwendijk 224
Amsterdam, NH 1012 MX
Netherlands
+31 20 624 8439
http://www.de-passage.com
In Amsterdam you have few restaurants that serve cheap and good Dutch food, and De Passage scores on both. Reasonably priced, this eatery offers huge servings of truly authentic preparations. Try the juicy Spare Ribs or the yummy Grilled Salmon with lemon butter. The pastas, salads and fries are also worth relishing. Warm French bread acts as a perfect accompaniment for the main course and Tiramisu is ideal for dessert. The martinis and wines will help in combating the excessive spice and grease. It's a little cramped and stuffy in here but the food more than makes up for it.

Pleinzicht

Old Pub Made New
Kadijksplein 10
Amsterdam, NH 1018 AC
Netherlands
+31 20 622 4034
During renovations of the old houses on this square, owner Nelis also decided to change the interiors of this old billiards house and added a new pool table. It took some time before the regulars could feel at ease again at this place. Though much effort were made to maintain the shabby look of Pleinzicht, the place nevertheless looks bright and clean now. But apart from that, nothing has changed. The well drawn beer is still available at a reasonable price, as well as the Heineken on drought and the usual snacks.

Amsterdam's only traditional cake parlor, this place might look like a coffee shop from the outside, but inside the true colors shine through. The tables are cloaked not with tablecloths but with rugs, an old Dutch tradition; this is one detail that makes absolutely anyone feel right at home in this cake shop. From the sweet-smelling and gorgeously decorated cakes to the strong coffee and tea, this place is a delight to all of the senses. Vilage Bagels

Bagles and More
137 Vijzelstraat
Corner Prinsegracht
Amsterdam, North Holland 1017HJ
Netherlands
+31 20 427 2213
http://www.villagebagels.nl/
Village Bagels is a cafe, snack bar and store all rolled into one. It might not be that spacious but that doesn't deter people from walking in constantly to grab a quick meal or take-away, before they are off to work. The bustling hang-out might be minimalistically decorated but it has its regulars for the wide menu of coffee, sandwiches, snacks and of course bagels! Crisp, fresh and mouth-watering bagels is what this place is famous for. A good long wait in a queue can be expected during lunch hours.
