Trendy fusion food
Prinsenstraat 10
Amsterdam 1015 DC
Netherlands
+31 (0)20 428 2455
This popular fusion restaurant is a relatively new addition to Amsterdam's eateries, having opened in 1998. Just to prove its commitment to the fusion principle, even the interior is a mishmash of new and old, blended together nicely to create a memorable dining experience. The menu combines Eastern and Western influences to good effect and this restaurant is billed as Demi-veg, which indicates a concentration on fish and vegetarian dishes. Add to this a nice wine list, and the final result is a restaurant well worth visiting. Fusion isn't for everybody, but you'll never know unless you try it.

Akbar Indian Restaurant

Tasty Tandoori
Korte Leidsedwarsstraat 15
Amsterdam, NH 1017
Netherlands
+31 20 624 2211
http://www.akbar.nl/
Located in the Leidseplein, this popular restaurant features a range of Indian cuisine, from classic favorites to innovative treats. Unlike many of the other Indian restaurants in the area, Akbar picks quality over speed, so be prepared to sit down for a full meal. Start off with some samosas or prawns, then pick from one of the set dinners or sample smaller plates for more variety. If you are looking for vegetarian options, you'll find the most choices with a few side dishes instead of a full entree. For dessert, you can top it all off with creamy pudding or ice cream. The restaurant also has a full selection of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

In the heart of De Pijp, on Ceintuurbaan, you'll find the Chinese-Surinamese restaurant Albina. This is the friendliest, most delicious roti shop in Amsterdam and offers excellent quality for the prices. This is a very popular spot amongst locals. The restaurant reminds one of a snack bar, but the Surinam food makes Albina well worth a visit. Be sure to try the Black Pudding!

Very Italian
Hemonystraat 18
Amsterdam 1074 BP
Netherlands
+31 (0)20 676 4182
Nestled in the happening Pijp area of the city, this Italian eatery is a haven for pastas and pizzas. Bruschettas, carpaccio, Toscan Beef, and other Italian preparations feature on the menu. Portions tend to be small for the prices but the food quells all disappointment. The wines and beer keep spirits high, though, the rude staff can ruin your day. The place gets crowded in the evenings, so be prepared to wait for a table as reservations are not accepted.

The Dutch have always had a thing for Argentinean cuisine and Los Argentinos is a commendable addition to that. Saying that the steaks here are good is stating the obvious. Apart from steaks there are lip-smacking cutlets, fries, meat and veggies in sour cream, garlic and tomato based sauces. The sea-food lovers can have a field day as well, what with lobsters, shrimps, salmon all dolled up to perfection. The cold salads are perfectly sour and creamy with lots of dressing thrown in good measure. The ambiance is warm, cozy and comforting with touches of South American architecture(the famed brick walls) and furnishings. You can enjoy your steaks with live music here on weekends. It can't get better than this, can it?

This small, cozy restaurant provides a nice change and a chance to sample traditional Dutch cuisine. It is popular among locals (especially the student fraternity) for its good prices, delicious food and casual atmosphere. "Typical Dutch cuisine" may sound a little confusing: imagine vegetables mixed together with other vegetables to make... mashed up vegetables. It may not sound very appetizing, but you'll never know unless you try. This is a great place for everyone, but can prove especially enjoyable for tourists: meals take place at communal tables, which provides an opportunity to meet some very interesting people.

Calling it a cafe really doesn't do justice to Cafe American—this is not only the oldest Grand Cafe in the Netherlands, but both the building and its interior are listed monuments and it's easy to see why. The interior is impressive, to say the least, with beautiful stained glass windows, huge murals and quite stunning chandeliers. An antique reading table is also present, well-stocked with the latest newspapers and magazines. In true American style, the cafe has a separate non-smoking area, and to top it off, there is a large terrace that gives a good view of the Leidseplein. This place is definitely one to visit.

This joint has a reputation with the college crowd as a cool hangout. The decor comprises stained glass windows, wooden furniture and posters of upcoming cultural events. The vegetarian dishes, pies and the fries are popular, but regulars are obviously more drawn to the tea, beer and whisky. People come here to play cards, chess and pinball. Card competitions are also held here. The music played ranges from jazz and pop to metal.

A very old and queer place is the restaurant Eik en Linde. It's a typical Dutch 'brown' bar and its history dates back to 1858. It has photos and murals on the walls, which tell you various stories and take you back to the past. Food is quite nice and filling, and rest assured, it's easy on your pocket. The staff can be of help if you need them. When it's time to leave, try to look at your own watch as the clock behind can be very confusing, it runs backwards!

Coming to the food, it's a good mix of European and American fare with all the flavors intact and serves the best nocturnal meal money can buy. Centra is the place in which to sample authentic Spanish atmosphere, wine and tapas. The Formica tables, stacks of beer crates and fluorescent lighting all add to the authentic Spanish atmosphere. A showcase dominates part of the restaurant front, featuring a small bar with low barstools, serving tapas and drinks whilst guests wait for tables. Reservations are usually futile—it's always crowded here! Spanish waiters (or so they appear as they are clad in the traditional black-and-white) serve the delicious dishes in a somewhat hectic (but friendly) manner. The prices are not especially low, but the food on the other hand is worth it.

This is a cozy Thai restaurant on the Nieuwmarkt. This area of Amsterdam is littered with good little restaurants, most of them Chinese, so some Thai food comes as a nice change. Chao Phraya is quite popular, especially as a lunch restaurant. Rightfully so, as there is no greater joy than sitting in the sun on Niewmarkt scoffing down some fried rice with beef. Special mention has to go to the nice salads and the friendly service. The prices are also very reasonable.

If you are going to have dinner here you should be warned that two things are a bit unusual. First of all they don't have a regular menu. Specialties of the day are written on a small blackboard and then dictated by your server. The menu usually includes a choice of three starters, three main courses and four desserts. Although your choices are somewhat limited, there is something here for just about everyone. Hein

Best French Toast in Amsterdam!
Berenstraat 20
Amsterdam, NH 1016 GH
Netherlands
+31 206231048
Hein is a small and charming lunch cafe in Amsterdam's 9 Streets shopping area. Chef/owner Hein Jansen prepares everything herself in the small open kitchen, which customers must walk through to get to the seating area. There is a diverse set menu as well as daily specials. Thick Turkish yogurt with honey, crepes stuffed with chicken, quiche lorraine and fresh lentil salad are all worth trying, but the french toast is the real gem at this joint - pure homemade deliciousness! Hein is also open for private cooking lessons or dinner parties in the evenings, a minimum of 10 guests is required. -Shayne Gottdenker

'Heavenly Mud' is the literal translation of the name of this establishment, located near the Nieuwmarkt on one of Amsterdam's oldest canals. This is a modern restaurant with a bright and inviting interior. Of course, it is also pleasant (weather permitting) to enjoy your meal outside. The menu is very international—Dutch, French, Italian and Oriental cuisine are all represented (including a variety of vegetarian dishes). The atmosphere makes it a hassle-free place for a casual meal. Several prix fixe menus are available daily.

Het Schuim

Students and creative folk
Spuistraat 189
Amsterdam 1012 VN

This is quite a large bar, located near Dam Square. It is close to a part of the University and is frequented by students. Schuim translates as "foam", which is probably an indication of their most commonly served drink: beer. Het Schuim is a bit more than your usual student hangout. It gets quite a creative crowd, especially in the evening when the age of the clientèle rises. It looks the part, with that typical "thrown together" interior that seems to be the norm for every trendy bar at the moment. The pictures on the wall, which is used as an art gallery, are changed regularly. Het Schuim will serve about six draught beers and somewhere around 15 bottled beers at any given time. There is almost always one beer that is heavy enough to knock out a small elephant.

This coffee shop and bar is called Hill Street Blues, after the well-known TV series, and is located next door to a police station. The place is decorated with graffiti not only on the walls but also on the sofas and chairs. They serve coffee and a wide range of spirits, beer and liqueurs. You can also chill out while playing some pool, foosball, backgammon, chess or arcade games. Inquire at the "dealers" corner about the range of items on their Smokers Menu. Eminem had his photo taken on the Hill Street couch for the cover of his first album, so you may even bump in to someone famous here.

Le Hollandais serves regional French food and is located along the river Amstel, within walking distance from the Amstel Hotel and theatre Carré. You can choose dishes from their rather special menu in the modernly lit, classical dining room, which is in the mezzanine. Downstairs there is a good bar and an open-plan kitchen. The dishes on offer are not cheap, but you get what you pay for. For an appetizer, try its wonderful fish-soup with cheese and croutons. Main courses are varied and a three-course set menu is also offered.

Hostaria, situated in the Jordaan, is a taste of the real Italy. It certainly isn't your typical tourist-trap pizzeria. The decor is, predictably, authentically Italian: images of La Loren, Ferrari and the Pope merge together, with a singing cook in the background. The cooks are inventive yet the cuisine is based on original Italian family recipes. The pastas are always fresh (made the same day) and the soups and salads are tasty.

It may sound like a hotel, but isn't one. The Hotel de Goudfazant is a spacious no frills restaurant set in an old industrial space. An enormous chandelier will catch your attention as soon as you enter the restaurant. Go ahead, and just as you are making yourself comfortable, the cheerful and ever helpful staff will take your order. They'll also advise you on the wines that would taste best with your choice of food from the 'honest cuisine'. Roasted chicken is highly recommended by the regulars to this place. Also try the oyster ceviche, another favorite with most of the elite guests this place has earned.

The first thing that strikes you as you walk into this restaurant is its unique decor. The blue-and-orange interior is vamped up with ladders, huge windows and metal accessories that create a post-industrial effect. Locals, tourists, gays and the generally arty clan can be seen enjoying meals and drinks in the laid-back ambiance. The place has a neat bar counter, where you can catch up on the latest news over a drink. Since it is located on the Utrechtsestraat—a street full of stores and eateries—De Huyschkaemer is constantly abuzz with people moving in and out.

The clientele of the Icebreaker have a serious air whether they're having a cup of coffee, a small beer, a glass of wine or enjoying one of the many small tasty dishes. They're not real tipplers, not one single unseemly word is ever heard, but very few of them come for the beautiful music that is played in the hall in the back nearly every night. The terrace on the street has a little sun at times, and over the street next to the Amstel you can sit beneath large tall trees. They sell Amstel on tap and 15 mainly Belgian beers in bottles.

This Brazilian/Argentinean steakhouse is definitely one for the carnivores among us. Iguazu offers a fine selection of traditional Brazilian and Argentinian dishes. A variety of fish dishes are available as well, along with a few respectable salads, but this is a typical South American restaurant: meat is definitely the specialty. Iguazu has a special tourist menu as well as surprise menus that are updated regularly-but don't take these as indicators of a lower-class restaurant. It's actually quite cozy and the meat is top-of-the-range. Sometimes you can even enjoy some live Latin music.
