Trendy fusion food |
Prinsenstraat 10 Amsterdam 1015 DC Netherlands +31 (0)20 428 2455 |
This popular fusion restaurant is a relatively new addition to Amsterdam's eateries, having opened in 1998. Just to prove its commitment to the fusion principle, even the interior is a mishmash of new and old, blended together nicely to create a memorable dining experience. The menu combines Eastern and Western influences to good effect and this restaurant is billed as Demi-veg, which indicates a concentration on fish and vegetarian dishes. Add to this a nice wine list, and the final result is a restaurant well worth visiting. Fusion isn't for everybody, but you'll never know unless you try it. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Located on an Old City Center street, Altmann features a large dining arena and a cozy, comfortable bar separated by a colossal curtain. The cuisine is an eclectic mix of gourmet dishes from all around the globe and the bar boasts of a fine collection of innovative concoctions. There are a plethora of delicacies to pick from; dig into the duck breast with rice, grilled fillet and baked spinach or savor the sumptuous sea bass rolled in rice paper. The homemade French fries are amazing. Wrap up with one of Altmann's delicious sorbet ice-creams. The look is chic and quintessentially European, replete with subtly whitewashed walls, dark wood seating and candle lit tables. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Plantage Parklaan 10 Amsterdam 1018 ST Netherlands +31 (0)20 625 4721 http://www.bamboeseur.nl |
The Bamboeseur is a small, cosy bar-bodega offering the normal range of drinks, snacks and lunches. Evenings, the mezzanine is turned into a small restaurant with a limited European menu of daily vegetarian and non-vegetarion specials. The clientele is mainly under average of age, the CD-player often produces rather loud modern music, the ambiance is mainly jovial and merry. The service at the 10-stool bar is mostly female, friendly and correct. And yes there is Heineken on draught. Review © 2007, Wcities |

An agreeable drink and dinner in a former custom-house |
Cruquiusweg 3 Amsterdam 1019 AT Netherlands +31 (0)20 693 3299 http://www.boulevardcafe.nl/ |
The exterior has not been changed since this custom-house was built in 1901. Inside the ambiance is also being helped by the very high original steel rafters. At the 10-stool bar one is served by friendly people of both sexes, who also serve luncheon and dinner in this roomy place with a glazed veranda, a small raised platform where live music is played at times and a storey-high mezzanine perfectly fit for more private parties, or a rendezvous dinner with an old or new love. Every month a new special beer is introduced, Flemish or Dutch, sometimes from the IJ-brewery nearby. For lunch there are sandwiches and rolls, soup of the day. A blackboard shows the specials of the day. The à la carte menu has a broad choice of first courses, meat and fish dishes, vegetarian food and desserts. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Sleek, comfortable dinner-cinema |

Located in a nice area, this theater-café draws people looking for a conversational night out as well as an intimate dinner for two. Tall ceilings create an open airy atmosphere whether you are sitting on the lower level, or the small upper seating area. The rustic French décor and brass iron railings create a sleek, simple style, which works well with the faint yellow walls. Whether you are coming for a few cocktails or a full meal, the bustling atmosphere will draw you in. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Lucky indeed! |
Haarlemmerstraat 118 Amsterdam 1013 EX Netherlands +31 (0)20 624 4265 |
A hit amongst most age groups, this place is surely one of the favorite hangouts of most Amsterdam citizens. The sleek and wacky décor of this place speaks for its unique character. Steel and glass have been used in the most peculiar manner. The bar and lounge is built on a large area, thus enabling it to adapt to any kind of occasion. And the music is foot tapping with the DJ adding his spice as dusk sets in. Starters, salads, main courses, desserts apart from a wide range of alcohol, comprise the menu. Besides this, there is a 'Dish of the Week' which keeps changing on a weekly basis. Get lucky! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Trendy bar |
Spui 24 Amsterdam 1012 XA Netherlands +31 20 620 6264 http://www.luxembourg.nl |
This Grand Cafe on the Spui is a real landmark. Always busy and very trendy. The kitchen has quite an international feel to it and while it can be a bit pricey, the food is good quality. A decent selection of wines and beers are on offer. A favourite of the dreaded Young Urban Professional, you might think this is not for you but you would be wrong. Luxembourg is a great cafe, the lovely conservatory makes for a great place to hang out and the overall style of the interior is great. It can get very busy, but it is so conveniently located and famous that you really do not have an excuse not to pop in. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Large trendy restaurant |
Watertorenplein 6 Amsterdam 1051 PA Netherlands +31 (0)20 682 2666 http://www.caferestaurantamste... |
At this popular local restaurant, guests enjoy a traditional French/Belgian meal in one of the nicest historical industrial buildings in Netherlands. The building was once a water pumping station and the wonderful but simple atmosphere is enhanced by 22 original floodlights from the old Ajax and Olympic stadiums, both legendary soccer stadiums. The food is straightforward but very good, whilst prices remain relatively low. Salads, oysters, fish, soups and steaks all feature on the menu. The wine list comprises a thoughtfully selected cluster of (mostly French) wines. As this is a popular dining spot, it is advisable to reserve a table. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Inconspicuous nice pub for insiders |

Hidden behind an inconspicuous entrance next to the Golden Tulip Schiller Hotel, one hardly sees the Schiller bar amongst the many pubs on Amsterdams largest amusement area. The guests are mainly insiders and regulars enjoying their drinks and and the products of a good simple kitchen. The clientele is predominantly, but not exclusively, well-educated. There is quiet music from the CD-player and a conversation is always possible and easily started at the 10-stool bar. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Calling it a cafe really doesn't do justice to Cafe American—this is not only the oldest Grand Cafe in the Netherlands, but both the building and its interior are listed monuments and it's easy to see why. The interior is impressive, to say the least, with beautiful stained glass windows, huge murals and quite stunning chandeliers. An antique reading table is also present, well-stocked with the latest newspapers and magazines. In true American style, the cafe has a separate non-smoking area, and to top it off, there is a large terrace that gives a good view of the Leidseplein. This place is definitely one to visit. Typically Dutch |
Plantage Middenlaan 22 Amsterdam 1018 DE Netherlands +31 (0)20 622 5716 http://www.eikenlinde.nl/ |
A very old and queer place is the restaurant Eik en Linde. It's a typical Dutch 'brown' bar and its history dates back to 1858. It has photos and murals on the walls, which tell you various stories and take you back to the past. Food is quite nice and filling, and rest assured, it's easy on your pocket. The staff can be of help if you need them. When it's time to leave, try to look at your own watch as the clock behind can be very confusing, it runs backwards! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Informal and cosy cafe-restaurant |
Zwanenburgwal 15 Amsterdam 1011 VW Netherlands +31 (0)20 620 9039 |
The Dantzig cafe-restaurant is within walking distance of the Rembrandtplein and Theater Carré. During the daytime it looks like a Parisian Grand Café where people walk in and out all the time. At night it serves as a very nice restaurant with an informal atmosphere. A classical theatre-like interior with some modern accents lurks within this cafe-restaurant, whilst outside Dantzig owns probably one of the largest terraces of Amsterdam. Sitting on this sometimes very busy terrace you have a wonderful view of the river Amstel without any traffic to bother you. The service is quick and the staff always smiling. The menu changes each month. On this menu you can find bread, salads and tasty daily dishes at low prices. If you would like to have dinner here, you will have to reserve a table in advance. This cafe is located in the city centre and has a very colourful and stylish interior. You can enjoy a delicious breakfast, a quick lunch or a small dinner here. Relaxed eatery |
Linnaeusstraat 11 Amsterdam 1093 VD Netherlands +31 (0)20 665 0743 |
The restaurant has a very typical essence of the East - from its cane furniture, high windows, yellowish walls to huge elephants painted behind the bar. It's a very chirpy and comfortable place as lots of light flows right through the windows. Food is palatable but not really the best you would find in the region and the staff is pretty affable and helpful. It has an outdoor seating arrangement with a pretty view but during the winter it is quite impossible to sit outside. The crowd that pours in is a mix of tourists, students and locals, especially those who visit the nearby museum. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Aptly named for its dishes, Garlic Queen is a unique little restaurant located in the heart of Amsterdam. The staff has managed to create starters, main dishes - even desserts - using (you guessed it) garlic! Panic not, the staff can also prepare most of the meals without the main ingredient upon request. Guests having dinner at the Garlic Queen can count on a terrific meal, but it is advisable to book a table in advance, as it is certainly popular. Some of the dishes available include Gambas (big shrimps), Corn Chicken and Garlic Ice-Cream! As well as the standard menu, Garlic Queen offers daily specials. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Located on Leidesplein, this Grand Café is everything you would expect from a Grand Café: it's big, it's beautiful, it's expensive and people come here to be seen, especially on weekends. This restaurant may not be everybody's cup of tea, but you'll probably want to have a look around anyway. Depending on the type of person you are, you'll either flee, running for the hills (not easy in Holland!) or blend in with the crowd and refuse to go anywhere else for the rest of the day. The terrace is a nice place to spend a sunny afternoon and there are plenty of sheltered spots inside where you can hang out and enjoy a bit of privacy. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Best French Toast in Amsterdam! |

Hein is a small and charming lunch cafe in Amsterdam's 9 Streets shopping area. Chef/owner Hein Jansen prepares everything herself in the small open kitchen, which customers must walk through to get to the seating area. There is a diverse set menu as well as daily specials. Thick Turkish yogurt with honey, crepes stuffed with chicken, quiche lorraine and fresh lentil salad are all worth trying, but the french toast is the real gem at this joint - pure homemade deliciousness! Hein is also open for private cooking lessons or dinner parties in the evenings, a minimum of 10 guests is required. -Shayne Gottdenker Review © 2007, Wcities |

Students and creative folk |
Spuistraat 189 Amsterdam 1012 VN Netherlands +31 20 638 9357 |
This is quite a large bar, located near Dam Square. It is close to a part of the University and is frequented by students. Schuim translates as "foam", which is probably an indication of their most commonly served drink: beer. Het Schuim is a bit more than your usual student hangout. It gets quite a creative crowd, especially in the evening when the age of the clientèle rises. It looks the part, with that typical "thrown together" interior that seems to be the norm for every trendy bar at the moment. The pictures on the wall, which is used as an art gallery, are changed regularly. Het Schuim will serve about six draught beers and somewhere around 15 bottled beers at any given time. There is almost always one beer that is heavy enough to knock out a small elephant. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The interior is simple, but attractive and the service is friendly en prfessioneel. The large terraces are visited by passersby in all types of boats next to the more pedestrian folk arriving by car or bike. The establishment owns a number of boats of varying size and organises sailing parties and dinners for 10 to 40 people. The normal Dutch lunch dishes are rolls, soup and tapas, of course. The Dutch pannekoek is a more exotic variety of a pancake; more thinner and larger, and definitely more tastier. One of the best places in Amsterdam to savor it is Meneer Pannekoek Café. This Pannekoekenhuis (pancake house) is located conveniently behind the dam and thus is almost always packed. Cosy interiors with Hollywood actors in black and white watch over your table, as the leisurely-moving waiters serve hot and fresh pannekoeks. Lunch all day in this trendy little restaurant |
Haarlemmerstraat 73 Amsterdam 1013 EL Netherlands +31 (0)20 626 2755 |
This trendy little restaurant's motto is 'lunch all day, dinner after 6p' and their image is style, style and some more style on the side. The interior is very minimalist and you get the feeling that some of the clientele is probably here because it's trendy and not for the food. Not to worry though, because you can get a good light meal here and the prices are actually more reasonable than you would expect. Seeing they mainly serve light dishes, this isn't the place to go for a big, festive meal, but at least New Deli tries to do something different and succeeds in making the act of going for lunch a trendy, hip activity. Fusion on the Zeedijk |
Zeedijk 39180 Amsterdam 1012 AX Netherlands +31 20 427 0551 |
This restaurant is located on the Zeedijk. Palmer is definitely one of the better-looking of the many restaurants in the area. It also has a very trendy menu that changes every two months or so. What exactly is a trendy menu? In this case, the cuisine is called 'fusion', and house specialities include such dishes as Freestylers Revenge, Renegade Taste Wave and The G-spot Dish. Apparently, Palmers is an ode to a certain John Palmers, a restaurateur responsible for starting a chain of restaurants in America that are all about good food, friendly service and positive attitude. Most importantly, the food here is good, and like most fusion restaurants there are some more than interesting combinations on the menu. You could just opt for a steak, but most of the dishes are slightly more adventurous with a mix of influences. Palmers is split in two sections: the cafe and the restaurant. The restaurant offers a slightly calmer setting while the cafe is open slightly longer and you can get a drink here. But both of them offer the same menu. Review © 2007, Wcities |

It's all just very cozy and friendly, the owners can only seat about 35 people so you'll have to reserve to make sure you get a table. To show that they take their name seriously, they top off their menu by serving something called ostrich beer-bless them and their ostrich-loving tendencies. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Szmulewicz lies very close to Rembrandtplein and is within walking distance from the Stopera, Carré and Amsterdam's nicest movie theatre, the Tuschinski. It is a restaurant which assures you a nice evening out in this neighbourhood. Szmulewicz has its own special style. Dishes from all over the world are sold at very reasonable prices. There is always a chef's daily special, and main courses are all a good value for what you pay. Try the fillet of beef with an Italian blue cheese sauce. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Drawing inspiration from the album, this restaurant uses organic produce that is locally available. The endeavor is to support 'fair trade' and hence the native producers are the main source of the freshest of ingredients. The Alaska Salmon and Hastings Dover sole have been marked by The Marine Stewardship Council with their blue eco-labels. It's to recognize that Umoja serves sustainable seafood. You can order the desired quantity of the lip smacking fare that is offered here, from the vegetarian dishes to fish, meat, cheeses and desserts. The menu varies everyday and there's always something exciting to look forward to besides the rocking music by Djs. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dining in Vondelpark |
Vondelpark 3 Amsterdam 1071 AA Netherlands +31 (0)20 612 3021 http://www.vertigo.nl/ |
Right in the centre of Vondelpark, lies the Dutch Film Museum. Directly underneath this museum, you'll find Vertigo, named after Alfred Hitchcock's classic. The restaurant offers a wide variety of drinks and meals based on seasonal and film influences and ranging from varied daily specialities to traditional dinners. Wooden tables and the lighting create a cosy atmosphere, whilst constantly changing projections on the walls make Vertigo's decor unique. The pricing is competitive, the cuisine international. Breakfast is served from 11am and it is also possible to have lunch here. It is particularly pleasant to dine here in the summertime. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Veggie Fusion Restaurant |
Frans Halsstraat 29 Amsterdam 1072 BK Netherlands +31 20 679 9609 http://www.waaghals.nl |
De Pijp is full of nice and tasty restaurants. Sometimes it takes a little searching, but the results are always well worth the hunt. The vegetarian restaurant De Waaghals is one such place. The restaurant is also used as a gallery and artists exhibit their work here. The interior changes from time to time and the fun part is that the menus are linked with the exhibitions. The Waaghals likes to serve veggie fusion: no meat, just vegetables, prepared in very special and always delicious ways. The ingredients are all biologically sound - that even goes for the coffee and the toilet paper. See website for menus and exhibition schedule. Review © 2007, Wcities |
