Centrally Located Brasserie |
Rokin 74-76 Amsterdam 1012 KW Netherlands +31 (0)20 624 2582 http://www.beems-brasserie.nl/ |
This is French cuisine with delicious touches of Italy - a brasserie with the allure of a Parisian boulevard café. In the summer, Beems has a large terrace, making it the perfect central lunch destination. The kitchen is open until 9:30p, so dinner is also a possibility. A three-course menu is offered here, but items may also be ordered à la carte. A small menu featuring lighter, lunch-type dishes is available until 5pm. The food served here is of high quality; there is also a delicatessen on premises. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This traditional Belgian restaurant has a creative system of allowing patrons to "choose their own ambiance." Gastronomical, Belgian Baroque, and "The Living Room" are sections of the restaurant that reflect a different aspect of Belgian food and culture. The menus and wine list in all three sections are extensive. Check the website's menu in the English section to better understand the unique characteristics of each part of the restaurant. This important part of the Flemish Cultural Information Center, Exposition Hall and Theater has clear Flemish characteristics in some of the beers on draught: Jupiter and Leffe. There's small snacks to be had in the pub downstairs and a restaurant on the first floor. The clientele is always mainly Dutch, the roomy interior is furnished in a pleasant style, and the service is very friendly and efficient. The large terrace on De Nes is screened from noisy traffic. Belgium is home to an amazing beer culture, so it is little wonder that you can sample its brews all over Amsterdam. At Cafe Belgique, you can find a range of both bottled and draught beers that offer a taste of the many styles available. The cafe itself is very small, giving patrons many reasons to chat with each other and with the staff. Take some time to experiment with the selection of drinks available, as you may end up finding a new favorite. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Charming Pub |
Kloveniersburgwal 125 Amsterdam, NH 1011 Netherlands +31 20 624 9023 |
This charming pub and cafe offers a little more room than many of its fellow establishments, though in Amsterdam that doesn't guarantee more than a few tables inside. The menu of beers offers some of the classic favorites, while still saving room for a few harder-to-find choices. When pleasant weather beckons, there are tables and chairs outside the front door, providing a nice view over the nearby canal. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This Grand Cafe on the Spui is a real landmark. Always busy and very trendy. The kitchen has quite an international feel to it and while it can be a bit pricey, the food is good quality. A decent selection of wines and beers are on offer. A favourite of the dreaded Young Urban Professional, you might think this is not for you but you would be wrong. Luxembourg is a great cafe, the lovely conservatory makes for a great place to hang out and the overall style of the interior is great. It can get very busy, but it is so conveniently located and famous that you really do not have an excuse not to pop in. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The chic interiors boast of mirrored walls and yes that is an advantage—it gives you a clear picture of your cute neighbor seated behind. Do go for the Salade de Crabe—a much recommended salad of this cafe. Review © 2007, Wcities |

One might expect a lot from a member of Fine Eastern Restaurants - and guests won't be disappointed in a visit to Dynasty. Both the food and staff here certainly live up to one's expectations. The menu features many tempting dishes from the Orient. Specialities include dishes from Burma, Vietnam and especially Thailand and China, with ingredients such as duck, lobster, lamb and Szechuan pepper. Due to it's popularity, booking in advance is advisable. If you call to book and the weather is good, ask for a table outside in the courtyard. Aptly named for its dishes, Garlic Queen is a unique little restaurant located in the heart of Amsterdam. The staff has managed to create starters, main dishes - even desserts - using (you guessed it) garlic! Panic not, the staff can also prepare most of the meals without the main ingredient upon request. Guests having dinner at the Garlic Queen can count on a terrific meal, but it is advisable to book a table in advance, as it is certainly popular. Some of the dishes available include Gambas (big shrimps), Corn Chicken and Garlic Ice-Cream! As well as the standard menu, Garlic Queen offers daily specials. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Students and creative folk |
Spuistraat 189 Amsterdam 1012 VN Netherlands +31 20 638 9357 |
This is quite a large bar, located near Dam Square. It is close to a part of the University and is frequented by students. Schuim translates as "foam", which is probably an indication of their most commonly served drink: beer. Het Schuim is a bit more than your usual student hangout. It gets quite a creative crowd, especially in the evening when the age of the clientèle rises. It looks the part, with that typical "thrown together" interior that seems to be the norm for every trendy bar at the moment. The pictures on the wall, which is used as an art gallery, are changed regularly. Het Schuim will serve about six draught beers and somewhere around 15 bottled beers at any given time. There is almost always one beer that is heavy enough to knock out a small elephant. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This restaurant has been standing tall since 1898, and its walls have seen many a lacy gown and tailcoats swishing by—historical trivia dictates that the name De Kroon, which means 'the crown' in Dutch was inspired after the crowning of Queen Wilhelmina in Amsterdam! A touch of elegance lingers in the exotic decor, which boasts of an English library bar. It primarily serves French cuisine. But if you are the kind who wants to let loose and get groovy, then DJ Raymond has the right zing to get you moving. De Kroon also plays host to cocktail parties, receptions and festivals. The bar is technologically equipped with 16 plasma baffles, 5 DVD players thus being popular among the corporate clan. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The Dutch pannekoek is a more exotic variety of a pancake; more thinner and larger, and definitely more tastier. One of the best places in Amsterdam to savor it is Meneer Pannekoek Café. This Pannekoekenhuis (pancake house) is located conveniently behind the dam and thus is almost always packed. Cosy interiors with Hollywood actors in black and white watch over your table, as the leisurely-moving waiters serve hot and fresh pannekoeks. Some of their specials include the delicious smoked salmon and mixed nuts coconut amaretto whipped cream treat. They also serve sandwiches, quiche, soups, omelets, salads and even steak, beef sirloin, hamburger, chicken pasta, hotchpotch or grilled salmon. It is not very difficult to spot La Pampa on Dam Square; the eatery with hordes of people waiting expectantly for their steaks is your destination. Blending authentic ingredients and charcoal-grill cooking, the restaurant brings the best of South American cuisine to Amsterdam. The barbecued ribs and steaks are chunky, well-cooked and juicy; they all come with salad and chips as side dishes. In Amsterdam you have few restaurants that serve cheap and good Dutch food, and De Passage scores on both. Reasonably priced, this eatery offers huge servings of truly authentic preparations. Try the juicy Spare Ribs or the yummy Grilled Salmon with lemon butter. The pastas, salads and fries are also worth relishing. Warm French bread acts as a perfect accompaniment for the main course and Tiramisu is ideal for dessert. The martinis and wines will help in combating the excessive spice and grease. It's a little cramped and stuffy in here but the food more than makes up for it. Review © 2007, Wcities |
