Trendy fusion food |
Prinsenstraat 10 Amsterdam 1015 DC Netherlands +31 (0)20 428 2455 |
This popular fusion restaurant is a relatively new addition to Amsterdam's eateries, having opened in 1998. Just to prove its commitment to the fusion principle, even the interior is a mishmash of new and old, blended together nicely to create a memorable dining experience. The menu combines Eastern and Western influences to good effect and this restaurant is billed as Demi-veg, which indicates a concentration on fish and vegetarian dishes. Add to this a nice wine list, and the final result is a restaurant well worth visiting. Fusion isn't for everybody, but you'll never know unless you try it. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Westerstraat 186 Amsterdam 1015 MR Netherlands +31 20 420 3959 http://www.channels.nl/amsterd... |
Alcantara is a Portuguese restaurant and tapas bar, located in the Jordaan. The building was originally a cinema, still recognizable because of the projection room above the entrance hall. Alcantara serves Portuguese dishes from the cuisine bourgeoise - a substantial cuisine with influences from Catalonia and France. The courses are spiced compared to traditional Portuguese cuisine, but are not particularly exotic. A wide variety of Portuguese drinks are also available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This charming cafe in the De Jordaan district offers a wide range of drinks and food in a comfortable setting. The interior is dark and roomy (by Amsterdam's standards), with several tables and bar stools arranged on a checkered floor. There is also space on a floating platform outside that is ideal during nice weather. In addition to the wide selection of beers, wines, coffees, and teas, the cafe has a full menu of snacks. You can choose from soups, salads, sandwiches, or tapas-style plates to go with your drink. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Cafe Thijssen makes an interesting use of wood in its décor, which explains the very classic look in the furnishings. Step in here in the mornings to read your newspapers over a delicious cup of coffee. If you decide not to come in, the aroma will probably drag you in anyway. You can also sample scrumptious broodjes of ham or cheese, Runderpastrami and the peppery chicken. Although, it does tend to get a bit crowded during the weekends. Review © 2007, Wcities |

For the gourmet whose wallet matches his appetite, Christophe is one of the few restaurants in Amsterdam with a Michelin star. The restaurant was awarded the Michelin star for its inspired cooking, adding innovation to Mediterranean staples like basil, olive oil and saffron to create temptations like White Asparagus with oysters, and Roasted Rabbit. Private dining is available. See website for menu, philosophy and more. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Anyone wanting to try Dutch cuisine in a cosy atmosphere should visit Claes Claesz. The restaurant is located in a historic building, built around 1600 as an orphanage by the cloth-trader Claes Claesz Anslo. In the restaurant you'll discover a special combination of original Dutch cuisine and its modern counterpart. Dishes of high quality, prepared in a classic way, are served in a relaxed atmosphere. On Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays live music provides a slightly different ambiance. Sundays find the restaurant organising special music and theatre dinners. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Belgian Beer with Dutch Atmosphere |
Raamstraat 29 Amsterdam, NH 1016 XL Netherlands +31 20 626 8694 http://www.de-flux.org/dezotte/ |
This place is just off the main tourist area, and all the better for it. For those who manage to find it, there are literally hundreds of different beers to choose from. To help give all that draught a bit of soft landing, they also serve food which is simple, tasty, and (fairly)cheap. The numerous sorts of Belgian beer, bottled or on tap, make it hard to choose, and will keep you on (or falling off) your seat till closing-time. This pub is low-key and very nice for a night of a little beer-experimenting in a friendly atmosphere. -Sandy Hayes Review © 2007, Wcities |

Festina Lente is a comfy hang-out when it's the middle of the day and your hunger demands something more than a breakfast but less than lunch. Lentini means tapas but the menu here serves food portions which more than satisfy one's appetite. One can have meat/fish, pasta, rice and combine them with one of the appetizers. Try the salads, soups or the potato dishes for a mixed variety of Spanish, Greek and traditional flavors. Save room for the lip-smacking desserts; the apple pie and brownies are a treat for the taste-buds. And if you ever have trouble deciding your meal look in the Rococo mirror and order the specials! Best French Toast in Amsterdam! |
Berenstraat 20 Amsterdam, NH 1016 GH Netherlands +31 206231048 |
Hein is a small and charming lunch cafe in Amsterdam's 9 Streets shopping area. Chef/owner Hein Jansen prepares everything herself in the small open kitchen, which customers must walk through to get to the seating area. There is a diverse set menu as well as daily specials. Thick Turkish yogurt with honey, crepes stuffed with chicken, quiche lorraine and fresh lentil salad are all worth trying, but the french toast is the real gem at this joint - pure homemade deliciousness! Hein is also open for private cooking lessons or dinner parties in the evenings, a minimum of 10 guests is required. -Shayne Gottdenker Review © 2007, Wcities |

Hostaria, situated in the Jordaan, is a taste of the real Italy. It certainly isn't your typical tourist-trap pizzeria. The decor is, predictably, authentically Italian: images of La Loren, Ferrari and the Pope merge together, with a singing cook in the background. The cooks are inventive yet the cuisine is based on original Italian family recipes. The pastas are always fresh (made the same day) and the soups and salads are tasty. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Brazilian/Argentinian restaurant serving great meat |
Prinsengracht 703 Amsterdam 1017 JV Netherlands +31 (0)20 420 3910 |
This Brazilian/Argentinean steakhouse is definitely one for the carnivores among us. Iguazu offers a fine selection of traditional Brazilian and Argentinian dishes. A variety of fish dishes are available as well, along with a few respectable salads, but this is a typical South American restaurant: meat is definitely the specialty. Iguazu has a special tourist menu as well as surprise menus that are updated regularly-but don't take these as indicators of a lower-class restaurant. It's actually quite cozy and the meat is top-of-the-range. Sometimes you can even enjoy some live Latin music. Review © 2007, Wcities |

De Reiger is mentioned in the Yellow Pages as a restaurant, but to many, it is just a regular pub before six o'clock. This certainly holds true for the long bar in the front, where dining is hardly possible anyway. During the day the clients are mainly the younger import-Jordanese from the neighborhood. The kitchen is good and offers, in addition to the soup and the dish-of-the-day, a tasty three-course dinner: Meat, fish or vegetarian.
