Albina

Surinamese/Chinese restaurant and shop
Albert Cuypstraat 69
Amsterdam 1072 CN
Netherlands
+31 (0)20 675 5135
In the heart of De Pijp, on Ceintuurbaan, you'll find the Chinese-Surinamese restaurant Albina. This is the friendliest, most delicious roti shop in Amsterdam and offers excellent quality for the prices. This is a very popular spot amongst locals. The restaurant reminds one of a snack bar, but the Surinam food makes Albina well worth a visit. Be sure to try the Black Pudding!

An

Happening Japanese joint

Amsterdam 1017 XG

Run by a young couple, An specializes in authentic Japanese cuisine. The open kitchen provides guests a peep into the chef's quick cooking styles. The ambiance puts you at ease instantly as you mull over the menu. The place doesn't have a liquor license, so bring your own along. The fare is well-priced with decent portions. A take away counter is at hand for those who are on the move. Give An a try, when in Grachtengordel. There's a fat chance you'll enjoy yourself.

Angoletto

Very Italian
Hemonystraat 18
Amsterdam 1074 BP
Netherlands
+31 (0)20 676 4182
Nestled in the happening Pijp area of the city, this Italian eatery is a haven for pastas and pizzas. Bruschettas, carpaccio, Toscan Beef, and other Italian preparations feature on the menu. Portions tend to be small for the prices but the food quells all disappointment. The wines and beer keep spirits high, though, the rude staff can ruin your day. The place gets crowded in the evenings, so be prepared to wait for a table as reservations are not accepted.

In America, the bagel is already a huge success—and now it's also becoming very popular in Holland. At the top of the Albert Cuyp market you'll find Bagels & Beans. Here you can enjoy some delicious bagels for both breakfast and lunch. Many different varieties are on the menu, such as the standard bagel with cream cheese, or with Scottish smoked salmon. Complement your bagel with a blended fruit drink or a bracing cappuccino.

Bakkerswinkel

Lovely little bakery

When you set foot in De Bakkerswinkel you feel like you are entering an old French bakery. The warm smell of baguettes, petit pains au chocolat and big round provençal bread, prepared with olives, garlic, thyme and sun-dried tomatoes tempts even the most strong-willed. De Bakkerswinkel uses traditional French recipes for its goods and there's plenty of space for hungry customers to take a seat. You can fill your stomach with a sandwich, quiche, salad or soup, and enjoy a cup of tea. In the summertime, the little terrace opens up for outside use. You can rent De Bakkerswinkel for a special event, private dinner or to take high tea with some friends.

The Coffee Company brews coffee for all tastes. It has a number of branches in town, but the best one is on Van der Helststraat. Open at 8a, The Coffee Company serves great sandwiches for breakfast and lunch. While sitting at the long wooden tables you can enjoy a really good espresso, cappuccino or a hot chocolate. It's an ideal place for a break when you are shopping on Albert Cuypmarket. In summertime you can sit on their small terrace outside. See website for more.

De Taart van mijn Tante

Pretty Tasty
Ferdinand Bolstraat 10
Amsterdam 1072 LJ
Netherlands

http://www.detaart.com/
This place is famous for incredible-looking cakes that taste heavenly. With two highly creative men behind the concept, some cakes look like they belong in a museum. And they do! Several museums in the Netherlands have exhibited these pastry-wonders that seem to come straight from the Madhatter's Tea Party. You can visit the beautiful patisserie in trendy neighborhood De Pijp and enjoy one of the numerous tastees. The interior suits the servings: everything is colorful, kitsch, retro and there is lots and lots of pink. This place is sweet and a must-visit for anyone who would like to enjoy a sugar-high in Amsterdam. -Sandy Hayes

District V (five) is a very classy restaurant located in the heart of one of Amsterdam's most famous districts, 'De Pijp'. If you are going to have dinner here you should be warned that two things are a bit unusual. First of all they don't have a regular menu. Specialties of the day are written on a small blackboard and then dictated by your server. The menu usually includes a choice of three starters, three main courses and four desserts. Although your choices are somewhat limited, there is something here for just about everyone. The restaurant's second unusual characteristic is that everything here is for sale—the lights, the silverware, the table—in short, you can take this place home with you.

Dèsa offers everything one might expect from an Indonesian restaurant. This 125-seat space serves selected Indonesian dishes cooked in the original style. Guests can enjoy a typical Indonesian "rice-table", which offers all kinds of different dishes from the former Dutch colony. The restaurant is also very well-suited to vegetarians, offering also a vegetarian "rice-table". All dishes are also available à la carte. Particularly noteworthy is the Ayam Goreng Kuning: Marinated Fried Chicken.

Hannibal Lunchroom

Meatball paradise
Ferdinand Bolstraat 92
Amsterdam 1072 LN

The Hannibal restaurant is located near the Albert Cuyp Markt. Hannibal is a combination of sandwich and snack shop—a very popular combination in the Netherlands: the sandwich-snackbar. A mix of customers can be found here: tourists, day trippers and locals visit Hannibal to eat a sandwich or drink coffee. A sandwich with ground steak, roast beef or broodje bal (meatball sandwich) are its specialties, and they are affordable.

Just around the corner from the old Heineken brewery and very close to the Albert Cuyp market (the largest in Amsterdam), De Ondeugd can be found. Its name means naughtiness, but actually there is nothing naughty about it. It is simply an excellent restaurant with high quality food and service. No wonder it's always busy here! However, the meals are not cheap. You will get good quality for your money, though. If you don't feel like meat or fish, try a large salad. Good house wines are on the menu, but it also offers other high quality wines, as is clear from a study of the wine list. As this restaurant is very popular, reservations are recommended.

Saunter into this 'churrascaria' for some delicious Brazilian cooking. Frequented by Brazilian expats and tourists, the place serves Feijoada and Xinxim that tastes like it's straight out of Rio. The Salad Bar offerings include Fish Salad and Tropical Salad, freshly prepared and interestingly served. The comfortable seating and friendly buzz settle you quickly as you wait for your meal, which takes a tad longer than required. Live music and regular events keep the spirits high.

Siempre Tapas

Delicious tapas
1e Sweelinckstraat 23
Amsterdam 1073 CL
Netherlands
+31 (0)20 671 8616
When you step inside this tapas restaurant, it feels almost as if you are in Spain, not Amsterdam. With its smoked hams and dried garlic hanging from the ceiling, and its small bar and tables, this restaurant boasts a very cosy atmosphere. Tapas combination plates are offered, but the real treats (such as the Gambas or the sublime Serrano ham) are not on this list, so you'll need to order these separately. Other Spanish specialities are also available. The wine list is written on a blackboard and is relatively diverse.

Let your palate experience some new flavors at this chic local restaurant. French food takes on an Italian twist as fresh fish, juicy meats, chunky crustaceans and leafy greens get tossed in mysterious seasonings. The cream-and-brown interiors topped with fancy chandeliers set the mood as you sidle into a comfy seat. A part of the menu is made from organic ingredients, while the wine reaffirms the restaurants motto. And what is that? Come and find out!

Tutti Italiani

Amsterdam 1017 XD
Netherlands

Italian food lovers can congregate at La Storia della Vita to savor dishes such as Misto di Pesce, Linguine con Scampi e Arangia, and Gamberi al Cognac. Authentic spirits from Italy such as Sambuca, Grappa and Amaretto don't fail to please. There's also a wine list with classic selections and a decent pricing. Remember to leave room for Panna-cotta al Caffe to finish off your meal. A pianist and amateur crooners entertain diners with Italian arias and impromptu songs. A nice place to bring that special someone.

Amsterdam's only traditional cake parlor, this place might look like a coffee shop from the outside, but inside the true colors shine through. The tables are cloaked not with tablecloths but with rugs, an old Dutch tradition; this is one detail that makes absolutely anyone feel right at home in this cake shop. From the sweet-smelling and gorgeously decorated cakes to the strong coffee and tea, this place is a delight to all of the senses. Whether coming from the Heineken Brewery or the Albert Cuyp Market, this is THE place to stop for your afternoon sugar or caffeine fix. -Rachel Hanson

Vamos a Ver stands out from most other Spanish restaurants in that it does not stop at tapas, but also serves other remarkable and traditional Spanish dishes. You'll have nineteen starters to choose from, of which thirteen can be ordered as tapas. The main courses on the menu show a great deal of premeditation as well: 18 main dishes, including fish, chicken and meat courses. If your party consists of a minimum of two it is also possible to order one of the five famous paellas with fish or chicken. A set menu for children is also available.

The cuisine of Van Vlaanderen is based on original French recipes which have been reworked into modern cuisine. The atmosphere is informal, the staff young and friendly and the ingredients are always fresh. Prices are reasonable. A few other remarkable dishes are available that come especially recommended. Examples are: the Plate Without Prejudice, the Triple M or Marc's Market Mix. A daily game dish and vegetarian set menu are also on the menu and an international wine list guarantees the perfect complement to your meal. On sunny days, it is possible to eat outside.

De Pijp is full of nice and tasty restaurants. Sometimes it takes a little searching, but the results are always well worth the hunt. The vegetarian restaurant De Waaghals is one such place. The restaurant is also used as a gallery and artists exhibit their work here. The interior changes from time to time and the fun part is that the menus are linked with the exhibitions. The Waaghals likes to serve veggie fusion: no meat, just vegetables, prepared in very special and always delicious ways. The ingredients are all biologically sound - that even goes for the coffee and the toilet paper. See website for menus and exhibition schedule.

Yoichi

For sushi-lovers only
Weteringschans 128
Amsterdam 1017 XV
Netherlands
+31 (0)20 622 6829
http://www.yoichi.nl/
info@yoichi.nl
Yoichi is one place you shouldn't miss when in Amsterdam. Kimono-clad waitresses seat you at a table where you can peruse a menu consisting of cooked seaweed, fishcakes, soya bean soup, deep-fried pork filets, pancakes, mixed hotpot, and so on. You can opt either for the regular table or the low table (Japanese style). The minimalist decor is definitely Oriental, with dark wood panels reminiscent of Japanese movies. Vegetarians can check out a special menu just for them. Prices may seem steep, but with food like this, all is forgiven.
