Bern

Swiss pub famous for its cheese dip meals
Nieuwmarkt 9
Amsterdam 1011 JR
Netherlands
+31 (0)20 622 0034
The Nieuwmarkt and the Gelderse Kade are located on the border of the Red Light District, to be sure, but they offer a wide scope of decent and respectable activities. Among the many eating and drinking places, this brown cafe-restaurant 'Bern' distinguishes itself by its excellent kitchen and a free and easy atmosphere, where the right white whine is poured to accompany the superb speciality: Melted Cheese Dip the original Swiss way. The public is not really dominated by the just under average age group.

For some good old Irish cheer, step into the Blarney Stone. The friendly owner Paddy and the lively ambience will make you feel comfortable right away; the wooden flooring, dark wood tables and great music are reminiscent of rural Ireland. Choose your poison from a wide selection of bottled beers and other alcohol beverages. Try something typically Irish like the Guiness or Magner's Cider. If you drop by in the morning, opt for Irish coffee to jump start your day in high spirits! Saunter in and maybe you will catch a live act or simply enjoy a game of pool. Either way you're sure to have a great time with the cheerful locals and various tourists who love hanging out here.

This important part of the Flemish Cultural Information Center, Exposition Hall and Theater has clear Flemish characteristics in some of the beers on draught: Jupiter and Leffe. There's small snacks to be had in the pub downstairs and a restaurant on the first floor. The clientele is always mainly Dutch, the roomy interior is furnished in a pleasant style, and the service is very friendly and efficient. The large terrace on De Nes is screened from noisy traffic.

Cafe Belgique

Netherlands

Belgium is home to an amazing beer culture, so it is little wonder that you can sample its brews all over Amsterdam. At Cafe Belgique, you can find a range of both bottled and draught beers that offer a taste of the many styles available. The cafe itself is very small, giving patrons many reasons to chat with each other and with the staff. Take some time to experiment with the selection of drinks available, as you may end up finding a new favorite.

Cafe De Doelen

Charming Pub
Kloveniersburgwal 125
Amsterdam, NH 1011
Netherlands
+31 20 624 9023
This charming pub and cafe offers a little more room than many of its fellow establishments, though in Amsterdam that doesn't guarantee more than a few tables inside. The menu of beers offers some of the classic favorites, while still saving room for a few harder-to-find choices. When pleasant weather beckons, there are tables and chairs outside the front door, providing a nice view over the nearby canal.

This eatery, which opened in 1976, represents the humble beginnings of a large business empire. The success of the first Cafe Pacifico, which opened in 1976, resulted in several other branches opening up across the globe. This restaurant, located in the Red Light District, is famous for its tasty Mexican fare and drinks. The decor comprises wooden furniture and interesting cut-outs. Munch on some fajitas, tacos and nachos, and wash them down with margaritas. Cafe Pacifico also has a studio for learning salsa, so you dance first and recharge yourself later.

The chic interiors boast of mirrored walls and yes that is an advantage—it gives you a clear picture of your cute neighbor seated behind. High ceilings, brick red walls and drinks stacked right up give Jaren an ultra chic look. Try the Moroccan broodjes or select from the scrumptious salads from the salad bar. Do go for the Salade de Crabe—a much recommended salad of this cafe.

Centra

Real Spanish Food
Lange Niezel 29
Amsterdam 1012 GS
Netherlands
+31 (0)20 622 3050
Centra is the place in which to sample authentic Spanish atmosphere, wine and tapas. The Formica tables, stacks of beer crates and fluorescent lighting all add to the authentic Spanish atmosphere. A showcase dominates part of the restaurant front, featuring a small bar with low barstools, serving tapas and drinks whilst guests wait for tables. Reservations are usually futile—it's always crowded here! Spanish waiters (or so they appear as they are clad in the traditional black-and-white) serve the delicious dishes in a somewhat hectic (but friendly) manner. The prices are not especially low, but the food on the other hand is worth it.

Chao Phraya

Thai restaurant with good food and lovely salads
Nieuwmarkt 10
Amsterdam 1012 CR

This is a cozy Thai restaurant on the Nieuwmarkt. This area of Amsterdam is littered with good little restaurants, most of them Chinese, so some Thai food comes as a nice change. Chao Phraya is quite popular, especially as a lunch restaurant. Rightfully so, as there is no greater joy than sitting in the sun on Niewmarkt scoffing down some fried rice with beef. Special mention has to go to the nice salads and the friendly service. The prices are also very reasonable.

Informal and cosy cafe-restaurant
Zwanenburgwal 15
Amsterdam 1011 VW
Netherlands

The Dantzig cafe-restaurant is within walking distance of the Rembrandtplein and Theater Carré. During the daytime it looks like a Parisian Grand Café where people walk in and out all the time. At night it serves as a very nice restaurant with an informal atmosphere. A classical theatre-like interior with some modern accents lurks within this cafe-restaurant, whilst outside Dantzig owns probably one of the largest terraces of Amsterdam. Sitting on this sometimes very busy terrace you have a wonderful view of the river Amstel without any traffic to bother you. The service is quick and the staff always smiling. The menu changes each month. On this menu you can find bread, salads and tasty daily dishes at low prices. If you would like to have dinner here, you will have to reserve a table in advance.

Opened in 1992 by Bert and Sara van Buschbach (Bert having worked in some of the city's best restaurants; Sara a wine expert), De Compagnon is considered by locals as one of the best French restaurants in town. It boasts an excellent Burgundian menu (veal sweetbreads, dates stuffed with goose liver) and a fabulous wine selection, all fairly affordable. The décor is pleasant, with attention to privacy; the tables are spread over three floors creating a feeling of intimacy. Lovely drawings of Amsterdam throughout the last few centuries adorn the walls.

This literary pub is located in the middle of the old city centre on a quiet canal where very little reading is ever done, but very nice old-fashioned jazz is played by the house-band. This place is seldom really packed and the quiet young and old fans of this traditional acoustic music alway have plenty of room and do not have to push and pull to get near their adored musicians. The young female service behind the bar is fast and efficient.

Evita Resturant/ Steakhouse

Steakhouse with a splendid view
Oudebrugsteeg 16
Amsterdam, NH 1012 JP
Netherlands
+31 20 626 1259
Located on the second floor of a monumental premises, Evita is your classic steakhouse albeit with a sophisticated ambiance. The eclectic eatery borrows heavily from the South American and Spanish cuisine and consistently innovates on its gourmet delights. The assortment of charcoal grilled meat is delectable and so are the crunchy salads and the sinful desserts. The beef pepper steak is a hot favorite and the barbecued chicken gives it a tough fight. But the real puller here is the panoramic view of the city at night. Amongst the dime a dozen steakhouses mushrooming all over Amsterdam, Evita stands out for more reasons than one.

Palmers

Fusion on the Zeedijk
Zeedijk 39180
Amsterdam 1012 AX
Netherlands
+31 20 427 0551
This restaurant is located on the Zeedijk. Palmer is definitely one of the better-looking of the many restaurants in the area. It also has a very trendy menu that changes every two months or so. What exactly is a trendy menu? In this case, the cuisine is called 'fusion', and house specialities include such dishes as Freestylers Revenge, Renegade Taste Wave and The G-spot Dish. Apparently, Palmers is an ode to a certain John Palmers, a restaurateur responsible for starting a chain of restaurants in America that are all about good food, friendly service and positive attitude. Most importantly, the food here is good, and like most fusion restaurants there are some more than interesting combinations on the menu. You could just opt for a steak, but most of the dishes are slightly more adventurous with a mix of influences. Palmers is split in two sections: the cafe and the restaurant. The restaurant offers a slightly calmer setting while the cafe is open slightly longer and you can get a drink here. But both of them offer the same menu.
