Charming Pub |
Kloveniersburgwal 125 Amsterdam, NH 1011 Netherlands +31 20 624 9023 |
This charming pub and cafe offers a little more room than many of its fellow establishments, though in Amsterdam that doesn't guarantee more than a few tables inside. The menu of beers offers some of the classic favorites, while still saving room for a few harder-to-find choices. When pleasant weather beckons, there are tables and chairs outside the front door, providing a nice view over the nearby canal. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Inconspicuous nice pub for insiders |
Rembrandtplein 26-36 Amsterdam 1017 CV Netherlands +31 (0)20 554 0723 |
Hidden behind an inconspicuous entrance next to the Golden Tulip Schiller Hotel, one hardly sees the Schiller bar amongst the many pubs on Amsterdams largest amusement area. The guests are mainly insiders and regulars enjoying their drinks and and the products of a good simple kitchen. The clientele is predominantly, but not exclusively, well-educated. There is quiet music from the CD-player and a conversation is always possible and easily started at the 10-stool bar. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Rock on!! |
Nieuwe Doelenstraat 20-22 Amsterdam 1012 CP Netherlands +31 (0)20 625 5771 http://www.cafe-de-jaren.nl |
The chic interiors boast of mirrored walls and yes that is an advantage—it gives you a clear picture of your cute neighbor seated behind. High ceilings, brick red walls and drinks stacked right up give Jaren an ultra chic look. Try the Moroccan broodjes or select from the scrumptious salads from the salad bar. Do go for the Salade de Crabe—a much recommended salad of this cafe. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Voetboogstraat 13-15 Amsterdam 1012 XK Netherlands +31 (0)20 622 4608 http://www.cafedeschutter.nl/ info@cafedeschutter.nl |
This joint has a reputation with the college crowd as a cool hangout. The decor comprises stained glass windows, wooden furniture and posters of upcoming cultural events. The vegetarian dishes, pies and the fries are popular, but regulars are obviously more drawn to the tea, beer and whisky. People come here to play cards, chess and pinball. Card competitions are also held here. The music played ranges from jazz and pop to metal. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Informal and cosy cafe-restaurant |
Zwanenburgwal 15 Amsterdam 1011 VW Netherlands +31 (0)20 620 9039 |
The Dantzig cafe-restaurant is within walking distance of the Rembrandtplein and Theater Carré. During the daytime it looks like a Parisian Grand Café where people walk in and out all the time. At night it serves as a very nice restaurant with an informal atmosphere. A classical theatre-like interior with some modern accents lurks within this cafe-restaurant, whilst outside Dantzig owns probably one of the largest terraces of Amsterdam. Sitting on this sometimes very busy terrace you have a wonderful view of the river Amstel without any traffic to bother you. The service is quick and the staff always smiling. The menu changes each month. On this menu you can find bread, salads and tasty daily dishes at low prices. If you would like to have dinner here, you will have to reserve a table in advance. A Lot of Garlic |
Reguliersdwarsstraat 57 Amsterdam 1017 BJ Netherlands +31 (0)20 422 6426 http://www.garlicqueen.nl info@garlicqueen.nl |
Aptly named for its dishes, Garlic Queen is a unique little restaurant located in the heart of Amsterdam. The staff has managed to create starters, main dishes - even desserts - using (you guessed it) garlic! Panic not, the staff can also prepare most of the meals without the main ingredient upon request. Guests having dinner at the Garlic Queen can count on a terrific meal, but it is advisable to book a table in advance, as it is certainly popular. Some of the dishes available include Gambas (big shrimps), Corn Chicken and Garlic Ice-Cream! As well as the standard menu, Garlic Queen offers daily specials. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Unwind in style |
Utrechtsestraat 137 Amsterdam 1017 VM Netherlands +31 (0)20 627 0575 http://www.huyschkaemer.nl/ info@huyschkaemer.nl |
The first thing that strikes you as you walk into this restaurant is its unique decor. The blue-and-orange interior is vamped up with ladders, huge windows and metal accessories that create a post-industrial effect. Locals, tourists, gays and the generally arty clan can be seen enjoying meals and drinks in the laid-back ambiance. The place has a neat bar counter, where you can catch up on the latest news over a drink. Since it is located on the Utrechtsestraat—a street full of stores and eateries—De Huyschkaemer is constantly abuzz with people moving in and out. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Trendy food with a fabulous view |
Amstel 2 Amsterdam 1017 AA Netherlands +31 (0)20 639 2899 |
Restaurant Inez IPSC (International Private Society Club) was opened by the late Peter Giele, founder of other trendy spots around town; his wife Inez runs it. The menu includes Asian and Middle Eastern influences, is as flamboyant as the colorful interior, and complemented by stylish service. You can order à la carte or choose a fixed-price menu. An ideal place for the hip and trendy, this restaurant lies in the middle of the city center. The spectacular view overlooking Munt leads artists, designers and diners alike to find inspiration here. Glory of the crown |
Rembrandtplein 17-1 Amsterdam 1017 CT Netherlands +31 (0)20 625 2011 http://www.dekroon.nl/ |
This restaurant has been standing tall since 1898, and its walls have seen many a lacy gown and tailcoats swishing by—historical trivia dictates that the name De Kroon, which means 'the crown' in Dutch was inspired after the crowning of Queen Wilhelmina in Amsterdam! A touch of elegance lingers in the exotic decor, which boasts of an English library bar. It primarily serves French cuisine. But if you are the kind who wants to let loose and get groovy, then DJ Raymond has the right zing to get you moving. De Kroon also plays host to cocktail parties, receptions and festivals. The bar is technologically equipped with 16 plasma baffles, 5 DVD players thus being popular among the corporate clan. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Come by to try some fine Indian flavors. Memories of India pays tribute to some time honored recipes from the culturally diverse country. An interesting menu comprises of vegetarian and meat dishes. Try the famous North Indian Biryani—it is made with Basmati rice and other rich ingredients. The creative dishes include Paneerwala Murg made from cottage cheese and the Bengal Prawns, served with saffron rice, okra and beans. They also have special menu for one, in case you are not sure what to order. The side dishes go very well with the traditional Indian bread—Roti and Naan. Although Indian food need not be complemented with a drink, you can go ahead and order a wine from the drinks menu. Or choose to end your meal with a dessert and a hot cup of Indian tea. Cozy French restaurant |
Utrechtsestraat 49 Amsterdam 1017 VH Netherlands +31 (0)20 622 7419 |
Located just between Theatre Carré, the Stopera and the famous Rembrandtplein, this cosy restaurant serves mainly French cuisine. Many different dishes are available, all reasonably priced. Well worth trying is the Mustard Soup. The most expensive starters are fish or meat dishes. Eleven main dishes are shown on the menu, all served with vegetables, salad and potatoes. Try the Poached Scottish Salmon with Chives. If there's nothing on the menu that tickles your fancy, have a look at the blackboard to see which daily specials are featured. Review © 2007, Wcities |

While music is gently playing in the background, you will be received in a demure room with paintings on the walls. The restaurant offers the opportunity to order à la carte as well as from a set menu. The specialities here include partridge with walnut-salad and grilled mackerel. Wine-lovers are lucky. Bakkersstraat 12 Amsterdam 1017 CW Netherlands +31 (0)20 620 2822 http://www.szmulewicz.nl/ restaurant@szmulewicz.nl |
Szmulewicz lies very close to Rembrandtplein and is within walking distance from the Stopera, Carré and Amsterdam's nicest movie theatre, the Tuschinski. It is a restaurant which assures you a nice evening out in this neighbourhood. Szmulewicz has its own special style. Dishes from all over the world are sold at very reasonable prices. There is always a chef's daily special, and main courses are all a good value for what you pay. Try the fillet of beef with an Italian blue cheese sauce. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Thai meets Dutch |
Utrechtsestraat 87 Amsterdam 1017 VN Netherlands +31 (0)20 622 0577 |
After a bout of shopping in the lovely Utrechtsestraat, come to this eatery to taste the fusion of Thai recipes with Dutch flavors. Choose among the soft, spicy or killing curries from the menu. Patrons would recommend the Fried Fish in Lemongrass and Thai Basil as a must-try. The staff is not familiar with either English or Dutch, but you can rest assured that you would be served just what you have ordered. Review © 2007, Wcities |
