Typical Dutch cuisine |
Leidsekruisstraat 28 Amsterdam 1017 RJ Netherlands +31 (0)20 627 0521 |
This small, cozy restaurant provides a nice change and a chance to sample traditional Dutch cuisine. It is popular among locals (especially the student fraternity) for its good prices, delicious food and casual atmosphere. "Typical Dutch cuisine" may sound a little confusing: imagine vegetables mixed together with other vegetables to make... mashed up vegetables. It may not sound very appetizing, but you'll never know unless you try. This is a great place for everyone, but can prove especially enjoyable for tourists: meals take place at communal tables, which provides an opportunity to meet some very interesting people. Eat, Drink and be Merry |
12 Egelantiersgracht Amsterdam, NH 1015 Netherlands +31 20 344 4560 |
This charming cafe in the De Jordaan district offers a wide range of drinks and food in a comfortable setting. The interior is dark and roomy (by Amsterdam's standards), with several tables and bar stools arranged on a checkered floor. There is also space on a floating platform outside that is ideal during nice weather. In addition to the wide selection of beers, wines, coffees, and teas, the cafe has a full menu of snacks. You can choose from soups, salads, sandwiches, or tapas-style plates to go with your drink. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Classic yet contemporary |
Brouwersgracht 107 Amsterdam 1015 GD Netherlands +31 (0)20 623 8994 http://www.cafe-thijssen.nl/ |
Cafe Thijssen makes an interesting use of wood in its décor, which explains the very classic look in the furnishings. Step in here in the mornings to read your newspapers over a delicious cup of coffee. If you decide not to come in, the aroma will probably drag you in anyway. You can also sample scrumptious broodjes of ham or cheese, Runderpastrami and the peppery chicken. Although, it does tend to get a bit crowded during the weekends. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dining with attitude |
Marnixstraat 381 Amsterdam 1016 XR Netherlands +31 (0)20 625 4482 http://www.cafedekoe.nl/ |
De Koe (The Cow) is a real bovine bonanza! Pictures of cows, sketches of cows, cow statues, and other assorted cow objects are abound. In order to keep it fresh, the paintings on the ceiling change sporadically showcasing new artists. For cocktails or beer, you can head straight upstairs to the bar, or dine in a small, comfortable setting downstairs. The food ranges from hot dishes, to pastas and salads. As locals and tourists alike frequent this restaurant for it's bubbly atmosphere, friendly service and tasty food, expect to wait upstairs at the bar before dining. Live bands play on the weekends. Dutch Cuisine |
Egelantiersstraat 24 Amsterdam 42.7916666666667 Netherlands +31 (0)20 625 5306 http://www.claesclaesz.nl |
Anyone wanting to try Dutch cuisine in a cosy atmosphere should visit Claes Claesz. The restaurant is located in a historic building, built around 1600 as an orphanage by the cloth-trader Claes Claesz Anslo. In the restaurant you'll discover a special combination of original Dutch cuisine and its modern counterpart. Dishes of high quality, prepared in a classic way, are served in a relaxed atmosphere. On Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays live music provides a slightly different ambiance. Sundays find the restaurant organising special music and theatre dinners. Review © 2007, Wcities |

New Dutch Delicacies |
Roelof Hartstraat 1 Amsterdam, NH 1071 VE Netherlands +31 20 571 1511 http://www.thecollegehotel.com... |
Housed in a heritage building, The College Hotel Restaurant was formerly a school resembling the nearby Rijks Museum. Here, the dining experience is marked with class. Aromas of cinnamon, anise, nutmeg and pepper waft around the interestingly designed presentations. With a hint of traditional Dutch taste, the food is delicious and contemporary. This diner at College Hotel (The) is open daily for breakfast and serves lunch and dinner from Monday to Saturday. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Best French Toast in Amsterdam! |
Berenstraat 20 Amsterdam, NH 1016 GH Netherlands +31 206231048 |
Hein is a small and charming lunch cafe in Amsterdam's 9 Streets shopping area. Chef/owner Hein Jansen prepares everything herself in the small open kitchen, which customers must walk through to get to the seating area. There is a diverse set menu as well as daily specials. Thick Turkish yogurt with honey, crepes stuffed with chicken, quiche lorraine and fresh lentil salad are all worth trying, but the french toast is the real gem at this joint - pure homemade deliciousness! Hein is also open for private cooking lessons or dinner parties in the evenings, a minimum of 10 guests is required. -Shayne Gottdenker Review © 2007, Wcities |

Informal international restaurant |
Oude Waal 39336 Amsterdam 1011 BZ Netherlands +31 (0)20 624 3203 http://www.hemelsemodder.nl/ |
'Heavenly Mud' is the literal translation of the name of this establishment, located near the Nieuwmarkt on one of Amsterdam's oldest canals. This is a modern restaurant with a bright and inviting interior. Of course, it is also pleasant (weather permitting) to enjoy your meal outside. The menu is very international—Dutch, French, Italian and Oriental cuisine are all represented (including a variety of vegetarian dishes). The atmosphere makes it a hassle-free place for a casual meal. Several prix fixe menus are available daily. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Pancake palace |
Raadhuisstraat 6 Amsterdam, NH 1012 TJ Netherlands +31 20 627 8500 |
The Dutch pannekoek is a more exotic variety of a pancake; more thinner and larger, and definitely more tastier. One of the best places in Amsterdam to savor it is Meneer Pannekoek Café. This Pannekoekenhuis (pancake house) is located conveniently behind the dam and thus is almost always packed. Cosy interiors with Hollywood actors in black and white watch over your table, as the leisurely-moving waiters serve hot and fresh pannekoeks. Some of their specials include the delicious smoked salmon and mixed nuts coconut amaretto whipped cream treat. They also serve sandwiches, quiche, soups, omelets, salads and even steak, beef sirloin, hamburger, chicken pasta, hotchpotch or grilled salmon. The cafe is also one of the rare Dutch restaurants to have a non-smoking area. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Momma's cooking! |
Vinkenstraat 119 Amsterdam 1013 JN Netherlands +31 (0)20 623 7643 |
Moeder's Pot (better understood as Mother's Pot) is a place where you can hang out and enjoy your meal without any reserves or artificial sophistication. The interiors have a rustic charm to them and that just adds to the comfortable ambience. Feast on finely cooked meals that remind you of mom's cooking. The whole eatery is run by one man, so don't be offended if he rushes back to the kitchen while you are still making up your mind about what to eat. Review © 2007, Wcities |

If you're thinking freshly baked homemade pancakes, then head here. What's more inviting is the ambiance in which you can feast on, at a gabled canal house. The friendly wait staff is more than eager to help you out and get you your order. The menu features items like Pancake with Cheese, Sunflower Seeds, Onions and Mushrooms and dessert items including Hot Cherry, Vanilla Ice Cream, Cherry Liqueur and Whipped Cream Pancake—could ask for more pancake options? Go Dutch! |
Nieuwendijk 224 Amsterdam, NH 1012 MX Netherlands +31 20 624 8439 http://www.de-passage.com |
In Amsterdam you have few restaurants that serve cheap and good Dutch food, and De Passage scores on both. Reasonably priced, this eatery offers huge servings of truly authentic preparations. Try the juicy Spare Ribs or the yummy Grilled Salmon with lemon butter. The pastas, salads and fries are also worth relishing. Warm French bread acts as a perfect accompaniment for the main course and Tiramisu is ideal for dessert. The martinis and wines will help in combating the excessive spice and grease. It's a little cramped and stuffy in here but the food more than makes up for it. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Take your mom out for that long due dinner that you promised her and what better place than Restaurant Moeders. The walls are splashed with pictures of doting mothers. The interiors have a very homely feel to it, mostly done up in green. Take up a cozy seat in a corner or go out and dine alfresco. There is an a la carte menu on offer. The 'Mmm...Mama's Happas' are recommended and come cheap too. Pair your meal with a pick from the wine list. Don't forget to relish the yummy desserts. Review © 2007, Wcities |
