If you get homesick during your travels, a bowl of soup from ‘T Koemmeke Soep will cure your sorrows. Located on a residential street a few blocks away from the university, this soup kitchen feels more like cozy living room than restaurant. The philosophy of the caf is that soup is more than just a dish, but rather a reminder of simpler, quieter times- back when we were children in our grandmothers’ kitchens. As you sip your meal, enjoy the homey atmosphere and the company. The owners’ nine year-old granddaughter will be your waitress on her days off from school. Menu changes weekly. - Alex Phillips

Great meat dishes opposite the abattoir
Lange Lobroekstraat 51
Antwerp 2060
Belgium

http://www.lammeke.be/
This is considered to be one of the best meat restaurants in Antwerp, and it's no coincidence that it's situated in front of the abattoir just outside the city centre. 't Lammeke (The Little Lamb) has also been mentioned in the famous Michelin Guide. It is a pleasant place, and business guests as well as workers from the nearby dockyards are at ease here. The meat is ordered by weight. You choose the cut of meat before they cook it and you can decide in advance if the size and quality is to your liking. Besides many meat dishes, there are some seasonal suggestions and two menus that change every month. For those who are not so fond of meat, there are delicious fish dishes. The varied wine card (120 different types) offers enough choice to complement every dish perfectly.

A popular spot in the Antwerp night-life scene, the decor of Cafe Local resembles a Cuban town. The grand dance site can tempt even an amateur dancer to get on to the floor and experiment those groovy moves. And what is it popular for exactly? Salsa! A separate bar area segregates the venue and also gives a bit of privacy. A coffee shop finds itself on the top floor. So drink, dance and then let the effects slide off with a good round of coffee. And if you wish to flaunt your dance moves, make sure you join their salsa course.

The interiors are a combination of a modern French brasserie and some high-tech design. There is a garden terrace at the back with Japanese highlights. The owners are friendly and offer newspapers to the guests to make them feel at ease. The house desserts are among the most creative in Antwerp. Try the Almond Tart with Smoked Bacon Caramel Sauce or one of its many more unusual sweets. The professional staff is always pleasant and help you make your visit memorable.

Grand Café Horta is situated between Rubenshuis and the City Theatre in an exclusive contemporary building. The original steel structure has a very open and inviting ambiance. The cooking is equally extravagant with lots of traditional dishes, beers, fusion salads and pastas and delicious fish courses. This is a chic place with reasonable prices. On the second floor, they have the Art Nouveau room for very big parties and huge gatherings.

This large 19th Century Patrician house with high ceilings, grand oak doors and wonderful wooden floors is a great place for business people. There are various dining areas: you can watch the chef cooking or choose a more intimate table if you feel romantic. The green patio is large enough for parties up to 100 people. The menu board with suggestions offers exquisite dishes (French cuisine) such as half a lobster belle vue or the terrine de foie gras. Taste one of the great wines and finish with a cigar (special card).

This is a popular restaurant, thriving thanks to its exquisite food and its location opposite the Court of Antwerp. The Haddock is where many lawyers and solicitors have their lunch. The stylish interior is matched by the swift and efficient service of the staff. Chic and trendy—this is the place to be when you are in need of a drink and good company. Expect to mingle with budding fashion designers and such clientèle, as you sip your way through the eclectic bar list, listening to live music in the background. The futuristic interiors of this basement bar are embellished by a good-looking wait staff that hastens to add a generous garnishing of strawberries or a dollop of vodka to your choice of poison. Thursday evenings are the best, when the place gets buzzing, but be prepared to jostle for space. This is also a great place for a traditional breakfast or a quick Belgian snack, if you can manage to grab a table on the terrace, facing the waterfront.

This restaurant is located in the neighborhood known by the locals as 'Little Paris.' This short stretch of the Graanmarkt and some of the streets around it are indeed reminiscent of the cafés and alleys in Paris. The interior here is sober with dark wooden tables and chairs, mirrors on the wall, a bar at the far end and a covered terrace in front of the restaurant. Smoked eel on toast is just one of the fine and authentic dishes that you should try here. In general, portions are generous and complete. Diners can order either a la carte or from the suggestion board.

The name of this establishment is Flemish for "The Eleventh Commandment", which orders patrons to indulge: remember to eat and drink well! That is not too hard to do here—five tap beers and around 45 other varieties wait to be guzzled amid a collection of the oddest Catholic artifacts that rouse curiosity. Regulars recommend the Trappist Westmalle, with a quick meal on the terrace level. Mussels are the specialty of the house, and a separate smoking room awaits the more rambunctious crowd. Bustling with tourists who cannot get enough of the church memorabilia on camera, this spot is a known watering-hole near the Cathedral and well worth a visit.

This restaurant, nestled among many other eateries, lies across the Royal Museum of Fine Arts. What's with the unusual name? Well, it origins from the former Hippodroom building, which used to be an entertainment center. Interesting works of art accentuate the walls and the decorative lighting plays with it. The romantic getup is set in by soft candlelight on each table. The bar area, an attractive feature by itself, is complemented by the good list of liquors and Belgian beers. The menu lists contemporary cuisine with French flavors. Try the popular dish Scallop Carpaccio with Algae Tartare or the Baked Cod with Gnocci and Fowl Gravy. Marinated strips of beef with orange sauce and rice are definitely worth trying, and if you like wok dishes this is the place to be. One of the oldest tapas bars in town, Tapabar is also known to be a good restaurant with a complete menu. The Moorish mosaic tiles and Spanish wooden bar tables and chairs lend it an atmosphere both elegant and comfortable. The place features a small stage where flamenco dancers show their talents amaze you with their moves. The joint serves excellent, authentic Spanish dishes made with the freshest ingredients like smoked ham, calamari, rabbit, and refreshing salads. However, if you want their famous Paella, you must order in advance.

This restaurant is highly commended by the culinary press and if you want to meet famous stars from Belgian television, then this is the place to be. The Troubadour distinguishes itself by its artistic and fine decoration. Especially the Venetian drawing room, with a maximum capacity of 38 people, is a place to dream away about times gone by. This is a very innovative kitchen with an exceptional level of tastes that can be found in a variety of its select dishes. The Troubadour has a perfectly balanced wine card with vintages from the famous French Châteaux. Chef John Verbeeck is a passionate gourmet.

This restaurant has been going strong for years and has a great reputation for serving excellent steaks. The interiors have a classical Mediterranean look and has heavy wooden tables, chairs and a wooden floor. The specialties of the eatery include fillet mignon, marinated ribs with potato and bacon salad. The fanatics of French fries will be disappointed here because the joint only serves baked potatoes. The house wine is Spanish, but it also serves wines from Chili. Ulcke Van Zurich seats 80 people and hosts parties of up to 24 people, so this is a nice place for you to throw a party.

De Vagant is really something special: a genever bar and restaurant with a few hundred kinds of genever liquor. It's situated right in the heart of old Antwerp. Downstairs you can relax in the cozy café with old posters and photos and try one or two or more of the genevers. The genever card lists a few hundred fruit and grain genevers. Upstairs in the restaurant, genever is the main ingredient in most of the dishes. There are 4 different fixed menus with three, four or five courses or you can eat à la carte and just take one or two genever dishes.

Antwerp 2060
Belgium

Right opposite the slaughter houses near the Sportpaleis you have several so—called meat restaurants, and the Veehandel (Cattle Trade) is one of them. This attractive restaurant goes back to the '50s and hundreds of photos and drawings decorate the walls and tell the story of the cattle industry. There's no better place to eat quality meat than in De Veehandel. If you prefer not to eat meat, try some of the best tomate crevette (tomato filled with shrimps)in town.

Mediterranean with a Flemish touch

Belgium

In the center of the city in the quiet Hoofdkerkstraat, you can do some lovely wining and dining in an old loft with a beautiful façade that dates from the 16th century. In 1550, the loft of this historical building in the old city, which belonged to the Spanish sailor Don Diego, was transformed into a restaurant called 't Zolderke (Flemish for small loft). This authentic loft is built in the shape of a ship turned upside-down. It has a piano on the first floor and your requests are played. The chef goes to the fish and meat markets daily to buy fresh products for the restaurant. La cuisine française, la cucina italiana and traditional Flemish cooking are combined in a menu that varies by season. Here, the food is delicious, the wine is excellent, and the prices are modest.

This restaurant in the old city. This bistro is not too formal and moderately priced for the excellent cuisine. The menu has more contemporary dishes like salads and pastas and the cooking comprises Mediterranean and Belgian cuisine. Try the salad with fried goat cheese or the Fresh Cod à la Flamand.

Luckily, this former derelict building was recently refurbished and transformed into a lively brasserie with a formidable reputation among world culture enthusiasts. The interior of this former hydraulic electricity plant was refurbished by the renown Antwerp architect Bob Van Reeth who specializes in simplicity with style. The space is large and airy, with lots of light. The bar is at the far end and it also has a small theatre, which is the venue for a multitude of musical and theatre acts. You will find flyers at the entrance about upcoming events. This eatery serves exotic snacks with an emphasis on traditional tastes from around the world.

Belgium
+32 3 234 1275
This is one of the most remarkable modern buildings along the river Scheldt. Architect Bob Van Reeth designed this contemporary restaurant-and-brasserie that offers a superb view of the river through large windows. Try the artichoke salad or the Cod with Vegetable Purée, both of which are fantastic. You can come here for a light lunch or a snack, or even for just a coffee or a beer. Or munch on the dishes from à la carte menu while sampling an excellent wine. If you're into modern design, you shouldn't miss coming here, its minimalist furniture in a black-and-white color scheme with maritime design elements is unforgettable.
