This is a restaurant where you can taste Antwerp's history. Painter Adriaan De Brouwer used to have his studio and house in this building. Historical highlights are harmoniously combined with modern elements here. Historical books as well as lifestyle magazines are also on offer. The menu offers a wide choice of snacks, salads and even vegetarian dishes. From time to time, live animation is provided and this can be enjoyed from the restaurant as well as the bar. Welcome break on the Meir |
Wapper 1A Antwerp 2000 Belgium +32 3 232 3675 http://www.resto.be/bistro |
Walking down the Meir from the Central Station, turn left at Wapper Square and you'll find a very nice bistro sporting a summer terrace. This is the ideal spot for a break if you're out shopping on Antwerp's longest shopping street. The décor is stylish with cozy sitting booths and pleasant lighting. You won't fail to notice the display of desserts at the counter. You should really try one of the salads, like the Neptunus Bowl. Even big eaters won't leave here hungry. Try one of the typical Flemish snacks or special dishes for children. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Vegetarians' delight |
Kasteelpleinstraat 45-47 Antwerp 2000 Belgium +32 3 232 0203 http://www.resto.be/broersvanj... |
Located on a side street off the Britselei, this rare gem is a favorite of vegetarians, offering several quiche and fish dishes. Julienne's stew with pasta is just one of the specialities. There are daily specials as well as a menu for the kids. The decor is pleasant with its high wooden cabinets. You can also enjoy dining al fresco, weather permitting. Review © 2007, Wcities |

French cuisine with Oriental influences |
Arenbergstraat 30 Antwerp 2000 Belgium +32 3 203 5411 |
This restaurant is part of the Alfa Theater Hotel and is one of the high quality places in Antwerp. It's a modern restaurant with a cozy atmosphere thanks to the ochre-colored walls, the light-oak parquet floor with black strips, the cane chairs, the modern wooden cabinets and the antique Carrousel horse dating from 1895. Restaurant Carrousel distinguishes itself with an eclectic menu consisting of French, Oriental, Spanish and Italian tastes. The wide choice is also reflected on the wine card, which lists wines, by the type of grape. There are a variety of 60 wines from ten different countries. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Centre Ville's diverse menu caters to nearly any culinary whim. The main dining room feels quite cozy, and one can enjoy the delights of a typical Belgian–French menu. For a small bite to eat or just to have a drink you can move to the café area where you will enjoy the fragrance of freshly-brewed espresso. Try one of their exotic rolls or savor a cool beer while having a chat with some friends. Sit back and watch the colorful world of the contemporary Nationalestraat go by. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Quality pita-bar |
Graaf van Hoornestraat 1 Antwerp 2000 Belgium +32 3 248 7714 |
On the Leopold De Wael square near the Royal Museum for Fine Arts sits a bar or restaurant at every corner, but this pita-bar run by Israelis is really worth mentioning. The whole concept is very professional and you'll definitely want to come back for more once you've tried one of their pita-shwarmas with chicken, lamb or turkey. They also have vegetarian pitas and full dishes. Don't forget to try their Nana (tea with fresh mint). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Original breakfast, lunch and desserts |
Kasteelpleinstraat 49 Antwerp 2000 Belgium +32 3 226 1199 |
This eatery should be on the itinerary of each foodie passing through this city. The food here is of outstanding quality—impressing the patrons not only with taste but also with presentation. The interiors are a combination of a modern French brasserie and some high-tech design. There is a garden terrace at the back with Japanese highlights. The owners are friendly and offer newspapers to the guests to make them feel at ease. The house desserts are among the most creative in Antwerp. Try the Almond Tart with Smoked Bacon Caramel Sauce or one of its many more unusual sweets. The professional staff is always pleasant and help you make your visit memorable. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Eating with Victor Horta |
Hopland 2 Antwerp 2000 Belgium +32 3 232 2815 http://www.grandcafehorta.be |
Grand Café Horta is situated between Rubenshuis and the City Theatre in an exclusive contemporary building. The original steel structure has a very open and inviting ambiance. The cooking is equally extravagant with lots of traditional dishes, beers, fusion salads and pastas and delicious fish courses. This is a chic place with reasonable prices. On the second floor, they have the Art Nouveau room for very big parties and huge gatherings. Review © 2007, Wcities |

In an industrial setting |
Siberiastraat z/n Antwerp, Antwerp 2030 Belgium +32 3 770 8625 http://www.hetpomphuis.be/ |
How about having your meal in an industrial building? The idea certainly doesn't sound appealing but the venue undoubtedly does just that. After an extensive renovation, the restaurant now boasts of one of the most interesting decors in the city. Located on the ground floor of the building, it serves delicious dishes with hints of oriental flavors. The wine list has a fine variety to select from. Choose your table by a large window and enjoy the serene water views as you dine at this unusual venue. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Refined dining |
Leopold De Waelplaats 10 Antwerp, Antwerp 2000 Belgium +32 3 248 5252 http://www.hippodroom.be/ |
This restaurant, nestled among many other eateries, lies across the Royal Museum of Fine Arts. What's with the unusual name? Well, it origins from the former Hippodroom building, which used to be an entertainment center. Interesting works of art accentuate the walls and the decorative lighting plays with it. The romantic getup is set in by soft candlelight on each table. The bar area, an attractive feature by itself, is complemented by the good list of liquors and Belgian beers. The menu lists contemporary cuisine with French flavors. Try the popular dish Scallop Carpaccio with Algae Tartare or the Baked Cod with Gnocci and Fowl Gravy. And do save room for a generous portion of a delicious dessert. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Stylish and tasty |
Vlaamsekaai 17 Antwerp 2000 Belgium +32 3 237 3000 |
Kommilfoo is located on the Vlaamse Kaai, the so-called Flemish Dock. There is, however, no water and no harbor here because the dock was filled up and turned into a market place some 100 years ago. This restaurant with air-conditioning has a classic interior with cream-colored walls and soft yellow table linens. The menu has a rich selection of traditional dishes from France and Belgium with a touch of weird creativity. Try the specialties of the house, such as the fillet of duck and foie gras. It also has several fixed menus that change every few weeks. Review © 2007, Wcities |

LaRiva is located in a building that housed 19th century dockworkers while they were on strike. Now, the restaurant is completely renovated into an attractive modern space with three areas, each with its own distinct feel. They arrange private events with live music and DJs (check the website for more information). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Distinguished resto |
Isabellalei 145 Antwerp 2000 Belgium +32 3 281 3976 |
This small restaurant is in a nice neighborhood just outside the city center. The decor is classical with retro highlights and some high-tech lighting. The dark color scheme makes the interior rather dark, but that may just be why the restaurant is very cozy. The dishes are not so traditional here, and are more in the so-called new style. Lots of fish and pasta dishes à la carte are offered. No fixed menus. The staff is friendly and professional and guide you through the menu if necessary. The place is always very busy and you should book a table in advance. Selected wines are available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

In an old brewery |
Vlaamsekaai 76 Antwerp 2000 Belgium +32 3 238 1240 |
In the south of Antwerp on the Vlaamsekaai you will find this special brasserie, which is located in what used to be a brewery. Inside, in the enormous modern dining area, you will see original copper kettles, which are still used for brewing a "house beer". The strongest beer is Nen Bangelijke (meaning 'What a scream') that has 9.5 per cent alcohol. The joint also offers a wide selection of dishes, some of which are prepared with beer. Try the Blond Beer Soup or the Sea Wolf with Antwerp Blond, you are sure to love them! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Great cakes |
Oude Koornmarkt 18 Antwerp 2000 Belgium +32 3 232 0038 |
This eatery in the old city is considered by the locals to be a little gem of Antwerp and maybe even in the whole of Belgium. The place is rather small, with a large counter and a few tables at the back, in somewhat of a cottage style set up. The owners cook, serve and take full responsibility for the high quality dishes and delicate cakes. They offer mouth-watering tarts, exquisite quiches and superb salads. For 15 years they have been serving customers including the most rich and famous. The service is very smooth and the waiters always remain calm: this restaurant is definitely a no-stress zone. Good price for the family |
Molenstraat 69 Antwerp 2000 Belgium +32 3 216 0066 http://www.sensunik.be/ |
The name of this restaurant means "one-way street" and indeed you have to drive down a long one-way street off Mechelsesteenweg to reach it. But despite the inconvenient location, coming here is well worth it. Kids are given a playroom on the upper level, where they can have their dinner while animated characters entertain them. There are also toys and games and many other surprising distractions for them. Parents can enjoy their meal at the lower level without having to worry about their little ones. This has been a successful eatery for years and offers tasty food at fair prices. It offers a fixed daily menu, a wide range of salads, pastas, mixed grills and special fixed menus for the kids. Salad bar, shop and take-away |
Oude Beurs 12 Antwerp 2000 Belgium +32 3 233 88 45 |
If you walk from the Vleeshuis in the direction of the Grote Markt, you'll probably go down the Oude Beurs, an attractive street in the old part of the city, where you'll find a picturesque salad bar called Sjalot en Schanul (Shallot and Scallion). The Salad menu is pretty varied here. Try one with shrimps and avocados or pasta with tuna—all with fresh herbs of course. You can order to take away or you can also buy fresh vegetables in one part of the shop. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dine with Belgian TV celebrities |
Driekoningenstraat 72 (Berchem) Antwerp 2600 Belgium +32 3 239 3916 |
This restaurant is highly commended by the culinary press and if you want to meet famous stars from Belgian television, then this is the place to be. The Troubadour distinguishes itself by its artistic and fine decoration. Especially the Venetian drawing room, with a maximum capacity of 38 people, is a place to dream away about times gone by. This is a very innovative kitchen with an exceptional level of tastes that can be found in a variety of its select dishes. The Troubadour has a perfectly balanced wine card with vintages from the famous French Châteaux. Chef John Verbeeck is a passionate gourmet. Review © 2007, Wcities |
