Outside the gates of Zoo Atlanta on the grounds of Grant Park stands a stark, white marble structure housing the world's largest oil painting, the Atlanta Cyclorama. Painted in 1885-86, the Cyclorama is a 365-degree mural depicting the Battle of Atlanta, which in 1864 helped doom the South's fate during the American Civil War. A collection of artifacts and historical documents rounds out the museum, but the focus is on the one-of-a-kind centerpiece. Guided tours are available daily. These knowledgeable volunteers are available to share their love of Atlanta with visitors for a small fee, which helps fund the work of the Preservation Center. The Center also organizes walking tours of ten city neighborhoods, which are offered February through November. One of the tours begins at the historic Candler Building, and offers a charming history of the surrounding neighborhood. Waterfalls abound at this beautiful Atlanta park, where a variety of trails lead to many wonderful remote destinations. Trails range in length from one-third of a mile to a full mile, and none are strenuous. Some treks involve crossing creeks, however, so come prepared to get wet if you misstep. The Cochran Shoals Nature Center houses a number of wild animals, including a mountain lion. Take Highway 20 to Fairburn Road (exit 92) and turn left. Turn right at Cochran Mill Road (Highway 70). This ancient site was the largest gathering place of Mississippian Indians between 1000 and 1550 AD. The largest mound is three acres in diameter and 63 feet tall, and is thought to have housed the chief's platform. The five other mounds are much smaller, and served primarily as burial sites. Since its debut in 1990, the annual Georgia Games have been providing an opportunity for athletes of all ages to compete in an Olympic-style format. More than 40 different sports are featured, usually in July, as this event attracts competitors from high schools and colleges all over the state. The Georgia Games are extremely well organized, and are as fun to watch as they are to participate in. The Games represent everything that is good about sport and give everyone the chance to compete. Just east of Atlanta, this 3,200-acre park centers on the world's largest exposed granite mountain. Skylift gondolas whisk visitors 825 feet to the top, where commanding views of the Georgia countryside await them. The north face's 90-by-100-foot bas-relief memorial to Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson is the world's largest. An antebellum plantation, a riverboat, an antique auto museum and a petting zoo are all located within the park, as are camping, dining and lodging accommodations. The hardwood rink with its overhead party lights recalls the flavor of simpler times, and helpful instructors stand ready to assist should your technique be a bit rusty. Skate rental is cheap, but admission varies on Sunday afternoons to Saturday nights. Created mostly with land granted by Colonel Lemuel Grant, the "Father of Atlanta," Grant Park is the oldest surviving park in the city. Its lands were part of the defensive line against Union forces in the Civil War, and the breastworks of Fort Walker remain as evidence of the Confederacy's defeat.
