The hip and happening pizza joint |
2359, Windy Hill Road Southeast Atlanta, GA 30067 United States +1 770 436 4446 http://www.bluemoonpizzaatl.com |
This eatery serves some of the most innovative and fresh pizzas in town. Blue Moon Pizza oozes vibrancy and makes a blatant claim of wanting to remain an illogical pizza joint. Go for the hand-tossed variety or the thin crust ones, they are all good, complete with large portions of fresh and generous toppings. The Greek pizza is quite a crowd-puller here and so are the house made desserts. The blue walls and serene blue lights infuse an enchanting glow. All of this with an open patio, live music, an upbeat bar(with a good stock of martinis) and televised sports. Pizza joints just got better! Review © 2009, Wcities |

This no-nonsense Decatur bar is a throwback to the days when speakeasies were for drinking. Handsome and simple, the Brick Store is comprised, not surprisingly, mostly of brick. The crowd varies, but expect to find at least a spattering of the legal denizens of the Dekalb County Courthouse just across the way. Featuring local and imported draughts, single malt scotches, small batch bourbons and fine wines, you won't be at a loss for drinking options. Funky Art Deco decor spices up this glorified diner, with booths and sassy waitresses to match. The menu covers the basics, but pulls some creative twists. Try the famous homemade potato chips with Maytag bleu cheese dressing, or Atlanta's fanciest meatloaf, comprised of veal and wild mushrooms. A lot goes on at this hippest of Highlands corners, which sits snugly beneath the sidewalk at Highland and Virginia Avenues. Cozy up to the bar with the sleek after-work crowd, then stay late as the locals filter in. Dim lights and exposed stone walls set a romantic, if crowded scene. The rear section doubles as an upscale steakhouse, open for lunch and dinner daily, as well as weekend brunch. Play your cards right, and the folks here will serve you a steak at the bar well into the night. Review © 2009, Wcities |

Get Down in Midtown |
931 Monroe Drive Atlanta, GA 30306 United States +1 404 876 0001 http://www.hoedownsatlanta.com/ |
You can't tell from the facade, but this unassuming tavern next to the Winn-Dixie supermarket hosts Atlanta's wildest country-western party every night. Catering to a predominantly gay clientèle, Hoedown's is pure country. With a long, old-fashioned wooden bar and ample space for line-dancing, this is a saloon right out of the Old West, and can get pretty rowdy as the night progresses. A few appetizers are available, as well as a sandwich menu on Sundays, but other than that, Hoedown's puts its focus on the party, not the food. Review © 2009, Wcities |

257 Peters Street Southwest Castleberry Hill Atlanta, GA 30311 United States +1 404 523 1555 http://www.mbaratlanta.com/ |
One question that haunts every visitor to this joint is the name M Bar. Well the letter M stands for margaritas, martinis and music—the three USPs of this lounge. Of course the hip crowd, the late open hours and the moth-watering pub grub come next. Downs a few drinks as you participate in some banter with your colleagues after work, or revel in the music that is churned out by the hunky DJ. A separate vodka and tequila bar is open to all party animals. Though a little hard to believe, it is true that the spot can be a good option for a date—yes it is romantic and mushy! Located a few blocks from the old City Hall, this traditional corner bar was known as the hub of Atlanta's political scuttlebutt for more than 50 years but is now a homier, neighborhood-type place. The row of cozy booths opposite the room-length bar is great spot to catch a pint and a Braves game. Several dining rooms set off from the bar make the place much more family friendly than in years past, and the kitchen serves up a surprisingly diverse grille menu. The menu offers special seasonal fare, so that your meal is made of the freshest of ingredients. Try the chicken liver fettuccine with marsala wine sauce, which is an all time favorite. Don't forget to end with the yummilicious desserts. Review © 2009, Wcities |

Hot Tunes in Midtown |
1578 Piedmont Road (at Monroe Drive) Atlanta, GA 30324 United States +1 404 875 1522 http://www.smithsoldebar.com/ |
Smith's is reminiscent of the old-time pubs that served double duty as drinking taverns and family gathering spots. The kitchen serves Southern comfort food in the traditional sense, which means mashed potatoes with gravy, ribs, chicken, veggies, fresh bread and decadent desserts. The no-nonsense servers are attentive and friendly, another Southern tradition. Smith's is known for its live music, which takes place later in the evening, often featuring local bands and even big-name rock groups looking for an intimate, friendly venue. This bar can easily be classified into five main areas - the watering hole, the dance floor, dining area, the games room and the Atlanta room. The dining room serves snacks and quality meals late through the night. The poolroom has 5 pool tables, dartboards, foose ball, and video games to keep you entertained, and the bar is well-stacked with drafts, beer, wines, and liquors to keep the spirits high. For private parties and intimate occasions, the preferred area is the Atlanta room. Review © 2009, Wcities |

The small door on Moreland Avenue may not give it away, but this swinging joint is a prime hotspot on the local music scene. Featuring live bands every night, the Star is a longtime favorite for catching rising acts and great neighborhood groups. Wild and a little wacky, the dimly lit ambiance leans a bit toward the psychedelic. When the music is not blaring, the place tones down a bit, but remains one of the most interesting melting-pot watering holes in the city. Review © 2009, Wcities |

Relocating from Colorado to Atlanta in 1997, Sweetwater Brewery has brought a western flavor to the burgeoning Georgia microbrewery scene. As many as six different kinds of beer are brewed under the Sweetwater label at any given time, depending on the season and the progress of new recipes. The company's impressive brewing and bottling facility also offers tours. While most people enjoy the interesting and informative tour, the most popular stop is the last, where guests are invited to partake of a sampling of recent batches. Check website for tour details. Owner-chef Gary Mennie has given this wonderfully vibrant and tantalizing restaurant an appeal that pulls both the young and the not-so-young crowds. An eclectic mix of the old and the new, the decor consists of elevated seating in the centre, luxurious booths, a huge red lighting fixture and an outdoor patio. True to its name, Taurus even has the friendly and efficient staff wearing shirts with bulls printed on them. Apart from soups, salads and sandwiches, snacks like Peekytoe Crab Fritter and Oyster Rockefeller get your appetite raring to go. A range of meat and seafood entrees are said to hit the right spot, more often than not. A vast selection of wines round off the meal. Review © 2009, Wcities |

With Mediterranean and Middle Eastern music in the background, this Greek restaurant makes you shake your belly. Like all parties this one also starts after sunset; by 7p the belly dancers come out; by 10p the party really picks up with the place converting into a nightclub. The drink and wine list is equally exhausting; it's long enough to entice Dionysus back to earth. So if you're looking for a quiet dinner come earlier, but if the idea is to rock, then this restaurant will welcome you with its open Greek heart. Review © 2009, Wcities |

The Brewhouse Cafe distinguishes itself from other local sports bars with its specialty: soccer and rugby. The grub is good, and there's a wide selection of imported beers on tap and in the bottle, but it's the international sports broadcasting that makes the Brewhouse special to many of its patrons. The pub also allows dogs both inside and out on the patio, and if you're not riveted to the live sports action, it's a good place to people-watch. Review © 2009, Wcities |

English Pub Life |
Nationalestraat 16 Atlanta, GA 2000 United States +1 404 233 5633 |
This quiet pub, tucked behind the more famous and crowded Buckhead establishments, offers an Americanized glimpse into English pub culture. Decorated with the requisite plaid carpet and wooden bar as well as several pictures of the Queen, the Arms is a longstanding local hangout in a land of fast bar turnover. Although purists may balk at the abundance of American spirits, there are at least two English ales on tap at all times, along with Guinness, of course. A popular trivia contest is held every Tuesday at 8p. Review © 2009, Wcities |

The Mark bills itself as a "chic hotel bar, without the hotel," and aspires to the same status as designer lounges in New York and Los Angeles. According to both locals and visitors, it succeeds very well. There is no line in the place that isn't sinuous, no lighting that isn't intimate, and no body that isn't fashionably dressed. The happy hour crowd here is well dressed and well heeled, and although the name and decor suggest that this is a tavern, the style here is a little more upscale. A nice menu of salads, sandwiches and appetizers draws a steady flow of shoppers from ritzy Phipps Plaza, while the drinkers generally flock to the patio that overlooks Peachtree Street. This trendy gay club is set right on Ponce, but it sits atop several other shops to command a nice view of the street and the downtown skyline. A square bar takes up much of the interior, and a large piano takes up even more. Ceiling fans and hanging ferns dangle overhead, and a street sign marks the area as "Liberace Lane."
