Southern comfort food with a twist
1514 Monroe Drive
Atlanta, GA 30324
United States
+1 404 885 1000
http://www.mominthekitchen.com
This eclectic eatery serves down home comfort food with a strong Southern influence. The strange Barbie doll and retro decor creates a surreal atmosphere somewhere between '50s diner and small country inn. Specialties include Pork Chops with Apple Fritters, gravy-laden meatloaf, and Grilled Salmon Pot Pie. Meals are reasonable in both proportion and price, unlike the giant tropical drinks (which hold a half gallon). A private room is available upstairs for special parties, along with outdoor dining and priority seating. The respectable beer and wine lists include some unusual selections.

You can expect a well-dressed crowd here around happy hour, but at other times, American is more casual and laidback, a perfect spot for a light bite before catching a movie inside Phipps Plaza. American and Italian are the featured specialties, and the Fettuccine New Orleans comes highly recommended, featuring grilled Cajun chicken with diced peppers and scallions in a spicy Cajun cream sauce, spread over a fine bed of pasta. United States
+1 404 262 7379
http://www.anthonysfinedining.com
The plantation home that houses this distinguished restaurant is not a Buckhead original. The historic structure, which dates to 1797, was disassembled and moved piece by piece to its present address, and now provides a charming antebellum setting for some of Atlanta's finest dining. The formal, multi-room setting proves very popular for wedding receptions and dignified corporate events, while the menu of traditional Southern specialties draws consistent crowds. An award-winning wine list is presented by a very genteel, very Southern wait staff. Full bar service is available.

This recent addition to Roswell is garnering attention for its elegant style and innovative dishes. The contemporary menu is heavily laden with seafood specialties. Araxi also maintains an enormous wine cellar housing more than 350 vintages and 1800 bottles. Though the decision may seem a foreboding task, every wine offers its own special reward for a particular dish on the menu.

Serving the best food in its neighborhood, this low key joint has stood the test of time. The name is rather suggestive of the prevailing decor, both inside and out. A small bar is located in the corner of the simply adorned dining room. Nothing trendy, nothing fancy, the menu is as straightforward as the service. The fried shrimp is among the best in the city, lightly breaded and not too greasy. Other seafood specialties include a salmon and lobster bisque and a rotating variety of grilled and fried fish.

Hanging tough at its original location downtown, the Busy Bee is a hometown favorite for no-nonsense, down-home cooking. The locals outnumber tourists, a telling indicator of the Busy Bee's style. Red faux-leather booths line one wall, opposed by an old-time diner-style counter with red faux-leather-topped stools. No fancy "New Southern" pretenses here, just bona fide Dixie standbys like fried chicken, oxtails, smothered pork chops, fresh fried corn, greens, and candied yams. The marriage of soul food and Southern tradition is a happy one, and it comes pretty cheap, too.

Competing with the big chains, this is a great local steak house offering (you guessed it) great steak at an affordable price. This restaurant is set up like a large Western roadhouse with high ceilings and lots of Western decorations. Although bordering on corny, it still retains that hearty steak house appeal. The steaks are large and expertly prepared. Baked potatoes and salads are available to round out your meal, as well as a few less beefy items. Great beer selections and a full bar are available.

This unusual eatery blends the influences of three cultures to produce one fantastic menu. Not quite a Chinese bistro or Japanese steakhouse, Classic Gourmet is classic American in a melting pot sort of way. If the menu hasn't quite made up its mind, the decor leaves no doubt as to the Oriental leanings. Seafood, chicken, and steak selections are prepared in the customary Chinese, Japanese, and American fashions. For a sampling of all three cultures, take a trip through Classics's diverse buffet, which runs $7 at lunchtime, $11 for dinner.

Some dining establishments are popular for the food, some for entertainment, and some for the good company within. Well, Einstein's has hit all three of these targets since opening in 1992. Perhaps some of the restaurant's appeal comes from the large patio, its proximity to the theater district or the novelty of the Einstein theme. Hal's has quietly earned a reputation as a restaurant with consistently good food and service. Hidden on the dead end side of Old Ivy, Hal's attracts a core of regular customers and is a worthy destination for visitors seeking a local haunt. A well-appointed bar sits to the side of Hal's slightly cramped dining room. Hal's does not have a strictly designated smoking area. American and continental favorites are served quickly and competently. Great steaks are the top sellers, and a few simple seafood items are also popular.

Harold's Barbeque

A longtime favorite for barbecue, this simple down-home pork joint continues to attract the local lunch crowd and families looking for good, inexpensive eats. A classic BBQ shack, Harold's makes no attempt to provide gourmet comfort, but that's probably why the food is so good. The menu is also simple and features the basics. With your barbecue, try the Brunswick stew and the cracklin' cornbread. And of course, sweet tea is the beverage of choice.

With a second location in the Virgin Islands, these folks know something about creating an island setting. The interior is island rich, with dark wood walls, a long bar, and tables arranged for dining or mingling. Outside, 16 tables with umbrellas line the cobble stoned alley, offering great open air dining. Much more restaurant than bar, Hemingway's puts out consistently good food for lunch and dinner. Try the fresh catch sandwich or the authentically prepared Cuban sandwich. Go island with a side order of sweet plantains.

At Houlihan's, the focus is on fun, at least until the food arrives. The restaurant is perhaps a shade more formal than national chain competitors such as Bennigan's and T.G.I.Fridays, but keeps the mood high nonetheless. The centrally-located bar provides a hub around which activity at the warm wooden booths and tables revolves. Great for happy hours, work parties, and large groups. Houlihan's serves up the best of the new American sit-down fast food. Pasta dishes, fajitas, barbecue and salads are all competently prepared and satisfying.

When the shopping grind at Lenox Square takes it out of you, put it back in across the street at Houston's. The low light and dark wood make for a warm environment that's as suitable for families as it is for romantic, steak-loving couples. The brass-appointed bar becomes lively after work and on weekends, and is serviceable by the kitchen for solo dining. Mike's serves everything from Polish sausages to Brunswick stew dogs and slaw dogs, as well as a variety of sandwiches ranging from roast beef to turkey. Try the famous Frito Pie, a combination of Frito's corn chips, cheese and peppers on top of a tamale, or the Killer Onion Rings, which are fried in a Tabasco batter. The sports bar ambiance is highlighted by posters of Elvis and Marilyn Monroe, plus lots of Chicago Bulls paraphernalia.

This high energy eatery is a slightly more laid back version of the downtown location, but still stands for big business steaks and old school style. Formal attire is required in the dining room, which caters to a largely business crowd. Power lunches are the norm amid the traditional, elegant accoutrement of the decor. The steaks are wonderful, known throughout the country as some of the best to be had at any price. A few poultry, fish, and other entrees are available as well. Reservations are essential. There's always a crowd of people milling about the corner of Virginia and Highland on weekend mornings; they're waiting for brunch at Murphy's, a handsome white-and-green house that accepts call-aheads, but not reservations. The charming dining area has been kept roomy, creating a comfortable environment but also resulting in slightly longer waits. This lively spot at the dead center of Buckhead boasts its own brand of Southwestern nouvelle cuisine. The upscale dining room and bar are decorated in a strange sort of refined roadhouse look, while the small patio overlooks a fountain fronting the Peachtree sidewalk. Taos transplant and master chef Kevin Rathburn's specialties include chili-cured rack of lamb, sweet shrimp relleno with golden tomato butter, and grilled chicken tortilla tomato soup. Fresh, hand-crafted beer and a diverse menu are the cornerstones of this relatively new entry onto the local brewpub scene. The Rock Bottom offers a warm, casual atmosphere for a pleasant meal, as well as one of the liveliest happy hours in Buckhead. The menu features hearty American offerings such as burgers and chops with interesting variations, while the beers run the gamut from pales to reds, browns, stouts and specialty ales. The restaurant is well situated to service most of Buckhead's upscale hotels at Piedmont and Peachtree streets.

This Buckhead steakhouse has been named the Best Restaurant in the United States by the Robb Report. 'Where Atlanta' dubbed Ruth's Chris, Atlanta's Most Memorable Meal, and the elegant, clubbish feel of the bar and dining room is part of the reason. High ceilings, dim light, and impeccable service create a decadent dining experience. The beef is expensive and worth it, from the tender filet mignon to the dazzling porterhouse. Great sides and sinfully chocolate desserts come in servings large enough to share, and should also be sampled. Full bar. Located in the chic W Hotel, Savu fashions intriguing fusion dishes that combine Asian flavor with a French style. The result is an exceptional hotel restaurant to which Atlanta's fashionable crowd is beginning to migrate. Connected to the lobby of the hotel, the dining room has an elegantly romantic feel, largely due to the pervasive candlelight. Among the exceptional and original entrees are a spicy calamari salad and the Szechwan lobster pancakes. Savu also offers beautiful, sinfully rich desserts. The bar, predictably, has become a trendy north side hangout.

Twain's Billiards and Tap

This Price is Right
211 East Trinity Place
(Church Street)
Atlanta, GA 30303
United States

This happy Decatur pool hall offers a welcome contrast to the smoky, tough rooms of bygone years. Enjoy a game with friends or just stop by for a couple of beers. The bar selection is pretty standard, though it does feature a great spread of local and national microbrews. Sample some of the typical bar fare or try one of the more uncommon choices such as the vegetarian hamburger. Whether you're hungry or just looking for a game, the young crowd at Twain's will make your trip an enjoyable experience.

Twisted Bar, housed in Midtown, lives up to its name and reputation. Traditional Mexican food is blended well with the flavor of California to create a delectable fare. Pull up a stool at the bar, watch TV or grab a booth for drinks and dinner. The restaurant does not care too much about exaggerated presentations or fancy dish names but prefers to concentrate on food that is tasty and prepared with the freshest ingredients. The atmosphere is funky, accented with fresh colors and lots of beer gear!

Great sandwiches
11417 Haynes Bridge Road
Atlanta, GA 30004
United States
+1 770 752 8082
Uptown Gourmet makes great sandwiches on fresh homemade bread. If you've got business up north of the perimeter, a better lunch spot is tough to find. The dining area is always clean and friendly, a normal deli setting with a few tables and an ordering counter. A patio is also available for dining during the warmer months. The sandwiches can be ordered large or small, and the line cooks are generous with the toppings. A nice array of salads and soups is also available.

+1 404 881 1706
http://www.thevarsity.com/
This local legend is billed as the world's largest drive-in and has been a staple on the Atlanta dining scene since 1928. Countless burgers, fries, shakes and more than two miles of hot dogs are served here every day, along with more Coca-Cola than anywhere else in the world. Dine in your car, seat yourself in one of the many cafeteria-style rooms, or simply order your greasy lunch at the 150-foot-long stainless-steel counter and go. The white-tiled diner theme is a welcome throwback to days when drive-ins ruled the fast food scene.

Like a scene out of TV's 'Happy Days', this cool drive-in hearkens back to the days when folks pulled their cars into a hamburger joint and wound up with a food tray hooked over the window. This smaller version of the legendary downtown location offers all the charm and great food of the original. The menu is basically burgers, hot-dogs, onion rings and deep-fried "chips," or French fries. There's plenty of room inside if in-car dining isn't your thing. Try the frosted orange drink.

This Caribbean-themed eatery will put you in a Jimmy Buffet kind of tropical mood. Beer or rum punch just seems to go down better on a Caribbean holiday, which is the prevailing ambience. Food picks consist of standard island fare, with curries, lots of chicken, and seafood with some unusual seasonings. Try to get a seat outside in fair weather, as the tastes and gentle breezes make it easy to imagine yourself perched by an emerald blue sea.

This comfortable suburban spot offers northsiders a great place to partake in some great American specialties amidst a casual atmosphere. "Upscale tavern chic" is the best way to describe the friendly interior. Families will feel as much at home as the regular business crowd that frequents the restaurant from Alpharetta's corporate offices. Full dinners such as steaks, fish and wonderful pastas headline the menu, but there's also plenty of lighter fare from which to choose. Burgers, wood fired pizza, sandwiches, salads and a nice selection of appetizers are all reasonably priced.

Frequently visited by co-owner Emily Saliers of the famous folk due Indigo Girls, Watershed is quickly gaining a reputation for its fresh and funky menu. Located in a former service station, the space has been carved into an open, roomy dining area and adjacent gourmet shop. The menu changes daily, but always holds a few surprises and favorites. The sandwiches are always great and the gnocchi seems to melt on the tongue. Save room for dessert, because chef Scott Peacock prepares some of the best cakes in the city.

The ornate, mirror-laden dining room at the Waverly is a cut above what you find in most hotel restaurants. Dark wooden walls bathed in low light set the stage for a rather refined dining experience. The menu is perhaps best described as American classic with regional touches.Dinner is a memorable experience, and the wine list is imaginative. Jacket and tie are required in the dining room, but not in the elegant bar.

Wisteria is a lovely neighborhood restaurant in the Inman Park area. The atmosphere is modest-rustic, yet very comfortable. Interior decoration mainly consists of a combination of brick and wood finishes with tables for two aligned across the wall. Wisteria is a great place to take visitors for a lively evening meal. The Menu is American with Southern culinary accents, e.g. their signature dish -- Molasses-Rubbed Pork Tenderloin -- is absolutely delicious. Seafood lovers may try North Atlantic Skate Wing served over stone-ground corn grits. Service is very friendly and efficient. Complementary parking is available. Reservations are strongly recommended on weekends. -Manana Khachidze

A former local DJ known as Youngblood created this interesting eatery years ago, and his cooking career has been as successful as his radio life. Youngblood still serves up some of the best Southern soul food in town in a funky 50s atmosphere. A terrific chef in his own right, Youngblood often takes over the kitchen to oversee the creation of his signature fried chicken. If you can't get a seat in the crowded dining area, grab a seat at the bar and rub lunch elbows with the locals.
