Alon's Bakery and Market |
1394, North Highland Avenue Atlanta, GA 30306 United States +1 404 872-6000 http://www.alons.geomerx.com |
Alon's Bakery is a small café in the popular Virginia/Highland area of Atlanta making artisan breads, European-style pastries and cookies daily. This place is "haute couture" for elegant cakes and "a must" destination for all "sweettooth" visitors of Atlanta. All pastries and cakes are excellent but some are to die for: Chocolate Raspberry Mousse, Frasier (fresh strawberries topped with a pistachio cream with layers of lady's fingers) or the Opera cake. Alon's is a fantastic spot for lunch as well, with tables situated both inside and out, one can enjoy soups and/or made-to-order sandwiches. Finish off the entire experience with an enjoyable coffee and heavenly desert. -Manana Khachidze Review © 2007, Wcities |

Atlanta's Oldest Neighborhood Tavern |
794 North Highland Ave Atlanta, GA 30306 United States +1 404 876 7249 http://www.atkinspark.com/ |
The city's oldest tavern is a great place to sip a cold one, watch the game, or take in a delicious weekend brunch. A favorite with the Emory and young professional crowds, the place really moves most nights, but never loses its laid-back tavern atmosphere. The menu includes Georgia Mountain Trout, Rusty's Creole Jambalaya, as well as a host of other pasta, seafood, steak and vegetarian choices. The bar also has a light late-night menu with appetizers and sandwiches. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Voted "Best Coffee House in Atlanta" by a local magazine, this old bungalow is just the spot to start your day. There is plenty of room inside to sit with your paper on cold mornings, plus several tables outside that give you a chance to enjoy your brew as the busy Highlands shoppers breeze by. In addition, you can also buy coffee beans to take home. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This romantic spot is fashioned in the likeness of a rustic country cottage, and blends right in with the quiet neighborhood it inhabits. The menu includes eclectic European entrees. A predominantly French wine list is highlighted by some rare and unusually expensive offerings, and formal attire is recommended. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Folk art and ice cream |
1054 North Highland Avenue Atlanta, GA 30306 United States +1 404 815 9970 |
This rustic shop in the Highlands displays some of the finest examples of primitive antiques and reproductions the South has to offer. You can also browse (and purchase) the works of well-known regional artists, mostly in the folk art style. Be sure to take a stroll through the store's garden department, where you're bound to find something that you simply must have, from birdhouses and fountains to angels, tire horse swings, whirly-gigs and lovely bunches of fresh flowers. At the very least, there's always the ice cream counter to peruse. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Summer days are long and hot in Atlanta, which makes this Highlands shop very popular. In a neighborhood rich with great bars and restaurants but scarce on fast food, this is one of a very few options for ice cream. Dine in the small parlor or take your treat up to the rooftop deck. Uniquely blended and uniquely named frozen concoctions are the specialty here, with ice cream, yogurt and sorbet options aplenty. Ice cream sandwiches, milk shakes and sundaes are also available. Cameli's walks that difficult line between busy order-out joint and comfortable, classic dining room. Whatever your choice for dinner, however, the end result is fine Italian dining at a great price. The dining room features classic Italian restaurant appointments, right down to the colorful tablecloths. Abstract oil paintings along the walls add that special touch of trendy intimacy. The all-Italian menu features some traditional favorites and great gourmet pizza. Beer and wine are available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Mexican Meals |
1409-D North Highland Avenue Atlanta, GA 30306 United States +1 404 874 1343 |
This is a great find in the north Virginia-Highlands for the serious lover of authentic Mexican. The dining area features cantina decor and tables barely large enough to support the generous platters. Atlanta's extended outdoor season, as well as a burrito as big as a rolled-up newspaper, ensure the back deck is never a lonely place to be. A pair of dueling bars in the front of the restaurant dish out a full line of south-of-the-border brews and frozen concoctions. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Atlanta inherited a national treasure when chef James Wong relocated from New York, and the city has rewarded him well. This enormously-popular spot is well known for authentic Chinese done up in elaborate presentations. Patrons flock from all over the area to this understated Midtown storefront in the Ford Factory building. Daily specials include offerings from all over China, including a memorable Peking Duck. Full bar service is available, and reservations are strongly recommended for weekend dining. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Good Brews and Great Views |
816 North Highland Ave Atlanta, GA 30306 United States +1 404 873 3607 http://www.darkhorseatlanta.com |
The dark wooden walls and dim lights give this place the look and feel of an old traveler's stopover, but the mood is lively and fun. Have a drink at the full island bar inside the front door or settle in the back to feast on anything from nachos to steaks. Better yet, take your party outside. The porch seating climbs up three floors and offers great nighttime views of the skyline. The basement houses a separate, much rowdier bar with live, local bands nightly. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Cross-Cultural Asian Cuisine |

Popular for Asian fusion at shoestring prices, this trendy spot blends elements from the cuisine of many Asian nations to produce a truly unique menu. The noodle soups and mixed Asian pastas are great, or try one of several cabbage wraps or the Chinese scallion pancakes as an appetizer. Don't let the crowd scare you away; the line moves quickly. The cozy interior features tiny tables arranged with little elbowroom. For more space, wait a few minutes for a seat on the elevated patio that looks out over Highland Avenue. This old neighborhood place offers some of Atlanta's best pizza amid the busy shops and friendly taverns of the Highlands. From the storefront, the narrow bar cuts through this historic building, with exposed brick and ceiling fans lending an old-time feel. A surreal Atlanta tradition |
909 Ponce de Leon Ave Atlanta, GA 30306 United States +1 404 873 3088 |
This stark pastel building on Ponce stands out from its more timid neighbors, right on the border between Midtown and the Virginia-Highlands. Stucco and tile has replaced the traditional red-and-white tablecloths, to stunning effect. Ceiling fans spin over the brightly colored tiled dining room tables, while the patio is fitted with ornate, wrought iron chairs. The Vegetarian and meatball-laden specials are popular pizzas, while the calzones are a great choice for lunch. The White Pizza, with mozzarella and ricotta, is famous throughout Atlanta. Beer and wine is available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fontaine's Oyster Bar is located next to the Highland Tap Restaurant, and is very popular with locals and tourists alike. If you are expecting a chivalrous crowd and a well-dressed wait staff, then you will be a little disappointed. This no-fuss joint is a casual hangout, visited by office and college-going people during lunch hours. Evenings are always packed, as it is open till the wee hours of the morning. Try the Peel-n-eat Shrimp and the Jambalaya, prepared with fresh ingredients. You can have a drink at the well-stocked bar on a boys' night out, or plan a romantic date with your lady love on the beautiful patio. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Two Levels of Fun |
1041 North Highland Avenue Atlanta, GA 30306 United States +1 404 892 3648 |
Perhaps the best combination bar/restaurant in the Highlands, this is a reliable spot to begin or end an evening out. A mostly local clientele, including families with small kids, crowds the tables and booths at all hours. Good bar food and a few more substantial American dinners are offered. The bar and a few tables are located downstairs in the deep, narrow storefront, but for more private dining, head for the back loft. The sidewalk patio is shared with neighbors and is a good spot for people-watching. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This simple storefront in the Highlands has created a meeting of cultures, serving dishes from both Thailand and Italy. The restaurant is comprised of one large room that looks out in fishbowl fashion onto Highland Avenue. A handsome bar on the right side invites you to linger for a cocktail. For a less conspicuous seat, ask for a table on the limited deck space in the rear. Although specializing in Italian and Thai dishes, a nice range of contemporary American meals is also offered. Full bar service available. See website for full menu and gift certificate information. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A lot goes on at this hippest of Highlands corners, which sits snugly beneath the sidewalk at Highland and Virginia Avenues. Cozy up to the bar with the sleek after-work crowd, then stay late as the locals filter in. Dim lights and exposed stone walls set a romantic, if crowded scene. The rear section doubles as an upscale steakhouse, open for lunch and dinner daily, as well as weekend brunch. Tavola means "the table" in Italian, a simple name that belies the innovative flair of this elegant restaurant. It is a popular spot for dinner or cocktails, with exposed brick and wooden floors creating an authentic trattoria feel. The covered patio is less crowded, but also less romantic. Italian dishes are prepared in the classic style, perhaps best personified by the veal saltimbocca or the classic torelloni, which is stuffed with smoked mozzarella in a sun-dried tomato-basil pesto cream sauce. An extensive wine list provides many companion options, and you can order by the glass or the bottle. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Greasy Spoons Since 1929 |
1031 Ponce de Leon Ave Atlanta, GA 30306 United States +1 404 875 0276 |
This white-tiled, quintessentially American diner has been in constant operation since 1929, and it serves up a down-home menu 24-hours a day. The long counter in front faces Ponce de Leon Avenue and backs up on the kitchen, where your order will appear hot off the grill. Pick a stool up front or slide into a booth along the sidewalk picture window. The Majestic is known best for its generous breakfast menu, and there's no better place to clog your arteries first thing in the morning. Try the meatloaf plate if you're the adventurous type. Located a few blocks from the old City Hall, this traditional corner bar was known as the hub of Atlanta's political scuttlebutt for more than 50 years but is now a homier, neighborhood-type place. The row of cozy booths opposite the room-length bar is great spot to catch a pint and a Braves game. Several dining rooms set off from the bar make the place much more family friendly than in years past, and the kitchen serves up a surprisingly diverse grille menu. Try the grilled tuna steak with a side of slow-basted black beans. On many a saturday night, Manuel's patrons are treated to the comic stylings of Atlanta's oldest comedy troupe, Laughing Matters Improvisation. Review © 2007, Wcities |

For a quick bite as you make your way down Ponce, stop at this classic neighborhood pizza stand. Order at the long counter that fronts the kitchen, grab your drink and wait at a picnic table outside. The patio is shared with Gumbo A Go-Go next door and is set at a comfortable distance back from the traffic of Ponce. Pizzas and wings are the mainstays here, along with submarine sandwiches and a few other items. Save room for dessert, as Milano offers many varieties of Ben & Jerry's ice cream. No alcohol. There's always a crowd of people milling about the corner of Virginia and Highland on weekend mornings; they're waiting for brunch at Murphy's, a handsome white-and-green house that accepts call-aheads, but not reservations. The charming dining area has been kept roomy, creating a comfortable environment but also resulting in slightly longer waits. Chicken, lamb and vegetable dinner specialties are well prepared, as is "the Big Murphy," an enormous baked potato that's a meal in itself. Murphy's wine tasting is a highlight. From the street, it's hard to tell that this little storefront might be the best place for Middle Eastern food in town. Small and rather spartan, the busy kitchen stirs up a surprising variety of your favorite exotic dishes. A small, loosely decorated inside dining area is greatly expanded during pleasant weather when you can take your lunch outside. Regularly voted as the 'Best Falafel in Atlanta,' the Bistro sticks religiously to its traditional Middle Eastern roots.
