On a quiet suburban corner |
227 Jervois Road Herne Bay Auckland 1001 New Zealand +64 9 376 5550 |
An old villa at the residential end of Jervois Road is home to the Empress Garden, which has been serving great meals to locals and others in the know for more than two decades. While traditional, the décor is light and refreshing--pale green walls contrast with red chinese lanterns and everything is clean and tidy. The menu featuring classic Chinese cuisine is pages long. Special dishes such as Peking Duck need to be ordered in advance. The wine list is short but adequate, or you may bring your own wine. They also serve plenty of green tea. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The owner, Hooi Hing, is a graduate of Les Roches, a Swiss hotel and catering school, and has managed several 5-star hotel restaurants. Exotic, fragrant and aromatic, the menu embraces the cuisine from Bali to Bangkok and India to Indochina. The menu will delight Asian food lovers, from the marinated raw terakihi (fish) in lime jus coated with ginger coconut dressing to Bebek Sumatra boneless roast duck in fragrant green chilli curry. Cool down the palate with a refreshing dessert of lychee sorbet. The Java Room is licensed, with a good selection of mainly New Zealand wines. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The food has a predominantly Northern Thai flavor, specific to the region of Isaan, from where Chef Mana hails. Main courses include Roast duck red curry with grapes, tomato & coconut. Mutiara is a cozy spot with a friendly atmosphere, and something of a rarity in Auckland--a Malaysian restaurant. Bright, colorful tablecloths and traditional wall hangings decorate the interior. The wooden and chrome are a nod towards contemporary urban style, and blend with the overall design. For an entree, try the Lucky Money Bags. Vegetable specialties include Gado Gado, noodles, and rice dishes. Mutiara is licensed. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Quick and cheap, Otto Woo serves healthy chopstick-ready "wok food" to be eaten at clean, communal tables or taken away. Service is always fast and there is usually a seat at the bar for those with time to sit down. The servings are good value and generously sized. The Little Otto is a perfect snack, with noodles or rice, wonton, spring roll and rice ball. Other tempting dishes are Prawn Tempura with shrimp, spinach and lemon on noodles, and Cashew Chicken with leek and mandarin on udon noodles. Freshly squeezed juices are served.
