Empress Garden

An old villa at the residential end of Jervois Road is home to the Empress Garden, which has been serving great meals to locals and others in the know for more than two decades. While traditional, the décor is light and refreshing--pale green walls contrast with red chinese lanterns and everything is clean and tidy. The menu featuring classic Chinese cuisine is pages long. Special dishes such as Peking Duck need to be ordered in advance. The wine list is short but adequate, or you may bring your own wine. They also serve plenty of green tea.

+64 (0)9 373 4917 As the best food court in the city for cheap and authentic Asian food, Food Alley boasts 15 kitchens sharing a common dining area. It is a bit like eating in a converted car park--but you do not come here for the scenery. Food from all over Asia is on offer. Zap is recommended, with its beautifully presented food from Northeast Thailand; try the larb chicken and rice. Claypot Roast, offering roast duck and pork Chinese style, with rice and soup is also excellent. A fully licensed bar also makes delicious fresh juices.

http://www.ottowoo.com Quick and cheap, Otto Woo serves healthy chopstick-ready "wok food" to be eaten at clean, communal tables or taken away. Service is always fast and there is usually a seat at the bar for those with time to sit down. The servings are good value and generously sized. The Little Otto is a perfect snack, with noodles or rice, wonton, spring roll and rice ball. Other tempting dishes are Prawn Tempura with shrimp, spinach and lemon on noodles, and Cashew Chicken with leek and mandarin on udon noodles. Freshly squeezed juices are served.
