Enjoy spectacular views of Rangitoto Island from the Takapuna branch of Daikoku--the Japanese God who provides delicious food. The restaurant is popular for business lunches, and group and family dinners. The chef entertains while cooking at your table. There is Teppan steak, Teppan scallops, and the Seafood Combination dish has crayfish, scallops and squid. Daikoku is fully licensed and also offers al fresco dining.

+64 (0)9 373 4917 As the best food court in the city for cheap and authentic Asian food, Food Alley boasts 15 kitchens sharing a common dining area. It is a bit like eating in a converted car park--but you do not come here for the scenery. Food from all over Asia is on offer. Zap is recommended, with its beautifully presented food from Northeast Thailand; try the larb chicken and rice. Claypot Roast, offering roast duck and pork Chinese style, with rice and soup is also excellent. A fully licensed bar also makes delicious fresh juices.

The sake list is more than extensive and several varieties are house favourites—make sure you book a taxi home!

Featuring a traditional wooden interior, traditional sake boxes and baskets provide an atmospheric backdrop to the well-designed tables and stools. It draws a mix of Japanese businesspeople and students as well as visitors and local diners. You could almost imagine yourself in a hideaway in Kyoto or Ginza at Tanuki. The handsome bar is well stocked with a wide variety of sake labels. A full selection of delectable sushi and sashimi provide an excellent counterbalance to the wine.

You get a basic Dom Buri skewers of grilled and barbecued meat and vegetables (Yakitori), meat and vegetables dipped in egg and breadcrumbs then cooked in soya oil (Kushiage), can be added. There is a small wine list and lots of Japanese beer and sake on offer, ensuring an interesting and fun night out.
