A Turkish treasure |
434 Khyber Pass Road Newmarket Auckland 1001 New Zealand +64 (0)9 522 0448 |
Anatolia presents delicious authentic Turkish cuisine, and on Friday and Saturday nights, belly dancers display their expertise and their midriff's for your entertainment. Warm tones and walls hung with traditional memorabilia of Turkey provide an atmosphere, which is both intimate and relaxing. Start with a meze platter, to sample a little bit of everything, including hummus, and dolma accompanied by pita bread, follow with a kebab, and finish with deliciously sweet baklava and wickedly strong coffee. Anatolia is fully licensed and you may bring your own wine. Review © 2007, Wcities |

After undergoing a stunning renovation, Andiamo's interior in black and taupe tones now oozes sophistication. An impressive bar and lounge area is welcoming and the restaurant very comfortably appointed. For dinner try the Seared Rare Tuna with Cress and Crab Mayonnaise, followed by Lamb Shanks or Penne Pasta with Roasted Vegetables and Feta Cream. Supper is served from 11p when you can have "breakfast" or even an Eye Fillet Steak. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Set right on the footpath overlooking St Heliers beach, Annabelles is a traditional café serving coffee, tea and light lunches during the day and Mediterranean-style meals at night. Crowded on weekends and warm summer evenings, Annabelles personifies the laid-back attitude of St Heliers. The service is quick and the staff is friendly. You get to choose from a variety of seafood; a hint of spices from the east makes the cuisine all the more tempting. Review © 2007, Wcities |

With an emphasis on Turkish and Mediterranean styles, Bar Comida has one of the more distinctive menus in the area. Named after a Picasso painting (La Comida Frugal), Bar Comida features a full selection of wines, fresh fire-oven baked breads, Mediterranean style tapas and an interesting selection of meals. Try the lamb pizza or the Dukkah (spicy bread dip). A fireplace and warm surroundings are nice in the colder winter months and full-length windows allow for ventilation and outdoor dining during summer. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Here you can make believe you are in Bodrum, Turkey. Brick walls, Turkish carpets, bare wooden tables, flickering candles and comfy cushions make the interior warm and inviting. They even have traditional belly dancing on Friday and Saturday nights. The freshness and quality of the meals are excellent. Try the Mezze Platter of hummus, tabbouleh, pita bread, beetroot salad, tuna salad and yoghurt dip, or the staple but succulent Doner Kebab. The wine and beverage list is extensive. A good range of cigars is kept behind the bar. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Estasi entices with its menu--a fusion of Italian/Mediterranean-inspired Pacific Rim cuisine. Brick work and wooden tables and chairs give warmth and character to the interior. Tables outside give a good view of the interesting Ponsonby Road foot traffic. The menu is extensive (even catering to children). There are many options in each category from pasta, risotto and gnocchi, to mouth-watering salads. They are open for lunch and dinner daily and weekend brunch. There is a fully stocked bar near the street--again, ideal for watching the passers-by. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Named for its proximity to the Auckland Trotting Club Raceway at Alexandra Park, Gee Gee's Bar and Brasserie is well known to locals and frequent race-goers for its good food, atmosphere and attentive service. Trotting regalia adorns the front bar area. The restaurant, at the rear, offers a children's menu and even high chairs. The owner, Ivan Rudez, is of Croatian origin, and the meals are often Mediterranean in flavour and presentation, and always generous in proportion. Hearty steaks feature on the menu alongside pizzas and seafood dishes. The wine list has plenty of variety. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Freydo and his team have been busily producing genuine, tasty Italian food for a regular and enthusiastic crowd for years now. The décor is informal and rustic in style, solid timber tables and chairs lend character. You can also sit at pavement tables under the green-striped awning. Try the Braciole Ubriache pork chops with brandy, Marsala and fennel seed; or the Pollo Rosso chicken with tomatoes and a touch of cream. All mains are served with potatoes. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A genuine Italian experience awaits you at La Luna, with well prepared Italian food, a well designed but relaxed environment, gentle music and a competent staff. The menu makes a mouth-watering read--from an antipasto platter, to steamed green-lipped mussels served in a chilli tomato sauce followed by pasta dishes, such as tortellini al prosciutto--tortellini with cheese, Parma ham, mushrooms and cream. Limon Cafe & Bar serves up an interesting mix of Mediterranean dishes, as well as some great coffee and desserts. Their tapas platters are the perfect accompaniment to an early evening chardonnay, whilst their seafood meals are pretty hard to beat. Be sure to stop by on a Wednesday or Sunday to enjoy Argentinean Tango nights. Very reasonably priced and with a beautiful view of the harbor, Cafe Limon is a pleasant alternative to the bustle of inner city dining and is worth the walk down to the wharf. This is not the most chic part of town, but there's plenty of local style within Occam. The staff is friendly and efficient and the atmosphere is welcoming. Pavement seating is available, though large windows bring the outside "in" during the summer. A (gas) log fire keeps the place cosy in winter. A large blackboard menu offers daily specials around a Mediterranean theme, including vegetarian options. A satisfying all-day breakfast is served until 6pm. The tea and coffee are good, and Occam is also fully licensed with a separate raised bar area, complete with backgammon board and magazines. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Prego has style! It is undoubtedly one of the best quality venues in Ponsonby, both for the excellent food and friendly competent service. Elegant in design and style, it achieves a sophisticated but unpretentious air. Terracotta floors extend through to the front courtyard, which is shaded by a large tree and awning. The excellent menu is Italian based—pizza, pasta, grills, salads as well as a rotisserie in the evening. Prego is fully licensed. Review © 2007, Wcities |

With a prime location on the main "café row" of Mission Bay, Riva more than holds its own with the competition. From the beautifully carved hanging sign to the rich desserts and fine coffees, Riva is a class act. Old World ambiance with posters of the Dalmatian coast and Carpathian Alps on the wall and Slavic accents in the kitchen translate into old-fashioned attentive service and mouth-watering food, (including a children's menu). Come in for coffee or for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Riva is licensed. Review © 2007, Wcities |
