Opulent theatre and movie house |
Corner Wellesley and Queen Streets Auckland Auckland 1001 New Zealand +64 9 307 5075 http://www.civictheatre.co.nz |
After a million dollar restoration, the grandeur and opulence of the spectacular Civic features many facets not seen by the public for many years. The theater was built in 1929 with Indian motifs plus stars on the auditorium ceiling reflecting the Southern Hemisphere night sky. There is a grand staircase to the Winter Garden, originally a Continental-style tea garden that was a wartime cabaret. The international-standard lyric theater itself seats 2350 people. Unfortunately the interior is not open purely for viewing - but it is well worth buying a movie ticket so as to get to see it. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This is New Zealand's only licensed men's fashion store--yes, this means they can, and do, serve alcohol. As you may expect, the standards of quality and service are very high. It is a large store, full of such items as suits, shirts, ties, trousers, belts, cuff links and tiepins. Since 1930 they have been helping to make Auckland men look pretty good, and that tradition looks set to continue for a while yet. Despite all of this, their prices remain very reasonable--especially on suits. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Most New Zealanders think of the Louis Vuitton Cup when they hear this name. However, as well as the competition for this sailing trophy, there are also a couple of the international designer stores in Auckland. This one has plenty of leather goods--handbags, shoes, travel bags and luggage, wallets, purses and belts. They do not carry the clothing range, but for leather goods with worldwide recognition ;this is the place. Some items are in eye-catching colors. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Auckland's newest Day Spa, the Spa de Serville, calls itself an example of 'sanctuary by the sea' - as indeed it is. It can be found overlooking the Waitemata Harbour on Auckland's Viaduct Basin - the feeling of tranquility within, a stark contrast to the America's Cup madness just outside its doors in recent months. Affiliated with the Servilles chain of salons, they offer a full range of spa and beauty treatments, along with a fully staffed salon and car valet service. Some prices are at the higher end of the market, but the treatments on offer are divine and often well worth the outlay. An example is the Total Zen day package, which includes a four hand massage, body wrap, manicure and pedicure, eyelash tint, blow dry and makeup, amongst other delights. The more basic treatments are competitively priced, as are hair cuts and colors. For a truly pampering experience, call for an appointment now. Review © 2007, Wcities |
