Enjoy a drink high above Prince's Wharf in this stylish and desirable bar. Popular with Auckland's nightclub set, it also has one of the best views the city has to offer, as well as some fantastic cocktails and other beverages. Bar snacks such as antipasto platters are served. DJs are in residence on Friday and Saturday nights. Entry is gained via a lift on the ground floor. The doormen can be ruthless and a high standard of dress is required. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Finding Aotearoa Soul |
536 Queen Street Auckland 1034 New Zealand +64 9 377 3711 |
This funky music lounge on Queen's Street specialises in Aotearoa Soul. Khuja means 'melting pot' in Arabic. And the place kind of reflects that philosophy. The decor is stylish, with soft candlelight and comfy couches; drinks are mostly Brazilian and the music ranges from jazz and soul to hip-hop. Review © 2007, Wcities |

With a twist! |
167 Ponsonby Road Ponsonby Auckland 1001 New Zealand +64 (0)9 360 7167 |
Lime is relaxed and friendly and you are likely to hear old Dean Martin tracks playing on the sound system. Space is at a premium, so busy nights are not recommended for claustrophobics! The cramped conditions, however, make it a great place for chatting to people and the clientele is largely made up of friendly local people. The cocktails are superb and the wine and beer list is vast. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Pig out |
204 Quay Street, The America's Cup Village Viaduct Basin, PO Box 106 191 Auckland 1001 New Zealand +64 9 366 6491 http://www.loadedhog.co.nz/ |
With its prime location right on Viaduct Harbour, the Loaded Hog could serve pigswill and still draw a decent crowd. However, the food and beer are excellent and as a result the place is always busy. It has giant paintings of famous New Zealanders, and antique farm implements on the walls. The Loaded Hog is comfortable and never too smoky. The beer is brewed on-site. Hog Gold Lager, Hog Draft, Hog Wheat and the especially tasty Hog Dark Ale are all available on tap. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Join the locals in this unpretentious British bar |
Corner Queen and Wellesley Streets Auckland 1001 New Zealand +64 (0)9 373 3684 http://www.hellhq.co.nz/londonbar |
This typical British-influenced Kiwi pub is right in the middle of the city, located upstairs across the road from the Civic Theatre. The pub features live music, mainly jazz, from Thursday through to Sunday evenings, with local bands and artists. This traditional pub draws a mixed clientele, especially on jazz nights. It is a good place to meet the locals drinking their Lion Red--a rather sweet New Zealand beer. There is a well-stocked bar with several beers on tap. Pub food and snacks are available for around NZD5 Review © 2007, Wcities |

Food Lovers' Delight |
23 Ponsonby Road Ponsonby Auckland 1034 New Zealand +64 9 360 6262 |
You will find fantastic food here, matched by an excellent service. The fare at Rocco's has a Spanish bent to it and one can tell that a lot of thought has gone into the preparation. The wine list is great and you have a variety to choose from. Cocktails are just as good but a little on the steeper side. Review © 2007, Wcities |

African rhythm |
322 Karangahape Rd Auckland 1001 New Zealand +64 (0)9 308 9667 |
The only African-style nightclub in Auckland, Roots has been pumping out African, Reggae, and Rhythm and Blues sounds since 1998. The club features resident DJs and also offers live cabaret entertainment. It is a fully licensed venue with a well-stocked bar and free bar snacks on Friday and Saturday. The music beats out a pulsing African rhythm all night long during weekends for a mainly local crowd looking to relax and have a great time. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Watering hole for beer lovers |
61 Albert Street Corner of Wyndam & Albert Streets Auckland 1001 New Zealand +64 9 373 5396 http://www.shakespearehotel.co... |
Drawing an eclectic crowd including staff from the nearby New Zealand Herald offices, the Shakespeare is loud, casual and a whole lot of fun. A pioneer of the boutique-brewery industry, the Shakespeare brews 10 of its own beers on the premises, and serves from 3 different bars. This is a traditional English-style pub with unpretentious decor. Downstairs there is a bar, a few booths and some tables. The function room is upstairs with a lovely terrace for outdoor dining and drinking. The décor is unpretentious. The beer is the attraction, with regular brews and other specialties as per the whim of the brewer, beer drinking is nowhere better. Their ales are especially tasty. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Seriously cool bar |
Viaduct Quay 204 Quay Street Auckland 1001 New Zealand +64 (0)9 377 7811 |
Spy bar is one of the coolest, and hardest to find, spots at Viaduct Harbour. (The entrance is off Quay Street.) Chris, the owner, is also the proprietor of the famous SPQR. Spy is super cool, from its neon-lit bar to its Brasell and Ojala-designed seating area. Dark and stylish, it is one of the spots to be seen in at the Viaduct. The clientele is mostly made up of slick professional people. Spy specialises in champagne cocktails, which may set you back a little, but the mix is perfect and generous in proportion Review © 2007, Wcities |

Under the motorway viaduct |
416 Broadway Newmarket Auckland 1001 New Zealand +64 (0)9 522 4443 |
Named after the Southern Motorway overbridge, which soars overhead, (rather than Viaduct Harbour, Viaduct is a solid working class wine and beer bar with poker machines, pool tables and a garden bar. A pleasant wooden bar is the centrepiece and the garden bar has a mellow brick wall. Function rooms can be booked, and complimentary DJs are available for parties. A variety of well-prepared pub food is served including an all-day breakfast. Review © 2007, Wcities |
