Austin, TX 78704
United States

Have you always wanted to enjoy a cold beer at the movies? You can here. In fact, you will find a nice selection of both domestic and imported beers, as well as wines and champagnes. The libations help you wash down the tasty pizzas, chicken wings or cheese- and salsa-smothered nachos as you take in a flick. Children at least 6 years of age can accompany their parents; patrons must ordinarily be at least 18 to attend on their own. The theater features mostly independent films. See website for showtimes, ticketing info, menus, special event calendar, merchandise and more.

Hot Spot On Town Lake
920 West Riverside Drive
Austin, TX 78712

There was a time when music from local musicians was free, and great Southern food was BBQ ed in the park. But those days are gone; the park is now used for concerts and firework celebrations on the Fourth of July. Located near the picturesque Town Lake and across from the old Palmer Auditorium, the venue is usually busy during summer. The name of Auditorium Shores is derived from its location along the shore of Town Lake. You will also find the Town Lake Hike, the Bike Trail, a gazebo and the Stevie Ray Vaughan statue.

Beauty Bar takes its name from the '60s hair salon knick-knacks that come into play within each of its dozen or so locations, but the moniker might as well refer to the chain's simple methodology for success. By cultivating a particularly girlish (and thus locally rare) atmosphere, it manages to bring in the prettiest twenty-somethings in town, who in turn bring in everyone else to the extent that, by the end of the night, the place is packed in a way rarely seen elsewhere in Austin. When the resident DJ isn't spinning early Michael Jackson, music comes care of some of the city's more up-and-coming rock bands.

Broken Spoke is a western honky-tonk established in 1964 and rapidly became an Austin favorite for country-western dancing. The "Spoke" is true country in a real dance hall with a real wood-plank floor. Watch cowboys and locals two-step the night away to live bands from around Texas. This dance hall provides an excellent atmosphere for those just learning to two-step or die-hard country fans driving in from the ranch for the weekend. Practice the Polka, Texas Two-Step or the Chicken, and be sure to try the Cotton-Eyed Joe. There is also a restaurant that serves traditional country food like chicken fried steak.

Built in 1867 as the home of the Texas General Land Office, this building is the oldest standing government building in the state. Along with a listing on the National Register of Historic Places, it has quite a bit of history. From 1887 to 1982, a draftsman named William Sidney Porter, better known today as the short story author O. Henry, rented a space upstairs. Some of the author's greatest short stories were inspired by his experiences here. The second floor of the building houses the O. Henry Nook, where visitors can view his comical land tract maps. The building also houses the State Travel Information Center, which provides guided tours. A Texas-style gift shop is located on the first floor.

Come enjoy country western music in a railroad relic. This venue, although slightly outside of downtown, provides an excellent opportunity to dance and watch older country western pros strut their stuff. The old Texas feel and the relaxing atmosphere make a great team with cold beer and great music.

The Dry Creek Saloon is one of Austin's older and less well-known watering holes. It is a beer-only bar and they don't take credit cards so remember to stop at an ATM before you arrive. Upstairs on the deck, patrons can catch some afternoon sun while, on occasion, enjoying some live music. While a serious dive bar at first glance, Dry Creek has become a favorite for those looking for a laid back happy-hour experience. -Nicholas Van Zandt

One of the first streets surveyed in Austin, Sixth was originally known as Pecan Street. During the day, shops, restaurants and historic buildings are the main attraction, but by night, the street becomes festive with live music, shows and special events. On Friday and Saturday nights, the blocks are closed to automobile traffic for an all-out street party. Stop by for a beer or a show, or just enjoy watching the eclectic nightlife of Austin. After the bars close at 2a, this can be a dangerous place to hang out alone.

If Austin-area jazz lovers feel ignored, it is justified; the local music scene, multi-faceted as it may be, has always neglected their genre of choice. However, what the region lacks in quantity, the Elephant Room more than makes up for in quality. It has been deemed as one of the ten finest venues in the country by none other than Wynton Marsalis (and subsequently honored by a unanimous resolution of the Texas Senate for having earned the jazz legend's admiration). The appeal stems largely from the club's unceasing lineup of regional favorites, touring greats, and, once in a while, plain ol' jam sessions consisting of anyone who cares to take the stage.

One part vaudeville and one part stinging political/social satire, this place has amused and delighted its guests, as well as the pedestrians who pass by its front-stage windows and observe its goings-on, since the late 1970s. A troupe of multi-talented performers write, act, sing and dance their way across a broad comedic map that pokes fun at our elected officials, celebrity icons, and regular citizens, and the material is constantly being updated. It is not all for laughs, though; a magical act comes on a couple of times per show to startle and captivate your senses. This is a true downtown institution. General admission is $20, pre-paid for reserved seating is $25. Students, seniors and military receive $18 general admission tickets on Thursday and Friday nights only.

Evangeline's Cafe gets its name from a Longfellow poem and you're forgiven if you're surprised. True, the stuffed animals and neon beer signs don't say Longfellow but diners don't come here expecting a romantic setting for two either. It's for the food and the live music. The kitchen at Evangeline's holds its own in the cajun and creole department, the signature dishes being the gumbo and the crawfish, both with ample meat and cheese. The cafe features new acts every night and the dancing is sure to help you burn some calories. Ignore the no frills impression that you get when you first walk into Evangeline's Cafe and you're guaranteed to have a good time.

If city parking is like rain on your downtown drinking parade, look no further than the Mean Eyed Cat on West 5th Street. The one-room, no-cover dive bar has an urban feel, but boasts a parking lot that would put Costco to shame. Built to honor the late great Johnny Cash, the Mean Eyed Cat has a crowded back patio and plenty of man-in-black collectibles. The Mean Eyed stage, featuring live music almost every night of the week, is popular with patrons of all ages. Order a shot at the bar to go down, down, down into a burning ring of fire.

The Mesa Ranch could've been a hunter's lodge and you wouldn't have known the difference. Hats and lassos hang casually around the restaurant and you smell leather in the air. Pick a bar stool to be served a stiff drink, head out to the patio and you'll be served a traditional southwestern ranch meal. Expect steaks, seafood, chicken and game cooked over mesquite. The Mesa Ranch specialties are the Nopalitos, cactus soaked in tequila brine and grilled poblano. They don't come much more rustic than this. The live music is southern, but unlike the usual honky tonk.

Austin's Top of the Marc was a well-known and loved club, above the ever-popular Katz's Deli, that served the harder drinks. Then suddenly, it changed its look and name practically overnight. There's a great stage for swing, jazz and rockabilly bands of all sizes to play on, with a dance floor perfect for large groups. One half of the bar is a patio to sit out and enjoy a warm Austin night. The inside of the bar is dark, with black walls and a grey, stone floor. The dress code seems to be a step above casual, but it's Austin, so really, anything goes. Domestic and imported beer is available. Try a margarita from the machine or enjoy Happy Hour, which starts at 5p.

This auditorium has a 300-seat capacity and fills a gap in the local arts scene for a smaller, elegant venue for music, dance and theatre performances. A little bit of the Great White Way can be found deep in the heart of Texas. Like the movie studio which shares its name, this theater is grandiose and ambitious with 1,300 seats available to host an estimated 160,000 people a year. The calendar features both visiting and local stage productions of musicals and dramatic plays, one-person acts, orchestral performances, children's shows, revivals of great old movies and (because this is Austin) the occasional visiting live-music act. A horn of plenty for theater, music and entertainment fans.

Austin has a long-running history with this particular movie. As the second city to release the show in 1976, it has had a continuous run of over 25 years. At the Alamo Drathouse Cinema, every Saturday night brings a costumed cast to perform live with the film. This cult classic only gets better when the audience participation segments arise. Rice, toast, toilet paper and other sundries are sold as props for the patrons to throw at appropriate moments. If you forget to bring your bag of tricks, these props can be purchased in the lobby for USD2. Casual attire is fine, but a wild fashion statement is certainly encouraged. Admission is USD5.

This Austin theater ensemble only produces three or four shows in a year, but the performances are notable for inspiring local social and political debates. It is also hard to forget the gritty casualness of the warehouse space venue. The theater's marketing director says she does not want people to only observe art, but "to sit in it, drink it, smoke it, read it in the newspaper, check the weather report for it and turn around and tell the person behind them" about it. Ticket prices vary but are generally below $15; designated pay-what-you-wish nights are a more frugal alternative. Call for show times and ticket prices, and make reservations early as the limited seating (60-120 seats, depending on the seating configuration) fills fast with college students, high tech professionals and university professors.

This unique art gallery focuses on visionary folk artists of the American South. Featured artists have included self-taught painter Purvis Young, mud painter Jimmy Lee Sudduth, New Orleans artist Suzie Millions, recycled aluminum artist Slim Sirnes and Sultan Rogers. Many of the eclectic artists shown here tend to work in isolation, creating from a place of intense drive and passion. If you are not in the market for a large painting, a variety of handmade gifts (found-object photo frames and more) are also offered. Secure online ordering is also available.

This theater organization goes back to 1933, when it was originally incorporated as the Austin Civic Theater. The name was changed in the 1970s to honor Zachary Scott, an Austin-reared actor who enjoyed a successful Hollywood film career. In 1993, the theater was recognized by its selection to participate in the National Endowment for the Arts Advancement Program. The theater has grown by building two stages, a costume shop, classroom and rehearsal studio and expanding the box office, and now hosts some of the best performances in Austin. Past productions include Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, The Rocky Horror Show, The Flaming Idiots, and Tapestry: The Music of Carole King. The theater also offers children productions and a performing arts school for kids, teens and adults.

Austin's largest park, Zilker Park, houses Zilker Hillside Theater, a beautiful outdoor theater. During the summer, catch free musicals, concerts and "Shakespeare in the Park". Large crowds often line the grassy hills with blankets. During the rest of the year, enjoy a variety of performances (call ahead for seasonal schedules). Bring a picnic lunch, or perhaps just some wine and cheese for a snack and watch the stars come out, in the sky and onstage. Admission is free for most events.
