Ultra Hip In The Warehouse District
219, West 4th Street
Austin, TX 78701
United States
+1 512 474 2194
http://www.219west.com/
219 West is a posh downtown bar with Euro-Manhattan flair, sharp taste buds and a keen eye for interior design. The restaurant/bar opens weekdays for lunch to serve American tapas, open faced sandwiches, soups, salads and mini burgers. After five, 219 West turns down the lights and turns up the music to offer moderately priced cocktails and appetizers. Pick your meal based on the alcohol with which it's paired – Spicy Cheese Fries on The Beer Menu, Grilled Asparagus with Lump Crab on The Martini Menu, Turkey Fajitas on The Tequila Menu, etc. You won't go hungry…or thirsty…at 219 West.

For lovers of seafood, the search ends right here. Freshwater fish and shellfish from all over the world is available, undoubtedly fresh and cooked in traditional home-style recipes. You have a choice of sauces and you can even select the method in which you want your meal to be cooked. The wine selection is limited but local favorites are available. At 7, it's dining in a democratic way, where your inputs count right from the pan to the plate. Bon Appetit!

The bar downstairs helps make the wait for a seat a little more relaxing and the VIP room upstairs is perfect for a great view of the stage. Serving as a rare hipster oasis in an area that's otherwise uniformly rustic (a restaurant specializing in chicken giblets sits nearby), Barfly's brings in the scenesters by way of youthful camaraderie, a revered, genre-bending jukebox, and some of the most genial bartenders for miles around. Inside, the bar is dark, dank, and loud, but all in a good way, whereas the lower backyard area - accessible by staircase and dotted with picnic tables - is better equipped for mingling among strangers. And though the available beer selection does cover all the bases, this is by and large a liquor bar. -Barrett Brown

Austin, TX 78701

+1 512 391 1943
http://www.beautybar.com/
Beauty Bar takes its name from the '60s hair salon knick-knacks that come into play within each of its dozen or so locations, but the moniker might as well refer to the chain's simple methodology for success. By cultivating a particularly girlish (and thus locally rare) atmosphere, it manages to bring in the prettiest twenty-somethings in town, who in turn bring in everyone else to the extent that, by the end of the night, the place is packed in a way rarely seen elsewhere in Austin. When the resident DJ isn't spinning early Michael Jackson, music comes care of some of the city's more up-and-coming rock bands.

Billy's on Burnet is your around the corner friendly neighborhood beer and burger hangout. A place to kick back, let your hair down and sip the local brews which go great with the chicken wings and fries. That doesn't mean that the food here is worth a pass. Billy's on Burnet are partial to burgers, with the Ends and the Schults being named after a local band and their lead singer(no clue about Reuben the sandwich). The daily lunch specials have regular names like meatballs and meatloaf, but standing out is The Vegetarian. Amongst the fans, the football freaks and the kind who love their laptop, even those standing out blend in well. That's Billy's for you.

+1 512 499 0093
Back in 2001, Sixth Street's most poorly-lit dive got a boost of publicity when the Bush twins were nailed for flashing fake IDs on the premises. Cheers hardly needed it, having already been known among locals as one of the area's most reliable purveyor of cheap well drinks, and thus a prime destination for those bargain-hunting downtown revelers whose wallets can't keep up with their youthful exuberance. Beyond mere bargains, though, Cheers is a pretty admirable option for those who dig loud Top 40 tunes, multi-ingredient shots, and cozy, dimly-lit quarters. It's also a pretty popular place to dance, this being quite an accomplishment for a bar that doesn't actually have a dance floor.

Founded in the 1950s, Cisco is an Austin institution. This Tex-Mex eatery has served its famous breakfast migas to the who's who. The clientele may have changed but the recipe hasn't. Migas, meaning 'crumbs' in Spanish, is made from eggs, cheese, vegetables and tortillas with black beans, chorizo and avocado chile varieties. Many a egg-hater has been converted by Cisco's migas. Cisco is also a bar, and the Bloody Mary is best had to nurse a hangover, not something you'd want to begin your day with. Migas, Fajitas and Toasted Biscuits, that's all you really need to know about Cisco.

Upstairs on the deck, patrons can catch some afternoon sun while, on occasion, enjoying some live music. While a serious dive bar at first glance, Dry Creek has become a favorite for those looking for a laid back happy-hour experience. -Nicholas Van Zandt

East 6th Street

Entertainment district
E 6th St
Austin, TX 78701

+1 512 478 0098 (Austin Convention & Visitors Bureau)
One of the first streets surveyed in Austin, Sixth was originally known as Pecan Street. During the day, shops, restaurants and historic buildings are the main attraction, but by night, the street becomes festive with live music, shows and special events. On Friday and Saturday nights, the blocks are closed to automobile traffic for an all-out street party. Stop by for a beer or a show, or just enjoy watching the eclectic nightlife of Austin. After the bars close at 2a, this can be a dangerous place to hang out alone.

If Austin-area jazz lovers feel ignored, it is justified; the local music scene, multi-faceted as it may be, has always neglected their genre of choice. However, what the region lacks in quantity, the Elephant Room more than makes up for in quality. It has been deemed as one of the ten finest venues in the country by none other than Wynton Marsalis (and subsequently honored by a unanimous resolution of the Texas Senate for having earned the jazz legend's admiration). The appeal stems largely from the club's unceasing lineup of regional favorites, touring greats, and, once in a while, plain ol' jam sessions consisting of anyone who cares to take the stage.

One of Austin's most crowded bars on the weekends. Fado pronounced (Fuh-DOH) translates to "long ago" in Celtic. The bar contains everything from Celtic designs to polished wood blocks and glass cabinets. If you can find a table grab it and watch the crowd meander around the bar, which is centered in the middle, or head outside to the small patio with its own bar and enjoy a Guinness. Handicapped parking is available behind the pub, in the alley.

With its little stage having played host to some big names over the decades, Hole in the Wall has long been regarded as one of the city's most storied venues; today, it mostly serves as a launching pad for local up-and-comers ranging in size and genre from 9-piece bluegrass bands to individual singer-songwriters. And although the nature of the crowd itself is subject to similarly sudden shifts (this often being a function of the performing schedule), the bar's proximity to UT brings in a steady flow of students and associated youngsters, most of whom come in for pitchers of Shiner and Lone Star. -Barrett Brown

No other bar in recent memory has managed to so monopolize the patronage of Austin's tattoos-and-piercings crowd than has Jackalope, which caters to the unsubtle sensibilities of its otherwise neglected customer base by way of Reagan-era punk rock on the stereo, tragi-comic b-movies on the TVs, and velvet paintings of topless women on the walls. Aside from serving as Sixth Street's most prominent de facto refugee camp for Black Flag fans, Jackalope is otherwise known for its burgers, regarded by many denizens of the downtown area as the best in the neighborhood – and the Wednesday two-for-one burger deals make these the best bargains in the city.

Live music and a full service bar are only the beginning of the amenities offered at this establishment. This place is where one goes to see and be seen. Prices reflect the pocketbooks that walk through the door. Part of the draw is the ambiance, the other is the selection. The wines from around the world and scotch that can only be found in Scotland are favorites of the regulars.

Opened in 1866, this bar has become a mecca for every Texas governor and quite a number of other people. This is Texas's oldest beer garden; it now provides an extensive menu of traditional bratwurst and sauerkraut as well as barbecue favorites. As is tradition, the bar is a favorite during, before and after the University of Texas Longhorn games. Even if there is not a game, this is still one of the best places to sit back and enjoy a cold beer.

The Spider House, located close to UT, is an unusual establishment open from breakfast until late night. Largely populated by students in search of coffee drinks, light food and solitude by day, this quiet spot gets decidedly more upbeat at night when beer and wine are the more common fare. This is one of the best known and best loved places in town to meet with friends, watch sports, have some drinks and eat down-home cooking. From Lamar Boulevard, you cannot miss the sign advertising 'air conditioning'. Designed in 1916 and modeled after a German pub, it operated as a grocery store until the end of World War I. From the Great Depression on, it has operated as a restaurant and bar. The environment is quite casual and often bustling with activity. The full bar frequently offers drink specials. This Sixth Street bar has a new take on the library: books are not things you read, they are things you look at. Some might smirk, but it's amazing how the spectacle of well-stocked shelves can promote conversation and appeal to one's higher sensibilities. The crowd mostly consists of college kids, but mature personalities sometimes appreciate the ironic juxtaposition of decorator books and, on the second floor, pool and air hockey. The DJ starts the evening with Top-40 and progresses into dance music.

Within the downtown drinking dichotomy of upscale sleek versus casually informal, Whiskey Bar makes its scene in the middle of the road, striking a happy medium between the two schools of thought by way of an interior that's darkly handsome and an atmosphere that's refreshingly easygoing. On Thursday evenings, such easygoingness descends into happy anarchy when the sudden availability of dollar wells brings in hordes of youngish, post-collegiate types, (including customers from the adjacent nightclubs who pop in for a cheap drink before returning), with customers slowly migrating into the back area for one of the most terribly retro dance scenes to be found in Austin.
