Visitors often think they will only find a plethora of Tex-Mex and barbecue restaurants in Austin. While those abound, you will also find a good selection of Japanese, Middle Eastern, Thai, Italian and vegetarian restaurants. Of course, that is only a sample of the diversity of food this town has to offer.

Austinites love to be comfortable and breathe fresh air; only some of the finer dining establishments enforce a dress code. This is a clean-air city, so most restaurants are completely smoke-free; if there happens to be a smoking section, it is usually outside. When inside the city limits, you will not be asked 'smoking or non-smoking?' but if you venture to the outskirts of town, most restaurants do have designated smoking sections.

Downtown

If you are downtown, try Manuel's for fine Mexican food or The Clay Pit for a contemporary Indian dining experience. If sushi is what you're craving, you will find Kyoto, not far from the Capitol on Congress Avenue, offering Japanese food and a variety of sushi options (the broccoli rolls are amazing!). Hickory Street Bar and Grill is a popular downtown destination for its outdoor patio dining, extensive salad selection and weekend brunches. Stop by the Elephant Room for drinks and a variety of live jazz music, located below Kyoto in a smoky basement. For a more upscale drinking atmosphere try Speakeasy, offering swing dance lessons and musical standards from the 30s and 40s, along with original live music. Visitors and locals alike seem to enjoy the view of downtown from the rooftop deck. For more dancing and drinks, The Forum attracts a mature, gay clientele.

Clarksville District

Not too far from downtown is the Clarksville District, filled with upscale restaurants, vegetarian establishments, bistros, bakeries and more. Castle Hill Caf¨¦ offers a rotating menu of worldly gourmet dishes. Jeffrey's is popular among the upscale dinning crowd for its culinary panache. West Lynn Cafe is completely vegetarian, offering a chic atmosphere, a good wine list and a selection of international menu items. Visit Sweetish Hill Bakery for a variety of sandwiches, homemade soups, salads and pastries. Or, for an old-fashioned drugstore experience, stop by Nau Enfield Drug for a hamburger and a malt shake. With a booming take-out business, Pok-e-Jo's Smokehouse serves mesquite-smoked and barbecued meats, including pork, beef, sausage, pork loin, ribs, chicken and turkey.

South Austin

South Austin is home to Barton Springs Road, which houses a row of restaurants spanning several blocks. Romeo's offers Italian cuisine in a casual romantic setting. Indoor and outdoor seating is available at Shady Grove, serving hamburgers, Frito Pie, chili and a Hippie Sandwich for vegetarians. Chuy's has become somewhat of an Austin institution when it comes to Tex-Mex food. The colorful atmosphere offers an entertaining option for families or out of town guests. On South Congress, Guero's Taco Bar offers a Tex-Mex/Mexican dining experience and an occasional celebrity spotting. Threadgill's has taken back the spot where Armadillo World Headquarters was located back in the 1960s, offering diner-style entr¨¦e options such as chicken-fried steak and meatloaf. Jovita's, located on South First Street, has played host to country music's Don Walser and offers tasty Tex-Mex food.

Warehouse District

The Warehouse District offers several upscale options, as well as casual, laid-back eateries. Malaga's Wine and Tapas Bar showcases an extensive wine menu and serves tapas with a Spanish flair. The Mezzaluna name is famous for its Los Angeles counterpart, but here it's known for three-course Italian meals and grappas. Sullivan's serves Hollywood stars and politicos top-quality steak with an air of confidence. If you're looking for a more casual dinning spot, try Spaghetti Warehouse, offering steaks and pasta dishes. Bitter End B-Side Lounge & Tap Room serves an array of appetizers along with English-style beers. If you're looking for an Irish pub, look no further than Fado. You'll often find Gaelic football on the television and a menu filled with Irish-inspired appetizers. For a mellow pub experience, stop by The Gingerman, where you can sip on a beer in the couch-filled bar area. Need a cup of coffee? Head to Ruta Maya Coffee Company, Austin's original coffeehouse, brewing coffee produced in Latin America and offering poetry readings and occasional live music. For retro dancing try Polly Esther's, where you can dance upstairs with the 1970s tunes and "Saturday Night Fever" dance floor, or head downstairs for the 1980s DJ and dungeon-like dance floor. Oilcan Harry's large bar and dance floor play host to Austin's diverse gay community, although the straight set can also often be found dancing the night away.

Hyde Park

Not too far from the downtown area lies the neighborhood of Hyde Park, boasting a small cluster of wonderful places to dine, drink and grab your morning cup of coffee. Quack's 43rd Street Bakery offers a good selection of baked goods and a welcoming atmosphere in which to enjoy your cup of tea or coffee. For an exquisite dessert and liquor date indulge in Dolce Vita Gelato and Espresso Bar. Mother's Cafe and Garden offers vegetarian, lowfat and vegan menu items in a casual environment. Sit inside and enjoy the music, or head out to the peaceful patio, with its small fishpond and lush greenery. Hyde Park Bar & Grill is a bit more upscale in d¨¦cor, but is famous for its Texas take on battered fries served the European way. Asti, with its modern design, is the newest addition to this area of Hyde Park. Specializing in dishes from Northern Italy, it offers delicious and creative desserts and upscale service.

Located in the heart of Hyde Park, this classy Italian restaurant will dazzle your taste buds. The decor is modern with contemporary features. Large windows allow light to shine in and give warmth to the space. It is upscale, clean and comfortable, with dimmed lighting in the evening. Start with the Oven Roasted Mussels spiced with white wine, tomato and garlic. Or try the Semolina Fried Calamari, served with its own special sauce. The restaurant offers a selection of pizzas including a White Pizza with truffle oil mozzarella, fontina and provolone cheese with fried sage leaves. Another favorite is the Grilled Eggplant Pizza with fontina & oregano. Main dishes include several pasta and meat selections.

The menu at Castle Hill Cafe defies categorization at this eclectic spot. Asian, Southwestern, Caribbean and European cuisines are blended to create unusual dishes that stimulate your sense of adventure as well as your palate. Lucinda's Basil Cheese Torta is an old favorite, and so is the Sausage and Duck Gumbo. For something new and different, try the Firecracker Shrimp Fettuccini. Some entrees are offered without meat for vegetarians. The menu changes every few weeks as the chefs try out new creations. New menu items are updated on the restaurant's Web site.

Tex-Mex

Austin, TX 78704-1037
United States
+1 512 474 4452
http://www.chuys.com/
Equal parts Tex-Mex restaurant and Elvis Presley shrine, this place combines south-of-the-border dining with a Graceland atmosphere, all for a well-affordable price. The wait staff, friendly and helpful, have been voted as the fastest in town by 'Austin Chronicle' readers. Given the competition, it is no small accomplishment that this is commonly considered the best Tex-Mex restaurant in town. The Elvis homage, oddly enough, works. Hubcaps and images of the rock icon set the stage for a dining experience that is pleasant and casual. The menu features a variety of Mexican dishes (the house special, an overstuffed chicken-and-green-chile confection called a Chuychanga, is especially recommended), steaks and burgers, and features a selection of cold beers and mixed drinks to help wash down the hearty meals. Other branches are found at 10520 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, TX 78753 (+1 512 836 3218) and at 11680 Research Boulevard, Austin, TX 78759 (+1 512 342 0011).

Wander through the residential neighborhood behind the busy shops and see some of Austin's most fantastic historical homes. If you are looking for an area that shows off a little bit of every part of Austin's eclectic style, this neighborhood is perfect. You will also find many restaurants to dine in when you take a break from all of the shopping. For many years, this beautiful neighborhood was considered the outskirts of the city. As one of Austin's most important streets, Congress Avenue's entire district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The buildings that frame the street are full of distinctive beauty. The oldest documented building is the Robinson-Rosner Building at 504 Congress (1856). Starting at the Capitol, the street continues south, passing fabulous little shops and eateries. Stop in at Hickory Street for a quick lunch, check out The State Theater or Paramount Theater to see what fantastic production is going on in the evening, or wander into Star bucks for coffee and treats.

One of Austin's most crowded bars on the weekends. Fado pronounced (Fuh-DOH) translates to "long ago" in Celtic. The bar contains everything from Celtic designs to polished wood blocks and glass cabinets. If you can find a table grab it and watch the crowd meander around the bar, which is centered in the middle, or head outside to the small patio with its own bar and enjoy a Guinness. Handicapped parking is available behind the pub, in the alley.

This is a perennial Austin favorite. Some come for the battered fries served with pepper-and-onion-spiked mayonnaise; others for the Chicken-fried Steak with its crispy exterior topped with luscious cream gravy. Everyone has a favorite here. But it is not just the reliably tasty food that attracts folks; it is the laid-back, friendly atmosphere, the people-watching and the late hours. Grilled Fish and salads are on the menu, along with the heartier Chicken-fried Steak and tasty, acclaimed burgers. You may be too full for dessert, although you will be missing out, if you skip it.

This Clarksville restaurant, opened in 1975, manages to stay on Austin's dining forefront because of the innovative cuisine created by chef David Garrido. Begin with one of his signature appetizers, perhaps Oysters on Yucca Root Chips with Habanero-Honey Aioli, follow with a Latin-American inspired entree such as Lamb with Orange Flan and Guajillo Mole, and top it off with a Lemon Cajeta Ice Box Cake. The menu is imaginative, the execution perfect, the service professional and the atmosphere comfortably elegant.

A sushi bar provides counter seating for those who want to watch the chefs do their work, transforming fresh seafood and other ingredients into sushi, sashimi, yakitori and kushiyaki. Alongside the bar, there is Western-style table service. But in a separate dining room, you can go completely traditional and sit on tatami mats at low tables. Either way, the food is fresh and authentic. Try the kushiyaki (skewered, charcoal-broiled meat and vegetables) as an accompaniment to your sushi, or get a seafood platter. And do not miss the light, crispy tempura.

With all the black leather, neon and jazz here, one might be suspicious. Is this a trendy Mexican joint where the food takes a back seat to the slick atmosphere? The answer is a resounding "no". One bite of the Chile Relleno en Nogada is the proof; tender Pork Picadillo studded with raisins and stuffed into a roasted poblano pepper, then sauced with walnut cream. Or try the Enchiladas, Gorditas and Flautas; all make excellent choices. Sunday brunch, with live jazz, is a winner, but dinner and happy hour are the real standout events. The second location is on Jollyville Road.

Vegetarian food may not have the Texas pedigree of barbecued ribs or tacos al carbon, but at Mother's Cafe and Garden at Hyde Park, it is as toothsome as any native cuisine. Besides, this is as vegetarian a town as Texas can boast, so sampling spinach lasagna or even tofu barbecue is an essential part of the Austin experience. The menu runs the gamut from butter-and-cheese-laden dishes to skinnier choices, such as brown rice and vegetables. Such an accommodating list of dishes is an indication of the laid-back, cozy atmosphere here, where everyone is welcome, and everyone leaves satisfied.

One of the best patios ever created is reason enough to stop by, and the consistently tasty, crowd-pleasing food is a great bonus. Happy hour is offered Monday through Friday 4pm to 7p. A menu standard is the Hippie Sandwich, a concoction of sautéed vegetables, cheese and a sub-style roll. Add a chicken breast and you have got the Hippie Chick. The slogan states that "everything is bigger in Texas," and if you look at our Capitol, the phrase rings true. Standing a stately 309 feet and modeled after the nation's Capitol in Washington D.C., this is the nation's tallest. Designed by architect Elijah E. Myers and constructed of red granite, the Capitol took more than seven years to complete. It was finished in 1888, at a total cost of more than three million dollars, an extravagant price even by today's standards. The perfectly landscaped grounds reflect the languid pace of life under the Texas sun, inviting you for a quiet stroll or a lazy day under a tree. Tours: Daily except Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Day. Allow 30-45 minutes for the tour.

Neon beer signs and vintage clocks line the walls of this Austin institution, a gas station-turned-restaurant that also offers up live music. If comfort food is your pleasure, this is the right place, and if you like your vegetables, you will be in heaven. Whatever the entree, seconds on vegetables come free. Pork roast and fried chicken are great, but the chicken-fried steak is not to be missed. The San Antonio Squash will please even those who turn up their noses at the vegetable. And of course, the mashed potatoes and black-eyed peas are heavenly. Rich, crumbly cornbread comes free, but white-flour rolls are extra (and worth it).

Heralded as sporting the hottest dance club in Austin, go to Vicci for Vegas-themed trendy, wall-to-wall action. Although the line is often long, it's worth the wait. Vicci boasts 5 bars in 10,000 square feet, a VIP area and the Di Lusso Lounge below. The drinks can be a bit pricey, and the staff have a reputation for being "curt", but if you want to dance and be seen in the Warehouse District's busiest spot, look no further.
