Ultra Hip In The Warehouse District |
219, West 4th Street Austin, TX 78701 United States +1 512 474 2194 http://www.219west.com/ |
219 West is a posh downtown bar with Euro-Manhattan flair, sharp taste buds and a keen eye for interior design. The restaurant/bar opens weekdays for lunch to serve American tapas, open faced sandwiches, soups, salads and mini burgers. After five, 219 West turns down the lights and turns up the music to offer moderately priced cocktails and appetizers. Pick your meal based on the alcohol with which it's paired – Spicy Cheese Fries on The Beer Menu, Grilled Asparagus with Lump Crab on The Martini Menu, Turkey Fajitas on The Tequila Menu, etc. You won't go hungry…or thirsty…at 219 West. For lovers of seafood, the search ends right here. Freshwater fish and shellfish from all over the world is available, undoubtedly fresh and cooked in traditional home-style recipes. You have a choice of sauces and you can even select the method in which you want your meal to be cooked. The wine selection is limited but local favorites are available. At 7, it's dining in a democratic way, where your inputs count right from the pan to the plate. Bon Appetit! Review © 2007, Wcities |

As one of Austin's favorite live music venues, this club holds around 3000 people. If that sounds like it is too large to get the intimate feel of a band, think again. The bar downstairs helps make the wait for a seat a little more relaxing and the VIP room upstairs is perfect for a great view of the stage. Everyone from Lenny Kravitz to Eric Clapton has performed on this stage. If you are looking for a location for a corporate event or fund-raiser, they do offer their facilities for private parties. Come For The Cute Clientele |
617 East 7th Street Austin, TX 78701 United States +1 512 391 1943 http://www.beautybar.com/ |
Beauty Bar takes its name from the '60s hair salon knick-knacks that come into play within each of its dozen or so locations, but the moniker might as well refer to the chain's simple methodology for success. By cultivating a particularly girlish (and thus locally rare) atmosphere, it manages to bring in the prettiest twenty-somethings in town, who in turn bring in everyone else to the extent that, by the end of the night, the place is packed in a way rarely seen elsewhere in Austin. When the resident DJ isn't spinning early Michael Jackson, music comes care of some of the city's more up-and-coming rock bands. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A local favorite, this bar has been relocated for the fourth time in its history. The building was moved during a midnight trek to its current home at 2nd Ave and Brazos. Construction continues and the bar is scheduled to re-open Labor Day weekend. Regardless of location, it is a great stop before heading out on the town or just for sitting outside on a beautiful evening. Where Everybody Knows You're Broke |
416, East Sixth Street Austin, TX 78701 United States +1 512 499 0093 |
Back in 2001, Sixth Street's most poorly-lit dive got a boost of publicity when the Bush twins were nailed for flashing fake IDs on the premises. Cheers hardly needed it, having already been known among locals as one of the area's most reliable purveyor of cheap well drinks, and thus a prime destination for those bargain-hunting downtown revelers whose wallets can't keep up with their youthful exuberance. Beyond mere bargains, though, Cheers is a pretty admirable option for those who dig loud Top 40 tunes, multi-ingredient shots, and cozy, dimly-lit quarters. It's also a pretty popular place to dance, this being quite an accomplishment for a bar that doesn't actually have a dance floor. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Breakfast bar |
1511 East Sixth Street Austin, TX 78702-3305 United States +1 512 478 2420 |
Founded in the 1950s, Cisco is an Austin institution. This Tex-Mex eatery has served its famous breakfast migas to the who's who. The clientele may have changed but the recipe hasn't. Migas, meaning 'crumbs' in Spanish, is made from eggs, cheese, vegetables and tortillas with black beans, chorizo and avocado chile varieties. Many a egg-hater has been converted by Cisco's migas. Cisco is also a bar, and the Bloody Mary is best had to nurse a hangover, not something you'd want to begin your day with. Migas, Fajitas and Toasted Biscuits, that's all you really need to know about Cisco. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Funky, New York-style club |
900 Red River St Austin, TX 78701 United States +1 512 457 0900 |
With both an indoor and an outdoor bar, this is a great choice to truly hang out. The chairs nearly envelop you, and the low red light and funky New York-style music add to the great ambiance. Venturing outside you will find a natural limestone cliff that keeps away most of the loud noises from the street and neighboring bars. This is one of the few places where everyone gets heard without a lot of shouting. On warm nights you will often find live bands performing on a stage built below the limestone cliffs, entertaining the crowds that gather to enjoy this outdoor space. Review © 2007, Wcities |

No matter your style, you won't be disappointed at Cru, A Wine Bar. This small chain is a great addition to Austin's lively 2nd Street District. An alluring al fresco sidewalk patio draws crowds for wine flights and sharing plates, while the breezy French doors lure parties inside for a sit-down dinner. Cru pours over 50 wines by the glass and has hundreds of high-dollar bottles waiting on the wine racks to be uncorked. Their menu is contemporary cuisine and pays particular attention to food from France, Asia, and the Wine Country. Try a $10-$15 wine flight as you people-watch or splurge on their poached salmon and a $75 bottle of Patz & Hall chardonnay. -Sarah Murray Review © 2007, Wcities |

Located next to Deep Eddy Pool on Lake Austin Blvd, Deep Eddy Cabaret is certainly off the beaten path for most of Austin's people. There is a strange, surreal feel here, like it has been untouched by time for years on end. You are always sure to have a memorable experience here. The regular crowd is eclectic and very friendly. There are a couple of pool tables in this intimate spot and a fabulous jukebox with old country, soul and rock music. Prices also feel out of date. Drinks (beer and wine) are incredibly inexpensive. 315 Congress Avenue Austin, TX 78701 United States +1 512 473-2279 http://www.natespace.com/eleph... |
If Austin-area jazz lovers feel ignored, it is justified; the local music scene, multi-faceted as it may be, has always neglected their genre of choice. However, what the region lacks in quantity, the Elephant Room more than makes up for in quality. It has been deemed as one of the ten finest venues in the country by none other than Wynton Marsalis (and subsequently honored by a unanimous resolution of the Texas Senate for having earned the jazz legend's admiration). The appeal stems largely from the club's unceasing lineup of regional favorites, touring greats, and, once in a while, plain ol' jam sessions consisting of anyone who cares to take the stage. No other bar in recent memory has managed to so monopolize the patronage of Austin's tattoos-and-piercings crowd than has Jackalope, which caters to the unsubtle sensibilities of its otherwise neglected customer base by way of Reagan-era punk rock on the stereo, tragi-comic b-movies on the TVs, and velvet paintings of topless women on the walls. Aside from serving as Sixth Street's most prominent de facto refugee camp for Black Flag fans, Jackalope is otherwise known for its burgers, regarded by many denizens of the downtown area as the best in the neighborhood – and the Wednesday two-for-one burger deals make these the best bargains in the city. This bar provides multi-level entertainment. The ground floor offers live cover-band music; passers-by can look in and see people dancing to the hits. If dancing is not your thing, sneak next door for a beer in the adjoining beer hall, or head upstairs to the more-than-ample patio overlooking the Sixth street crowd. If city parking is like rain on your downtown drinking parade, look no further than the Mean Eyed Cat on West 5th Street. The one-room, no-cover dive bar has an urban feel, but boasts a parking lot that would put Costco to shame. Built to honor the late great Johnny Cash, the Mean Eyed Cat has a crowded back patio and plenty of man-in-black collectibles. The Mean Eyed stage, featuring live music almost every night of the week, is popular with patrons of all ages. Order a shot at the bar to go down, down, down into a burning ring of fire. Jazz/swing/rockabilly club |
618 W 6th St Austin, TX 78701 United States +1 512 479 8848 http://www.momosclub.com |
Austin's Top of the Marc was a well-known and loved club, above the ever-popular Katz's Deli, that served the harder drinks. Then suddenly, it changed its look and name practically overnight. There's a great stage for swing, jazz and rockabilly bands of all sizes to play on, with a dance floor perfect for large groups. One half of the bar is a patio to sit out and enjoy a warm Austin night. The inside of the bar is dark, with black walls and a grey, stone floor. The dress code seems to be a step above casual, but it's Austin, so really, anything goes. Domestic and imported beer is available. Try a margarita from the machine or enjoy Happy Hour, which starts at 5p. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The low-key sign and hidden door make this spot an easy one to miss, but the atmosphere it offers is worth seeking out. Local DJs spin records on occasion, with every Wednesday night offering a bit of British pop music. This is one of the best known and best loved places in town to meet with friends, watch sports, have some drinks and eat down-home cooking. From Lamar Boulevard, you cannot miss the sign advertising 'air conditioning'. Designed in 1916 and modeled after a German pub, it operated as a grocery store until the end of World War I. This Sixth Street bar has a new take on the library: books are not things you read, they are things you look at. Some might smirk, but it's amazing how the spectacle of well-stocked shelves can promote conversation and appeal to one's higher sensibilities. Watering Hole Straddles Genres |
303, West Fifth Street Austin, TX 78701 United States +1 512 481 8599 |
Within the downtown drinking dichotomy of upscale sleek versus casually informal, Whiskey Bar makes its scene in the middle of the road, striking a happy medium between the two schools of thought by way of an interior that's darkly handsome and an atmosphere that's refreshingly easygoing. On Thursday evenings, such easygoingness descends into happy anarchy when the sudden availability of dollar wells brings in hordes of youngish, post-collegiate types, (including customers from the adjacent nightclubs who pop in for a cheap drink before returning), with customers slowly migrating into the back area for one of the most terribly retro dance scenes to be found in Austin.
