Movies, Food & Beer |
1120 S. Lamar Boulevard Austin, TX 78704 United States +1 512 476 1320 http://www.drafthouse.com |
Have you always wanted to enjoy a cold beer at the movies? You can here. In fact, you will find a nice selection of both domestic and imported beers, as well as wines and champagnes. The libations help you wash down the tasty pizzas, chicken wings or cheese- and salsa-smothered nachos as you take in a flick. Children at least 6 years of age can accompany their parents; patrons must ordinarily be at least 18 to attend on their own. The theater features mostly independent films. See website for showtimes, ticketing info, menus, special event calendar, merchandise and more. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Come For The Cute Clientele |
617 East 7th Street Austin, TX 78701 United States +1 512 391 1943 http://www.beautybar.com/ |
Beauty Bar takes its name from the '60s hair salon knick-knacks that come into play within each of its dozen or so locations, but the moniker might as well refer to the chain's simple methodology for success. By cultivating a particularly girlish (and thus locally rare) atmosphere, it manages to bring in the prettiest twenty-somethings in town, who in turn bring in everyone else to the extent that, by the end of the night, the place is packed in a way rarely seen elsewhere in Austin. When the resident DJ isn't spinning early Michael Jackson, music comes care of some of the city's more up-and-coming rock bands. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Johnny Cash Bar |

If city parking is like rain on your downtown drinking parade, look no further than the Mean Eyed Cat on West 5th Street. The one-room, no-cover dive bar has an urban feel, but boasts a parking lot that would put Costco to shame. Built to honor the late great Johnny Cash, the Mean Eyed Cat has a crowded back patio and plenty of man-in-black collectibles. The Mean Eyed stage, featuring live music almost every night of the week, is popular with patrons of all ages. Order a shot at the bar to go down, down, down into a burning ring of fire. Upscale dance club |
611 Red River St Austin, TX 78701 United States +1 512 472 4272 |
This hot spot has been voted best dance club and best new nightclub by the Austin Nightclub and Bar Association. An in-house DJ spins records throughout the week as the music pumps out into the street, enticing patrons to step inside. The large interior is elegant with chandeliers and dark, polished wood everywhere. It caters to a dressier crowd than most downtown bars. The full bar specializes in all versions of the martini, from classic to creative, and offers frequent drink specials. Review © 2007, Wcities |

High energy, dark |
318 E 5th St Austin, TX 78741 United States +1 512 477 1641 |
A bright-red ball of fire with the club's name posted in the core of the inferno stands out like a sore thumb through the dark alley between Fifth and Sixth streets. That is where you enter this dark dance club, often crowded with young, energetic college kids. Wednesday night is High Energy House night, with DJ's spinning tracks in battles over who has the best breaks and trance grooves. Thursday night features a live, local rock band. Ages eighteen and over are allowed on both nights. Retro night lands on any given Friday and can often be crowded. There are pool tables to play on while listening to the impressive sound system. Watering Hole Straddles Genres |
303, West Fifth Street Austin, TX 78701 United States +1 512 481 8599 |
Within the downtown drinking dichotomy of upscale sleek versus casually informal, Whiskey Bar makes its scene in the middle of the road, striking a happy medium between the two schools of thought by way of an interior that's darkly handsome and an atmosphere that's refreshingly easygoing. On Thursday evenings, such easygoingness descends into happy anarchy when the sudden availability of dollar wells brings in hordes of youngish, post-collegiate types, (including customers from the adjacent nightclubs who pop in for a cheap drink before returning), with customers slowly migrating into the back area for one of the most terribly retro dance scenes to be found in Austin.
