219 West

Ultra Hip In The Warehouse District
219, West 4th Street
Austin, TX 78701
United States
+1 512 474 2194
http://www.219west.com/
219 West is a posh downtown bar with Euro-Manhattan flair, sharp taste buds and a keen eye for interior design. The restaurant/bar opens weekdays for lunch to serve American tapas, open faced sandwiches, soups, salads and mini burgers. After five, 219 West turns down the lights and turns up the music to offer moderately priced cocktails and appetizers. Pick your meal based on the alcohol with which it's paired – Spicy Cheese Fries on The Beer Menu, Grilled Asparagus with Lump Crab on The Martini Menu, Turkey Fajitas on The Tequila Menu, etc. You won't go hungry…or thirsty…at 219 West.

As one of Austin's favorite live music venues, this club holds around 3000 people. If that sounds like it is too large to get the intimate feel of a band, think again. The bar downstairs helps make the wait for a seat a little more relaxing and the VIP room upstairs is perfect for a great view of the stage. Everyone from Lenny Kravitz to Eric Clapton has performed on this stage. If you are looking for a location for a corporate event or fund-raiser, they do offer their facilities for private parties.

Come For The Cute Clientele
617 East 7th Street
Austin, TX 78701
United States
+1 512 391 1943
http://www.beautybar.com/
Beauty Bar takes its name from the '60s hair salon knick-knacks that come into play within each of its dozen or so locations, but the moniker might as well refer to the chain's simple methodology for success. By cultivating a particularly girlish (and thus locally rare) atmosphere, it manages to bring in the prettiest twenty-somethings in town, who in turn bring in everyone else to the extent that, by the end of the night, the place is packed in a way rarely seen elsewhere in Austin. When the resident DJ isn't spinning early Michael Jackson, music comes care of some of the city's more up-and-coming rock bands.

Cheers Shot Bar

Where Everybody Knows You're Broke
416, East Sixth Street
Austin, TX 78701
United States
+1 512 499 0093
Back in 2001, Sixth Street's most poorly-lit dive got a boost of publicity when the Bush twins were nailed for flashing fake IDs on the premises. Cheers hardly needed it, having already been known among locals as one of the area's most reliable purveyor of cheap well drinks, and thus a prime destination for those bargain-hunting downtown revelers whose wallets can't keep up with their youthful exuberance. Beyond mere bargains, though, Cheers is a pretty admirable option for those who dig loud Top 40 tunes, multi-ingredient shots, and cozy, dimly-lit quarters. It's also a pretty popular place to dance, this being quite an accomplishment for a bar that doesn't actually have a dance floor.

With both an indoor and an outdoor bar, this is a great choice to truly hang out. The chairs nearly envelop you, and the low red light and funky New York-style music add to the great ambiance. Venturing outside you will find a natural limestone cliff that keeps away most of the loud noises from the street and neighboring bars. This is one of the few places where everyone gets heard without a lot of shouting. On warm nights you will often find live bands performing on a stage built below the limestone cliffs, entertaining the crowds that gather to enjoy this outdoor space.

+1 512 473-2279
http://www.natespace.com/eleph...
If Austin-area jazz lovers feel ignored, it is justified; the local music scene, multi-faceted as it may be, has always neglected their genre of choice. However, what the region lacks in quantity, the Elephant Room more than makes up for in quality. It has been deemed as one of the ten finest venues in the country by none other than Wynton Marsalis (and subsequently honored by a unanimous resolution of the Texas Senate for having earned the jazz legend's admiration). The appeal stems largely from the club's unceasing lineup of regional favorites, touring greats, and, once in a while, plain ol' jam sessions consisting of anyone who cares to take the stage.

No other bar in recent memory has managed to so monopolize the patronage of Austin's tattoos-and-piercings crowd than has Jackalope, which caters to the unsubtle sensibilities of its otherwise neglected customer base by way of Reagan-era punk rock on the stereo, tragi-comic b-movies on the TVs, and velvet paintings of topless women on the walls. Aside from serving as Sixth Street's most prominent de facto refugee camp for Black Flag fans, Jackalope is otherwise known for its burgers, regarded by many denizens of the downtown area as the best in the neighborhood – and the Wednesday two-for-one burger deals make these the best bargains in the city.

There's a great stage for swing, jazz and rockabilly bands of all sizes to play on, with a dance floor perfect for large groups. One half of the bar is a patio to sit out and enjoy a warm Austin night. The inside of the bar is dark, with black walls and a grey, stone floor. Live music and a full service bar are only the beginning of the amenities offered at this establishment. This place is where one goes to see and be seen. Prices reflect the pocketbooks that walk through the door. Part of the draw is the ambiance, the other is the selection. The wines from around the world and scotch that can only be found in Scotland are favorites of the regulars.

Soho Lounge

Hip, classy bar with dancefloor
217 E 6th St
Austin, TX 78701

One of the classiest bars on Sixth Street, this longer rather than wider bar lets you sit and gaze at passers-by or fellow patrons. The lighting is extremely attractive, generating a genuine New York feel. You will enjoy sitting in one of the high-arched cushioned booths and catching glances of fellow patrons from the mirrored walls. The bar has an excellent music selection. If it is not too busy, play a round of pool or head upstairs to the dance floor.

This hot spot has been voted best dance club and best new nightclub by the Austin Nightclub and Bar Association. An in-house DJ spins records throughout the week as the music pumps out into the street, enticing patrons to step inside. The large interior is elegant with chandeliers and dark, polished wood everywhere. It caters to a dressier crowd than most downtown bars. The full bar specializes in all versions of the martini, from classic to creative, and offers frequent drink specials.

With its leather banquettes, cozy interior and dim lighting, it is the perfect spot for after-dinner drinks or for rubbing elbows with Austin's chic set. The street-side patio has a European flair, while the back patio provides a more intimate environment. Happy hour is observed M-F and Sa. This premiere bar and restaurant located in the Warehouse district is by far a first choice for one of the best steaks available in Austin. Besides a great steak, they host live jazz in their New York-style jazz bar. Bring a date and sit around one of the many cozy tables or up front right below the elevated band. If you just want to grab a top-shelf cocktail, head over to the separate bar and enjoy.

The Library

Walls of books and a floor for dancing
501 W 5th St
Austin, TX 78701
United States

This Sixth Street bar has a new take on the library: books are not things you read, they are things you look at. Some might smirk, but it's amazing how the spectacle of well-stocked shelves can promote conversation and appeal to one's higher sensibilities. The crowd mostly consists of college kids, but mature personalities sometimes appreciate the ironic juxtaposition of decorator books and, on the second floor, pool and air hockey. The DJ starts the evening with Top-40 and progresses into dance music.

This local favorite doesn't disappoint even the hungriest cowboy. Southwest favorites offered in huge portions are served with a bevy of libations to boot. Think saloon atmosphere with bistro fare, but don't be fooled, the food packs a big punch. Try the Green Chile Mac and Cheese or their ever-so-juicy 22oz Bone-In Ribeye, to make you remember why you love Texas cooking. Locals can't get enough of the Oven Baked Kettle of Green Chile Pork Stew, Yee-Haw! The mood here is just as lively as the food, thanks to tasty drinks like the Roaring Margaritas and their kickin' Happy Hour specials.

Traviata

If you're not tired of Italian cuisine, La Traviata gives you another reason to smile. Chef Gilchrist prepares innovative dishes of chicken, duck, and other meats to suit every palette. The staff know their food, so feel free to ask for advice if you're not sure what to order. It's not surprising to find the restaurant crowded; reservations are wise. The alltime Italian classic dessert, Tiramisu, is a must-try at La Traviata. The romantic interior makes it the ideal place to bring that special someone.

http://www.vicciaustin.com/
Heralded as sporting the hottest dance club in Austin, go to Vicci for Vegas-themed trendy, wall-to-wall action. Although the line is often long, it's worth the wait. Vicci boasts 5 bars in 10,000 square feet, a VIP area and the Di Lusso Lounge below. The drinks can be a bit pricey, and the staff have a reputation for being "curt", but if you want to dance and be seen in the Warehouse District's busiest spot, look no further.

Voodoo Room

High energy, dark
318 E 5th St
Austin, TX 78741
United States
+1 512 477 1641
A bright-red ball of fire with the club's name posted in the core of the inferno stands out like a sore thumb through the dark alley between Fifth and Sixth streets. That is where you enter this dark dance club, often crowded with young, energetic college kids. Wednesday night is High Energy House night, with DJ's spinning tracks in battles over who has the best breaks and trance grooves. Thursday night features a live, local rock band. Ages eighteen and over are allowed on both nights. Retro night lands on any given Friday and can often be crowded. There are pool tables to play on while listening to the impressive sound system.

Whiskey Bar

Watering Hole Straddles Genres
303, West Fifth Street
Austin, TX 78701
United States
+1 512 481 8599
Within the downtown drinking dichotomy of upscale sleek versus casually informal, Whiskey Bar makes its scene in the middle of the road, striking a happy medium between the two schools of thought by way of an interior that's darkly handsome and an atmosphere that's refreshingly easygoing. On Thursday evenings, such easygoingness descends into happy anarchy when the sudden availability of dollar wells brings in hordes of youngish, post-collegiate types, (including customers from the adjacent nightclubs who pop in for a cheap drink before returning), with customers slowly migrating into the back area for one of the most terribly retro dance scenes to be found in Austin.
