1886 Cafe and Bakery

New old school
604 Brazos Street
Austin, TX 78701
United States
+1 512 391 7121
http://www.1886cafeandbakery.com/
The 1886 was once the gathering point for pretty much all of Austin. With its diner-cafe feel, most flocked to The Driskill's lobby for wholesome food, the quality bar and the friendly atmosphere. The now revived 1886 Cafe and Bakery is no different. Walk across the chequered tile floor and take a seat beneath the art-deco chandeliers. The 1886 Bakery opens early and offers great chocolate croissants, muffins and aromatic coffee. If you're in for breakfast, the Cast Iron Skillets or Benedicts are just what you need. The lunch and dinner menus cover a good range of pasta, salads and steaks. It may say 1886, but step in and you know, it's still Austin chic.

The restaurant/bar opens weekdays for lunch to serve American tapas, open faced sandwiches, soups, salads and mini burgers. After five, 219 West turns down the lights and turns up the music to offer moderately priced cocktails and appetizers. Pick your meal based on the alcohol with which it's paired – Spicy Cheese Fries on The Beer Menu, Grilled Asparagus with Lump Crab on The Martini Menu, Turkey Fajitas on The Tequila Menu, etc. You won't go hungry…or thirsty…at 219 West.

This cafe, tucked away just west of Lamar Boulevard, is a pleasant destination for a gourmet lunch. The restaurant largely serves Hyde Park and Rosedale area professionals and residents. The interior is comfortable and intimate, with a number of tables scattered about its two open rooms. The decor is very simple, and the area is bright and inviting. It is quite popular with the lunch crowd, providing a relaxing escape from work. The menu is broad, with gourmet salads, Boar's Head meat and specialty sandwiches, quesadillas and pizzas. Everything served is homemade. Daily blue plate special includes items like chicken chalupas or fresh pasta. This is quick, fairly inexpensive gourmet fare.

For truly exotic food that you won't find at every street corner in Texas, try the subtle cuisine of Persia. In true Middle Eastern style, the reception is warm and welcoming and the menu consists of food evocative of the Arabian Nights - sensuous and bold. The menu highlights are the Kashk-o-Bademjan; a rich, smoky, baked-eggplant starter topped with dry yogurt, mint, walnuts and garlic, and Chelo Kabob-e-Koobideh (ground beef kabob) with char-grilled tomatoes with herbs and onions. The dessert menu has delightful items such as Persian ice cream with rosewater, pistachios and saffron.

Before long, you will be addressing a plate full of the Tex-Mex standard of your choice. Or try any of the variations on barbecued chicken-the chalupas of this variety are especially tasty. Entrees make this a fairly inexpensive spot, provided you do not get carried away on the margaritas. The remodeled Jean Luc's Bistro is now the Athenian Grill. Serving lunch (cafeteria style, ordering a la carte will take longer) and dinner, the restaurant has everything one would expect of a Greek grill. The mezze platter is well populated, with dolmades, spanakopita and tiropita and the lamb preparations are always a good choice. The entrées come with bread and salad. It does not have much to offer in terms of a wine list, apart from the Makedonikos Tsantali. The Athenian Grill serves an assortment of desserts. For those unsure, look around you; as they say, when in Austin, do as the Athenians .

The Austin Diner (earlier Laura's Bluebonnet Kitchen) comes very close to being a 50s diner cliche. The tables and chairs are vintage fifties style and a collection of vintage percolators, coffee pots and toasters catch your eye. Make yourself comfortable and a plethora of choices (from ginger pancakes to biscuits smothered in cream gravy) lie before you. The Austin Diner also makes huevos rancheros and other assorted Tex-Mex fare. The Cinnamon Rolls with warm butter glaze are a good choice; the Diner Special with its eggs, bacon, sausages, fries and biscuits is enough to feed a small convoy of bodyguards.

Looking comfortable under the cypress trees in an old two story townhouse, Azul is first and foremost a sandwicheria. Sure, they stock Hipster beers and some reds and whites, but when you're at Azul, you come for the eggs, meat and sandwiches. It feels a bit like a tapas bar, where you can sample bits, and the platter tray's a good bet. However, there's nothing meager about the pork tenderloin sandwich, the prosciutto filled PLT and the Mediterranean Tuna melt. Have more than your fair share, call for a cup of coffee and enjoy your siesta on the outdoor patio as the music lulls you to sleep.

Helping to fill Austin's unfortunate lag in such matters is Bess Bistro, which deals in a menu that's best described as "Atlantic" and does so in an atmosphere that's particularly conducive to conversation. It is easy to be overwhelmed by the sheer variety of flavors, so take it slow. Each meal is a study in contrasts and while east may not meet west seamlessly, they do have a good time together.

It's not everyday that one comes across takeaway gourmet French cuisine, but trust Bistro Le Marseillaise. After a dozen years at Chez Nous, the intrepid Pelegrin duo decided to become captains of their own kitchen. The unique Bistro Le Marseillaise was thus created. The online menu provides all you need to know. Delivery days are area specific and free for orders exceeding USD23. The Bistro Le Marseillaise only accepts cheques(neatly sealed in a plastic baggy, submerged in an ice cooler and kept in plain view outside your door). Hmmm. If James Bond could cook a great galantine de poulet, he'd be called Eric Pelegrin.

If you're used to a traditional cafeteria setting, be advised, things work differently at Blue Star Cafeteria. Branding themselves as a cafeteria with a twist, Blue Star serves what they call "uptown comfort food", and you don't have to stand in line holding a tray. Expect chicken fried quail, pork chops (glazed with honey), Crunchy Cod(with home made horseradish and mash potatoes)—you get the drift. The Blue Star's excellent kids menu features macaroni and cheese, pizza and other munch kin favorites. If wine is your hobby, sign up for the wine tasting(once a month), and if that's over committing, it's best to settle with a Chilean wine at the Happy Hour.

Priding itself on fresh, homemade food, this South Austin restaurant regularly enters its salsa in the local "Hot Sauce Challenge" and has won several times. The atmosphere is low-key and casual, making it a pleasant place for conversation or more festive gatherings. You will find a variety of enchilada plates as well as tacos, migas, tamales, and much more. It also offers somewhat more exotic and costly "national Mexican" cuisine, including marinated cabrito (goat), guisada (tender beef) sauteed in ancho sauce, and tuna steak with chile sauce. A full bar is available. The restaurant is available to reserve for events; catering off-site is offered as well.

This cozy Italian spot in a renovated house turns out some of the best pizza in the city. But the full menu of pastas and appetizers make this more than a pizzeria. The copper oven is still central to the experience, even if pasta is what you order: Wonderful, crusty breads are served with pepper-spiked olive oil for dipping, and the smell of pizza baking in the wood oven permeates the place. Ravioli is a crowd-pleaser, and so are all the pizza varieties. Lunch specials give Italian lovers no excuse for passing this place by. Incidentally, this restaurant is owned by the founder of the original Brick Oven on Red River, which is now a franchise.

Broken Spoke is a western honky-tonk established in 1964 and rapidly became an Austin favorite for country-western dancing. The "Spoke" is true country in a real dance hall with a real wood-plank floor. Watch cowboys and locals two-step the night away to live bands from around Texas. This dance hall provides an excellent atmosphere for those just learning to two-step or die-hard country fans driving in from the ranch for the weekend. Practice the Polka, Texas Two-Step or the Chicken, and be sure to try the Cotton-Eyed Joe. There is also a restaurant that serves traditional country food like chicken fried steak.

Ensconced behind a charming art gallery on West Sixth is this jewel of a Caribbean cafe. Established in 1997, Café Josie is still piquing the taste-buds of Austin diners. With an intimate dining room and an enclosed patio, the atmosphere is casual, but the food is out of this world. Chicken, beef and seafood, all cooked to a turn and spiced up with the zesty flavors of the islands; it is a step above your typical "fusion" restaurant. Try the Honey Chipotle Shrimp served on Cotija Black Beans and Poblano Rice, with Green Chile Polenta, Manchego Cheese, and Ancho Chile as an entree. The Blackberry Ginger Crisp is a fitting end to the meal.

So it is at this hotel restaurant, which consistently tops the list of Austin's best. Try the restaurant's specialty, to see how traditional blends with Texas flavors: Focaccia Crusted Pork Tenderloin served with Texas Ruby Red grapefruit and a citrus beurre blanc. But it is not just the centerpiece of a meal here that is outstanding. From the basket heaped with four types of bread and three flavors of butter to the sumptuous creme brulee, the food is consistently well conceived and perfectly executed. If that means hand rolling enchiladas, that's what you get. The ingredients and seafood (excellent garlic butter jumbo shrimp) are shipped in daily and the grilled meat is made from Certified Angus Beef. By the time you reach the end of this sentence, a new Tex-Mex restaurant would've opened in Austin. Of the many eateries, El Caribe is one. A blink-and-you-miss the establishment if you're driving past it, you would never guess it's been placed in three competitions at the Austin Chronicle Hot Sauce Contest. The pick of El Caribe's salsas are the mango and the chipotle-plum tomatillo(both sweet and hot) and the spicy avocado and tomato and jalapeño(spicy). Get the chicken stuffed with cheese, chorizo, and onions(the Chef's special) for the main course. If there's one thing that will worry some, it's how to contain an expanding stomach in this tiny place.

The China Bird's Nest, a favorite among the regular patrons, is stir fry of shrimp and chicken with vegetables in a special sauce served in a bird's nest of fried shredded potato. It has a classy but casual oriental setting. Window tables overlooking Congress Avenue and the State Capitol are available.

http://www.chuys.com/
Equal parts Tex-Mex restaurant and Elvis Presley shrine, this place combines south-of-the-border dining with a Graceland atmosphere, all for a well-affordable price. The wait staff, friendly and helpful, have been voted as the fastest in town by 'Austin Chronicle' readers. Given the competition, it is no small accomplishment that this is commonly considered the best Tex-Mex restaurant in town. The Elvis homage, oddly enough, works. Hubcaps and images of the rock icon set the stage for a dining experience that is pleasant and casual. The menu features a variety of Mexican dishes (the house special, an overstuffed chicken-and-green-chile confection called a Chuychanga, is especially recommended), steaks and burgers, and features a selection of cold beers and mixed drinks to help wash down the hearty meals. Other branches are found at 10520 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, TX 78753 (+1 512 836 3218) and at 11680 Research Boulevard, Austin, TX 78759 (+1 512 342 0011).

Founded in the 1950s, Cisco is an Austin institution. This Tex-Mex eatery has served its famous breakfast migas to the who's who. The clientele may have changed but the recipe hasn't. Migas, meaning 'crumbs' in Spanish, is made from eggs, cheese, vegetables and tortillas with black beans, chorizo and avocado chile varieties. Many a egg-hater has been converted by Cisco's migas. Cisco is also a bar, and the Bloody Mary is best had to nurse a hangover, not something you'd want to begin your day with. Migas, Fajitas and Toasted Biscuits, that's all you really need to know about Cisco.

Set in an attractive stone building, this Indian restaurant serves mostly North Indian food from the clay pit. The chef Maqbool Ahmed is the real McCoy, having served a stint at the Oberoi Hotel in New Delhi and has brought his panache for the tandoor to Austin. A must eat at this restaurant is the Tandoori platter bedecked with chicken, lamb, broccoli, tomatoes and even zucchini. As always, Indian restaurants are a haven for vegetarians and this is no exception serving Dals, Paneer and a lot of veggie curries.

Having catered to West Campus residents for three decades, Conan's Pizza ranks among the handful of area establishments that have managed to develop themselves into de facto University of Texas institutions. Insomuch as that the pizzeria's unusual name stems from the underground comic book store that once existed next door and that its walls are decorated with material taken from same, Conan's also acts as a much-needed time capsule containing a taste of UT's inimitable early-'70s charms. Likewise, the offerings still revolve around cheese-clogged, Chicago-style deep dish pies topped with such rare pizza accompaniments as artichoke hearts and chicken fajita strips. Several varieties of salad are also on hand in order to help college kids keep up the pretense of balanced eating.

The juice bar serves a variety of organic juices and smoothies. One also has the option of having a made-to-order concoction to their specifications. Went overboard at El Caribe>? This is one of those steak houses where the raw, real thing comes to the table on a platter for inspection. Steaks can be cut to any size—a boon for those with smaller appetites. The menu also offers fish, chicken, lamb and other choices, but in this atmosphere of dark wood, brass and exposed brick, beef is derigeur. Stuffed mushrooms are a house favorite appetizer, and the requisite onion rings here rate higher than most. A late-night menu, available on weekends, is a bonus for Sixth Street revelers looking for a snack.

Run by a sweet old grandma whose chief desire is to fatten people up, Dot's Place takes comfort food cooking back to its rustic roots. Though the menu itself is an anarchic jumble consisting of whatever it is that Granny Dot feels inclined to cook up on any given day, one may generally depend on the availability of chicken 'n' dumplings, fried catfish, and meatloaf; sides are vegetable-heavy and made up mostly of such southern staples as mashed potatoes and green beans, whereas the libation of choice is, of course iced tea. And it should come as no surprise that Dot's does a brisk business in peach cobbler and sweet potato pie.

Beatnik or hipster-style places such as this one aren't supposed to have a friendly, woodland view out in back, but this one does. Within its walls, one is swept away into the cute and amusing 1950s atmosphere; the antiqued robot dolls and general ambiance give you an idea of how the future was perceived a few decades ago. The espresso and various coffees are strong and flavorful, and at breakfast the usual items needed for a continental meal (muffins and pastries) are available. Vegetarian burgers and a variety of sandwiches round out the menu for lunches and dinners. The jazz playing on the jukebox makes it a cool experience.

Step inside this hacienda-style restaurant and find yourself whisked far south to the Mexican interior, where fine food is served in a charming colonial atmosphere. Chef Roberto Sabatinez has added his own creative dishes to the menu of old favorites, including a wonderfully imaginative chile relleno that employs an ancho chile rather than the usual poblano. Traditional dishes are well-prepared and the desserts go beyond many Mexican restaurants where flan is the only offering. Brunch is not to be missed; especially for those who love the Mexican custom of making the late morning meal a long, leisurely affair.

Foodheads began in 1992 as a boxed lunch catering company. The recent addition of a public café in a creaky old house near the UT Drag has attracted quite a crowd. Students and Central Austinites flock to this popular lunch spot on the weekend to enjoy made-from-scratch sandwiches on Foodheads' sunny patio. The casual eatery has a favorable reputation for fresh food, homemade soups, and giant sandwiches like mom used to prepare. Try one of their award-winning specialties with a cold iced tea (Herb Roasted Leg of Lamb, Tuna Nicoise or Grilled Portabella Bleu). Go on an empty stomach - Foodheads doesn't scrimp on the fixins.

Fran's Hamburgers

Not so much Ironic as Iconic

Austin, TX 78704
United States
+1 512 444 5738
Whereas several Texas-based fast food chains have resorted to the faux-'50s hamburger stand motif for some reason, Fran's doesn't have to fake it; this really is the sort of place where the waitresses are caustically priceless and where the exterior is adorned with fins like an Eisenhower-era Chevrolet not out of intentional irony, but because that's really how the post-war designers thought a restaurant should look. Unsurprisingly, Fran's operates under a pleasing, no-frills menu offering burgers (in three sizes, conveniently enough), fries, onion rings, and the like. And just as was the case several decades ago, things still get busy around noon; prepare yourself for brief lunchtime delays.

The whole "fellow obtaining an old family recipe and deciding to found a restaurant around it" thing is a common enough narrative within the dining world; in the case of Frank and Angie's, though, the fellow in question is Mike Hutchinson, co-founder of the eternally popular Hut's Hamburgers as well as the fortunate offspring of a Sicilian mother named Angie (the "Frank" is for Sinatra, whose picture presides over the festivities and whose various nicknames manifest themselves in the form of menu items). In defiance of the Austin area's college-fueled pizza saturation, Frank and Angie's has fought its way to the top of the pack with its unique, New York-style pizza, ingredient-intensive calzones, and a general Brooklyn-esque atmosphere.

Freddie's Place is on Bouldin Creek and everyone you meet who's been here will tell you there's something very 'Austiny' about it. It's like going over to a friend's and having a cookout. The entrées (pork chops, chicken fried steak) and the special Freddie's Heart Attack (a Texan burger with queso and ten slices of bacon) are truly southern and the desserts (apple pie, Freddie's cheesecake) are all house-made. You can also participate in a game of pool or 'washer pit' (if you know how to). Add to this live music and theme nights (Brisket and Blues, Catfish and Country) and you know why it's called good southern hospitality.

Southern-style cooking is often thought of as down-home, but at this restaurant, home is a plantation. Relaxing over brunch on the veranda, one almost expects to see Scarlett O'Hara floating by in a hoop skirt. The brunch buffet is always full to groaning with everything from boiled shrimp to a standing rib roast, carved to order. The dinner menu may be traditional, but all the entrees are reliably tasty. The breads are fabulous and the desserts are sinfully rich. Enjoy sipping on a mint julep while watching the peacocks make their way across the lawn.

Apart from this bit of information, it is interesting to note that the Migas are topnotch with dollops of cheese, peppers and fresh corn tortillas. The restaurant has a couple of dining rooms, one of which is built around the kitchen, giving it a very homely feel. Check out the Fish taco and the Queso flameado, or the El Presiendto (no guessing for who orders this), Chicken breast taco, a Beef taco, Tamale and Guacamole. Don't forget to chug down the famous margaritas made with fresh lime juice or have a shot of first-class tequila.

The family friendly Habana Calle 6 is deliciously Cuban. The crowd, an assorted mix of Cubans and Puerto Ricans, packs the place for the authentic food and live music. The speciality of the Habana is the Platano Loco (sliced plantain with pork and ham stuffing). Rice and beans, ropa vieja and the staple lechon lasado are surely a hit. For dessert, the tres leches cake is what most choose; not surprising, considering it's built a reputation of being the best in the city. Whether you choose to dine indoors or outside, is you wish.

For dinner, spoil yourself with filet mignon or perhaps the catch of the day grilled to perfection. Instead of those tired old Crab cakes, try Omar's Rattlesnake Cakes. Sample rabbit, javelina, boar or venison one at a time, or get a mixed Grill Platter for a varied feast. You can even do a modern take on surf-and-turf, a Black Angus Beef Tenderloin topped with lobster.

Sit out on the pier, sip on a mango margarita, and watch the cigarette boats churn through the water while you feast on a delightful Thai dish. In case you think you are in Hawaii, you are half right, the point of this place, set beside Oyster Landing, is to give you a Polynesian feeling deep in the Texas Hill Country. The food is generally inexpensive (usually $7-10) but you will feel like you paid for an airline ticket to the island itself. If Polynesian Tex-Mex sounds like a contradiction in terms, try this place out. The contradiction is well worth exploring.

Burgers range from the simplest one-patty version to a double-meat buffalo burger with all the trimmings. As for sides, the onion rings are an option. For those who want their beef sans bun, they offer savory chicken fried steak, cooked tender with gravy that's not too thick and not too drippy. As an alternative, the Carnitas a la Parrilla is marinated and grilled beef steak or chicken tenderloins with a smoked chipotle sauce. The old Weigl family iron works no longer forges metal, but a tasty assortment of fine Texas barbecue. With walls adorned by branding irons, the motif is quintessentially Western, perhaps for the benefit of conventioners from the nearby convention center. At the counter, order your choice of sliced beef, chicken, beef ribs, pork ribs, pork loin and sausage for a two-meat combo plate completed with sides of potato salad and beans. Or make your choice of meat by the pound. The spicy sauce is a tangy counterpoint. And if you are craving barbecue somewhere far away, note that Iron Works ships their goods anywhere.

Patrons enjoy fantastic Cajun food in a Mardi Gras-style setting. Located in the heart of downtown sixth street. Roux offers many impressive menu items. With happy hours and a full bar. Entrees include Jambalaya Shrimp, Bronzed Chilean Sea Bass, and Smoked Gouda Rigatoni. Or try one of their po'boy sandwiches. The atmosphere is casual, but festive, and live music is scheduled upstairs every evening in The Parish.

This Clarksville restaurant, opened in 1975, manages to stay on Austin's dining forefront because of the innovative cuisine created by chef David Garrido. Begin with one of his signature appetizers, perhaps Oysters on Yucca Root Chips with Habanero-Honey Aioli, follow with a Latin-American inspired entree such as Lamb with Orange Flan and Guajillo Mole, and top it off with a Lemon Cajeta Ice Box Cake. The menu is imaginative, the execution perfect, the service professional and the atmosphere comfortably elegant.

The Marinated Chicken Breast is the specialty here, but most people gather here in the evenings for great coffee and some bird watching. The coffee drinks and sandwiches are yummy and Wheat Roast Vegetarian Barbecue is the best choice for all veggies. If you're lucky, you might find your favorite musicians sipping coffee here.

A longtime favorite on South Congress, Jo's opened a second location in the downtown area to join the ranks of the ever popular 2nd Street District. This casual coffee shop is bustling all day long, first with the morning crowd of caffeine addicts, followed by writers, grad students and WiFi worshipers, and finally, filling up in the evenings with friends gathering to grab a drink after work. The highlight of Jo's downtown locale is the spacious patio. Grab a seat at one of their high tables to nurse a beer or munch on a famous Jo's Chicken Burger. Jo's exemplifies Austin's easygoing disposition and would be a great stop for out-of-town guests and first-time visitors. - Sarah Murray

Its wonderfully diverse menu makes vegetarians and non-vegetarians go happy and healthy. The vegetables are homegrown and pesticide-free, and the beef and chicken are free-range. Breakfast features omelets, pancakes and great breakfast tacos. Prices are on the inexpensive side, ranging from USD4 to USD9 for the main course. The restaurant is open 24 hours, every day. A sushi bar provides counter seating for those who want to watch the chefs do their work, transforming fresh seafood and other ingredients into sushi, sashimi, yakitori and kushiyaki. Alongside the bar, there is Western-style table service. But in a separate dining room, you can go completely traditional and sit on tatami mats at low tables. Either way, the food is fresh and authentic. Try the kushiyaki (skewered, charcoal-broiled meat and vegetables) as an accompaniment to your sushi, or get a seafood platter. It is nice to know that you can still get a Double Cappuccino for less than three bucks in this country, but the difference between this campus coffee house and its corporate competitor boils down to a few 1970s-style lime-green love seats. The coffee maintains a pleasing, medium strength. There are lots of fruit/energy drinks to choose from. The stone floor is polished and so clean you could eat off of it. The ever-popular Longhorn Po-Boys and Falafel shares rent space with this java house, creating two stores in one.

Austin has always been known for its lush landscape and tree-friendly topography, but downtown is now a little bit greener. City dwellers can enjoy Leaf, a restaurant devoted entirely to- as one might guess- salad. This innovative eatery in the trendy 2nd Street District was opened in 2006 and boasts a giant counter chock-full of fresh fixins. Leaf's menu is a tribute to Austin landmarks, with moderately-priced salads such as the "West Campus," "Greenbelt," and "Capitol City Cobb." Of course, it wouldn't be Austin without a build-your-own option, which allows hungry patrons to pick from an overwhelming variety of toppings, including five lettuce mixes, artichoke hearts, mandarin oranges, candied pecans, goat cheese, and a long list of homemade dressings. Grab lunch at Leaf for a healthy break in between shopping sprees. -Sarah Murray

Lost in a strip-mall sea of dentist offices and second-rate video stores, it might take you a while to find this street-food treasure featuring vegetarian food in the tradition of South India. The local favorite was chosen by the Austin Chronicle as Best Vegetarian. Three reasons: it is cheap, fast and like nothing you have eaten before. That is, unless you are used to pancakes twice as big as the plate, crisply fried with lentil curry and coconut salsa. Or, how about the Chole Samosa? That is two samosas soaked in chickpea gravy, topped with sweet-hot sauces, chopped onions and cilantro. Wash it down with a Masala Tea or a mango flavored yogurt drink they call Lassi. A lack of ambiance is excused by sheer authenticity.

The wine list is encyclopedic, and the menu is a blend of tapas, pastas and other Mediterranean dishes, including such classics as Seafood Risotto Paella and Bouillabaisse. There is a fresh fish special daily, as well as a special vegetarian offering. The Beef Filet is a delectable choice for meat-lovers; also try the Broiled Lamb Loin. With all the black leather, neon and jazz here, one might be suspicious. Is this a trendy Mexican joint where the food takes a back seat to the slick atmosphere? The answer is a resounding "no". One bite of the Chile Relleno en Nogada is the proof; tender Pork Picadillo studded with raisins and stuffed into a roasted poblano pepper, then sauced with walnut cream. Or try the Enchiladas, Gorditas and Flautas; all make excellent choices. Sunday brunch, with live jazz, is a winner, but dinner and happy hour are the real standout events. Spicy food from a variety of origins makes dining in this place a taste-tempting treat. Try the Tea-Smoked Duck, which is finished in a clay oven, or, for something more traditional, the Tandoori Chicken. The buzz about Mars would not be complete, however, without a mention of the Rice Paper Fish which is the catch of the day cooked in rice paper with whatever combination of herbs, spices and vegetables that strikes the mood of the chef. The results are typically fantastic. If you feel adventurous, try the spicy Thai-style noodles.

This is an upbeat, casual venue attracting customers of all ages; a comfortable place to relax over margaritas with your friends. It is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and serving standard Tex-Mex fare like Migas and Enchiladas. The house specialty is the Fajitas, complete with all the necessary trimmings; try either the Vegetarian or the Chicken/Beef Combination. Ask for the homemade habanero or green specialty sauces for your chips, they are not on the menu and they are fabulous.

The Mesa Ranch could've been a hunter's lodge and you wouldn't have known the difference. Hats and lassos hang casually around the restaurant and you smell leather in the air. Pick a bar stool to be served a stiff drink, head out to the patio and you'll be served a traditional southwestern ranch meal. Expect steaks, seafood, chicken and game cooked over mesquite. The Mesa Ranch specialties are the Nopalitos, cactus soaked in tequila brine and grilled poblano. They don't come much more rustic than this. The live music is southern, but unlike the usual honky tonk.

From the size of the crowd on a recent visit, it is clear that Mirabelle is winning its own share of fans. Beef eaters will praise chef Jesus Torres for his Pasillo-Rubbed Tenderloin, and the Grilled Shrimp are a solid choice for those who gravitate toward offerings from the sea. The atmosphere is cozy enough for a romantic dinner, and the wine list has plenty of affordable offerings. Among the desserts, the Chocolate mousse is a creamy delight.

Vegetarian food may not have the Texas pedigree of barbecued ribs or tacos al carbon, but at Mother's Cafe and Garden at Hyde Park, it is as toothsome as any native cuisine. Besides, this is as vegetarian a town as Texas can boast, so sampling spinach lasagna or even tofu barbecue is an essential part of the Austin experience. The menu runs the gamut from butter-and-cheese-laden dishes to skinnier choices, such as brown rice and vegetables. Such an accommodating list of dishes is an indication of the laid-back, cozy atmosphere here, where everyone is welcome, and everyone leaves satisfied.

A recipient of the Preservation Merit Award (2006), Nau's Enfield Drug has existed since the early 30s. Pharmacist Lambert Labay purchased the store from founders Hylton and Eleanor Nau and has maintained the church pew booths and wooden bar stools. The most treasured relic here is the soda fountain that dispenses the ubiquitous home made malts and shakes. The burgers and sandwiches are also great value for money. Made from fresh ground beef and grilled just right, the buns are topped with melting cheese. It's easy to forget, Nau's Enfield Drug is first and foremost a drugstore!

Oaxacan Tamaleo(an amalgam of tamale and Leonora, the owner) is a small mom-and-pop affair that seats about a couple of dozen people and a menu that isn't extensive by any means. The restaurant isn't pretentious about any of this. They do a few things, but they do them well. The tamales are served in huge healthy portions (stuffed with chicken, pork or beans and salsa and cheese) wrapped in banana leaves. The eatery also has daily specials on weekdays, for lunch and dinner. Dig into the Lamb Shoulder Barbacoa or the mojo de ajo and you could very well want this to be your last meal.

Step inside of this relaxed, anachronistic setting (the place is part Sixties jazz lounge, part fashion museum) and you will treat yourself to more than simply a great meal. Granted, that is the other part of this place's appeal; if you are here for seafood, the Snapper Victoria (about $15) is excellent, and if you're a carnivore, the "616" (a black-angus cheeseburger) is a good choice. Soups and salads range from $4-6; one soup in particular, the chicken/veggie combo called the "caldo de pollo," is especially recommended; also, the chicken-fried quail is quite tasty.

Reminiscent of the Bogart era, Reed's Jazz & Supper Club is draped in burgundy tones. From the performance area at one end, you hear the piano accompanying a sultry voice and almost expect a Sam Spade to take your order. The well-trained staff is efficient and will help you with the seafood and steak choices. Live music starts early on weekdays and by 8:30p on Fridays and Saturdays. This goes perfectly well with the daily Happy Hour slot. Plant yourself at the bar and hope that of all the gin-joints in all the towns in all the world...

Regio

Bird in hand
1928, Riverside Drive
Austin, TX 78741
United States
+1 512 326 1888
El Regio is a term for the area around Monterrey, which is where the owner's from. El Regio means 'the regal one' in Spanish. El Regio is also a term synonymous with the pollo asado. Grilled marinated chicken is all this little drive through shack specializes in, and people would drive across town for it, were they not to have multiple outlets. The pollo asado is served with beans, tortillas, onions(sweet and grilled) and a tomato/green avocado salsa(may cause problems if consumed in excess). This is largely a drive-through, but they do have picnic tables around. El Regio is one place where being given 'the bird' is not a problem.

http://www.restaurantjezebel.com/
Austin has its fair share of upscale dining, but Restaurant Jezebel rises above the rest with an innovative menu, extensive wine list, and unique style. The downtown restaurant is tucked into a narrow, high-ceilinged space, but the small size is offset by an intelligent interior design. Sexy wall art, low lighting, and unfinished walls give the dining experience an intimate feel. Chef/Owner Parind Vora mans the kitchen, preparing entrees with fresh seafood and prime meats. Try the mahogany garlic chicken breast or the crusted Atlantic salmon. As for the wine list, even a connoisseur would get lost in its pages. Don not be shy about asking the wait staff for their recommendation. Jezebel is not priced for nightly patronage, but is more suitable for a celebratory evening or a treat for your out-of-town guests. -Sarah Murray

Specializing in Brazilian cuisine, albeit with a contemporary touch, Sampaio's is a place for all occasions. There's variety on the menu, and a lot of the dishes are new and exciting, largely because one rarely comes across an authentic Brazilian restaurant. The bar is well stocked, with wine as well as beer. Start with a Caipirinha(sugar cane juice and rum, with lime) with a side order (cheese or chicken pastries, accompanied with a tangy sauce) before you move on to the Galinhada (Brazilian paellas), churrasco beef or the milanesa. There may be a little bit of trail and error, but when the errors turn out as tasty, no one's complaining!

In a space leased from The Austin Motel is some of the best Mexican food in the city; certainly the best Mexican breakfast. Huevos rancheros, Migas (even a variation with mushrooms), breakfast tacos. Need we say more? The Posole, a chicken soup with a masa broth, is heavenly; it is only available on weekends. Enchiladas and tacos can also be had, as well as Central American specialties. A large patio beckons on fine days, and the inside dining space is cool, light and comfortable, with a sun-moon-and-stars mural on the floor and overhead. The Soup Peddler is as fascinating a business as David Ansel's story. What started off as a door-to-door delivery service later spawned a book "The Soup Peddler's Slow and Difficult Soups" and now a full scale delivery service. The Soup Peddler caters not just soups, but an entire meal. The gastronomically challenged need not worry, all deliveries are accompanied by a snippet of a story, ingredients and instructions for reheating/serving. The Soup Peddler doesn't take itself too seriously, but will definitely go more than the extra mile to accommodate its clients. Thy the peddler, and you'll be a Soupie for life.

This restaurant has it all: a delectable menu, happy hour and a ritzy location in the upscale shopping area of Austin. The décor is airy and trendy with large windows overlooking the streets and slick booths that are comfortable. The cuisine leans towards South western and the restaurant serves brunch, lunch and dinner. Dishes to look out for are the scandalously succulent Pork Tenderloin, Cajun Seafood Scampi and Blue-Corn Crepe. The portions are humongous so you may want to skip dessert.

Manor Road's crowded collection of East Austin Tex-Mex restaurants and comfort food joints has a new Italian neighbor. Opened in 2007, Stortini is the latest attempt to bring old world-style cuisine to central Texas. The ristorante features a casual, low-lit dining room and a breezy back patio with quaint four tops and a friendly wait staff. The pasta is made in-house and the desserts are nothing short of decadent (even if the portions are on the small side). If you're in the mood for a hearty meal, try their fresh seafood-filled Spaghetti Pescatore or the 'shroom lovers' Papardelle and Marsala Mushrooms. For lighter fare, go with the chicken parmesan panini or an antipasti plate of steamed Saffron Mussels.

Just northwest of downtown, located in Gateway Square, is one of the newest additions to a growing population of sushi restaurants in Austin. The decor is simple and modern in design, with muted browns and tans filling the color scheme. The ambiance from day to night is quite different. Daytime hours offer a casual atmosphere for business meetings or quick lunches. In the evening, candles light the dining area creating a relaxed environment. The curved sushi bar seats more than just a handful of people and the sushi chefs enjoy conversing with customers. One popular choice is the Barra Kebab (tandoori lamb), marinated in yogurt and spices to enhance its delicate flavor. Plenty of vegetarian entrees are available too. If spice is what you are looking for, this is the place. Thai Kitchen is one of the best places in Austin to liven up your taste buds with some unusual ethnic fare. The extensive menu denotes the degree of spice in each dish (fried curry rice to vermicelli stir-frys) and the four-pepper dishes will have you drinking more water than usual. Highly recommended, the Ba Mi Num soup, made with chicken broth, ginger, cilantro, lime, bean sprouts and your choice of meat, is a pleasant way to cure the sniffles. And although the wait staff seems a little gruff at times, it may be because the place is so packed, but do not let that stop you. This local chain that boasts the motto "fresh, fast, and healthy" offers sandwiches that taste fresher and less corporate than their competitors. Even better, the prices are affordable. Vegetarians will enjoy the Veggie Delight cold sub loaded with mushrooms, avocado, sprouts, black olives, cream cheese, onions, tomatos, and ThunderSauce — their trademark special sauce. The other subs offered are largely made up of traditional deli meats such as Smoked Chicken, Turkey, Tuna Salad, Roast Beef and Mixed Cuts. If you're looking for something lighter try a hummus sandwich or soup and salad. There are too many Austin locations to note them all here. Visit their Web site for a complete listing of locations. Look for franchise locations in the Houston area and San Antonio.

This spacious restaurant is often packed because of the incredible varieties of Dim Sum. Come for a Sunday Brunch and witness the hustling waiters as they pass your table with steaming Dim Sum carts. You can gorge on dumplings, buns, cakes and various noodle dishes. If Dim Sum is not for your taste buds, then go for some of the specialty seafood dishes, such as the Red Snapper Filet or Sea Scallops.

When you are on your way to Top Notch, don't be surprised if you have a déjà vu moment. It's probably because you're recalling Matthew McConaughey and his buddies having their burgers and fries at this very place in 'Dazed and Confused'. Top Notch is probably one of the fewest places to have an indoor charcoal grill, which gives their cheeseburgers the added oomph. The fried chicken(with fries and coleslaw on the side) and shrimp is also a local favorite, but neither popularity nor fame can make Top Notch hike their prices. You gotta love them.

The staff know their food, so feel free to ask for advice if you're not sure what to order. It's not surprising to find the restaurant crowded; reservations are wise. The alltime Italian classic dessert, Tiramisu, is a must-try at La Traviata. The romantic interior makes it the ideal place to bring that special someone.

With art-deco charm well in place, the wooden interiors and comfy booths make Truluck's extremely inviting. Given Truluck's 'commitment to crabs', no one doubts the restaurant's long standing relationship with seafood. The tiger shrimp, Brazilian Pacu fish and virtually all of the appetizers come in large portions. To narrow down the array of entrées, pick from the salmon and flounder. Truluck's also serves steaks and chops, but if you're at a place known for its seafood, why crawl back to land??

You can expect to find the likes of Trout Meuniere, Croque Madame, Pate Maison, Baked Brie, and Tuna Bearnaise on the menu. Whether the students are overworked or plain tired, it doesn't show, because the service is flawless and these prep chefs do a great job with the ingredients. The wine list is also impressive. There's always something to learn, for both students and visitors. So don't give this place a miss.

A hot spot in Northcross Mall, The Veranda invites diners, with its well lit open spaces and cozy dining areas. If the orange and red decor doesn't stimulate your appetite, the assortment of salads and sandwiches(numbering around 40 at last count) and specialty rack of lamb surely will. The bar is convenient for something more relaxed and casual. The process of wine selection at The Veranda is simplified; the sommelier guides the diners to the wine rack and asks them to pick a bottle! Some say it's asking too much, but most agree, it's like going over to family.

This cozy neighborhood eatery is a well-kept secret among the Austin dining elite. The chef lines up a delectable menu of fine Italian favorites that has kept the whole city talking. The service is pleasant and the prices are reasonable. The wine selection is extraordinary with 30 wines by the glass from which to choose. Dessert options average USD8 in price, but are well worth the indulgence. The wait for a table has become legendary, but the food more than makes up for it.

You may not realize it, but what you eat at Vivo is all made from Chef Roger Diaz's grandmother's and mother's recipes. Reds, greens, oranges and purples give Vivo a cozy, yet vibrant atmosphere. If warm colors, especially red stimulate appetite, the restaurant has a good thing going. A mouthful of their Taco with tofu and tomatoes set the ball rolling. Then come the enchiladas with chicken and tangy hot sauce. You could also plant yourself at the bar and keep the margaritas coming. If you have kids, it's advisable to pick some other place, but the atmosphere is great if you want to meet friends over a round of tequilas, or just have a meal for two.

When peanut butter and jelly starts to get stale, pay a visit to the 2nd Street District's famous sandwich makers, Which Wich. A favorite among Austin businessmen and busy families, Which Wich serves up warm, made-to-order sandwiches, house potato chips, frothy milkshakes, and generously cut Rice Krispie treats. The real appeal of this legendary sandwich shop is the power it gives the patron– you create your wich by selecting ingredients that have been written on the face of a brown paper bag. Try the toasty Turkey Reuben, the vegetarian-friendly hummus and bell peppers, or the ever popular Tuna Salad. Packing your lunch never tasted this good. -Sarah Murray

'Dynamic' is one adjective that can be used to describe Wink. The decor talks largely of cool tones, subtle lighting and Japanese rice paper hanging from the windows. The menu at Wink changes on a day to day basis as the restaurant ships in a lot of their ingredients daily, to maintain the taste and quality of their dishes. The sauces too are made with fresh puree. This isn't all. The wine list of around 70 selections undergoes changes every two weeks so that only the best vintages are stocked. You would definitely want to come back here for you are not treated like royalty everyday!

Located in a downtown turn-of-the-century Victorian home with a large outdoor dining area and a tree-top bar, it was founded more than ten years ago by four chefs with divergent influences. Banquet and special events facilities are available for reservation. A generally bustling, social atmosphere, and an attentive and knowledgeable wait staff are on hand. Most customers arrive in professional or dressy casual attire. Priding itself on a menu with something for everyone, the Southwestern cuisine is really an amalgam of Cajun, Southern, and Californian specialties. Representative dishes include gumbo, jerk chicken salad, fish tacos, enchiladas, and grilled rib-eye steak with chipotle sauce.

The familiar types of sushi are available, as well as variations such as Teriyaki Chicken Rolls and Tofu Rolls. Try some "heart smart" entrees, such as Steak and Veggies Teriyaki White Chicken and Broccoli.
