The one problem in Austin is the lack of immigrant Italians and fine authentic Italian cuisine. The Bellagio has taken care of both. It may be in a strip mall of sorts, but don't be fooled. Step into the spacious restaurant; a look at the elegant art and sculpture that fill the interior would tell you that Bellagio is definitely upscale. Try the risotto or the calamari Bellagio, accompanied by a host of wines and you'll know you're in Little Italy. Fusion food rises above its label at this Westlake eatery. The marriage of European and Asian cuisine, is all the rage, but here it actually fuses, rather than flops. From the first glance, the decor is comfortable, but elegant, with tasteful touches of Asian art and design. Must-haves include the Hot and Sour Gumbo and the Rack of Lamb, served with Japanese eggplant, Asian pasta and vegetables. It is easy to be overwhelmed by the sheer variety of flavors, so take it slow. Each meal is a study in contrasts and while east may not meet west seamlessly, they do have a good time together.
