Bellagio

Italians in Austin
6507, Jester Boulevard
Austin, TX 78750
United States

The one problem in Austin is the lack of immigrant Italians and fine authentic Italian cuisine. The Bellagio has taken care of both. It may be in a strip mall of sorts, but don't be fooled. Step into the spacious restaurant; a look at the elegant art and sculpture that fill the interior would tell you that Bellagio is definitely upscale. Try the risotto or the calamari Bellagio, accompanied by a host of wines and you'll know you're in Little Italy. The Happy Hour at Bellagio has appetizers at half the normal price, but why taste just the icing when you can have the whole cake?

Bistro 88

Euro-Asian fusion
2712 Bee Caves Road
Austin, TX 78746

Fusion food rises above its label at this Westlake eatery. The marriage of European and Asian cuisine, is all the rage, but here it actually fuses, rather than flops. From the first glance, the decor is comfortable, but elegant, with tasteful touches of Asian art and design. Must-haves include the Hot and Sour Gumbo and the Rack of Lamb, served with Japanese eggplant, Asian pasta and vegetables. It is easy to be overwhelmed by the sheer variety of flavors, so take it slow. Each meal is a study in contrasts and while east may not meet west seamlessly, they do have a good time together.

This clean, bright place is a comfortable stop for a quick meal. The sandwiches are full of flavor, the baked potatoes are huge and the salad bar is the freshest in town. A personal favorite is a one-trip salad bar and half a Plain Jane baked potato. It is just enough to put a smile on your face, but not enough to make you want to go back to your desk and sleep for the rest of the workday. This deli is consistently good and the service is well organized, so mistakes are few.

Located in the Rosedale neighborhood, this bakery serves as a meeting spot for locals to enjoy their morning cup of coffee and a variety of pastry offerings. Stacks of newspapers already read are collected for others to enjoy, along with a variety of free local papers and magazines. Freshly baked bread is offered in a variety of styles and flavors. Lunch is often a busy time with customers enjoying salads, soups, sandwiches and pizzas. The crowd is relaxed and the staff is friendly. Mismatched tables and chairs are located throughout the café for dining in.

Zoot

Upscale restaurant
509 Hearn Street
Austin, TX 78703
United States

If the always-fresh menu and extensive list of wines by the glass do not tempt you, the gems on the dessert cart will. The food is signature Stewart Scruggs, fresh ingredients, perfectly prepared and served simply. A fish entry is different every night and the Devil in Zoot is the restaurant's signature offering for chocoholics. Vegetarians will rejoice at the pleasing offerings styled especially for them and carnivores will find plenty of hearty fare, from appetizers to entries. The pastry chef outdoes herself nightly with tender, flavorful breads and wickedly decadent desserts.
