New old school |
604 Brazos Street Austin, TX 78701 United States +1 512 391 7121 http://www.1886cafeandbakery.com/ |
The 1886 was once the gathering point for pretty much all of Austin. With its diner-cafe feel, most flocked to The Driskill's lobby for wholesome food, the quality bar and the friendly atmosphere. The now revived 1886 Cafe and Bakery is no different. Walk across the chequered tile floor and take a seat beneath the art-deco chandeliers. The 1886 Bakery opens early and offers great chocolate croissants, muffins and aromatic coffee. If you're in for breakfast, the Cast Iron Skillets or Benedicts are just what you need. The lunch and dinner menus cover a good range of pasta, salads and steaks. It may say 1886, but step in and you know, it's still Austin chic. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The Austin Diner (earlier Laura's Bluebonnet Kitchen) comes very close to being a 50s diner cliche. The tables and chairs are vintage fifties style and a collection of vintage percolators, coffee pots and toasters catch your eye. Make yourself comfortable and a plethora of choices (from ginger pancakes to biscuits smothered in cream gravy) lie before you. The Austin Diner also makes huevos rancheros and other assorted Tex-Mex fare. The Cinnamon Rolls with warm butter glaze are a good choice; the Diner Special with its eggs, bacon, sausages, fries and biscuits is enough to feed a small convoy of bodyguards. Despite its name, this is a full-scale restaurant offers more than just coffee. The menu happens to be one of the most extensive in town and covers breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast includes an assortment of American favorites as well as soft tacos. Lunch and dinner offer everything from salads, soups and sandwiches, two vegetarian entrees, burgers and pasta - with the Tomatillo Crawfish Pasta at $9.45 - an excellent choice. Fresh-baked desserts are also available, as is a selection of beer and wine. Customers can keep it casual inside or on the patio while dining in this wooden frame house. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Small and quaint is how you can describe this place best. But don't let the small factor undermine the Mexican fare dished out here - you can actually watch them cook. Crowded with hungry students, travelers, local patrons, and professionals, the food is delicious but inexpensive. Food includes homemade salsa, breakfast tacos, migas, enchiladas, chalupas et al. You can call ahead and order - with the prices, for a whole baseball team. In spite of the demand and queue, service is quick. Note: no credit cards please. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Egg white and blue |
808, East Cesar Chavez Austin, TX 78702 United States +1 512 457 9074 |
Looking comfortable under the cypress trees in an old two story townhouse, Azul is first and foremost a sandwicheria. Sure, they stock Hipster beers and some reds and whites, but when you're at Azul, you come for the eggs, meat and sandwiches. It feels a bit like a tapas bar, where you can sample bits, and the platter tray's a good bet. However, there's nothing meager about the pork tenderloin sandwich, the prosciutto filled PLT and the Mediterranean Tuna melt. Have more than your fair share, call for a cup of coffee and enjoy your siesta on the outdoor patio as the music lulls you to sleep. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Stop by this eatery if you are interested in sipping coffee with pancakes while you enjoy a scenic view, or chowing down on some serious lunch specials a bit later in the afternoon. The spinach lasagna is a good choice, as are the grilled sandwiches. Cafe Java, an alternate mode of operation, gives the place a nice coffeehouse ambiance, but does not interfere with the tasty items on the main menu. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Whether it's a quick lunch or leisurely dinner on the deck, this cafe goes way beyond expectations for a grocery-store eatery. As Central Market is no ordinary grocery store, so Cafe on the Run is no pedestrian deli. Soups, salads and sandwiches are all executed with creative flair; for instance, the roast beef sandwich is dressed up with Brie, and the turkey with Havarti. Ingredients are fresh, and most of them are available at the adjacent grocery. And if you don't want to exercise your sweet tooth, stay away from the bakery case. The Creme Brulee and Italian Cream Cake will tempt you every time. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Founded in the 1950s, Cisco is an Austin institution. This Tex-Mex eatery has served its famous breakfast migas to the who's who. The clientele may have changed but the recipe hasn't. Migas, meaning 'crumbs' in Spanish, is made from eggs, cheese, vegetables and tortillas with black beans, chorizo and avocado chile varieties. Many a egg-hater has been converted by Cisco's migas. Cisco is also a bar, and the Bloody Mary is best had to nurse a hangover, not something you'd want to begin your day with. Migas, Fajitas and Toasted Biscuits, that's all you really need to know about Cisco. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Need we say more? The Posole, a chicken soup with a masa broth, is heavenly; it is only available on weekends. Enchiladas and tacos can also be had, as well as Central American specialties. A large patio beckons on fine days, and the inside dining space is cool, light and comfortable, with a sun-moon-and-stars mural on the floor and overhead.
