Austin's Tamale House

Inexpensive but great food
5003 Airport Boulevard
Austin, TX 78751-2708
United States
+1 512 453 9842
Small and quaint is how you can describe this place best. But don't let the small factor undermine the Mexican fare dished out here - you can actually watch them cook. Crowded with hungry students, travelers, local patrons, and professionals, the food is delicious but inexpensive. Food includes homemade salsa, breakfast tacos, migas, enchiladas, chalupas et al. You can call ahead and order - with the prices, for a whole baseball team. In spite of the demand and queue, service is quick. Note: no credit cards please.

Bistro 88

Euro-Asian fusion
2712 Bee Caves Road
Austin, TX 78746
United States

Fusion food rises above its label at this Westlake eatery. The marriage of European and Asian cuisine, is all the rage, but here it actually fuses, rather than flops. From the first glance, the decor is comfortable, but elegant, with tasteful touches of Asian art and design. Must-haves include the Hot and Sour Gumbo and the Rack of Lamb, served with Japanese eggplant, Asian pasta and vegetables. It is easy to be overwhelmed by the sheer variety of flavors, so take it slow. Each meal is a study in contrasts and while east may not meet west seamlessly, they do have a good time together.

Carmelo's Ristorante

Upscale Italian

Whether for a deal-making business lunch or romantic dinner date, this upscale Italian spot proves worthy. The service is impeccable, but warm, matching the inviting atmosphere of stone, wood and soft lighting. Start with the Combination Antipasto for a variety of delectable tastes. As for entrees, the Steak Diane, is enough to impress anyone, while the Salmon Ravioli is a subtler pleasure. Then linger over espresso and dessert. You will not want the experience to end.

Austin, TX 78727
United States

Located in Arboretum, the Cool River Cafe is a steakhouse and grill. If you think a 'steakhouse' is an embellishment for 'place where cowboys carve into meat', you will be pleasantly surprised. The elegant and formal ambiance of the Cool River Cafe is often a platform for business meetings and wooing couples. Master chef Jamie Gutierrez serves up some of the most delicious Certified Angus Beef steaks (Steak Oscar's a pick) and seafood (Devil Creek Shrimp wins this one) with excellent pairings from the 375 vintages wine list. Ideal for those looking to make their first impression a lasting one.

Tucked away in the trees near Lake Austin is a country home, where some of the best game in the city comes to the table. A taste for the exotic is definitely welcome here, as are hearty appetites. Instead of those tired old Crab cakes, try Omar's Rattlesnake Cakes. Sample rabbit, javelina, boar or venison one at a time, or get a mixed Grill Platter for a varied feast. You can even do a modern take on surf-and-turf, a Black Angus Beef Tenderloin topped with lobster.

Little Deli puts together items like Meatball Subs, New Orleans Muffalattas, Tuna Salads, and Liverwurst - all of which are scrumptious and filling. Pot-roast and sandwich lovers will find plenty to relish on. Don't miss the toothsome Banana Pudding on the dessert list. The kind owners make you feel at home even on crowded days, and service is usually swift. The atmosphere is always abuzz with more locals than outsiders. As most patrons will testify, the drive to this deli is worthwhile, and parking is available.

This Mexican eatery serves homemade grub in a home-like setting. The aroma of Corn Tortillas and Migas waft around as you are seated in a small area surrounded by bar stools. A great place for breakfast, it is pretty busy at other times as well. Those with vegan cravings, try the vegetarian enchiladas. Others can gorge on are Gorditas, Queso, Chalupa, and of course, tacos. Beer, margaritas, Cimichuri and Salsa Roja are available.

Austin, TX 78746
United States

What started as simply a brunch and lunch spot, with takeout on the side, has branched out to become a viable dinner alternative. The relaxed surroundings during the day are spruced up with white linens at night, signaling a change in menu and attitude. When you visit, you will smell the scrumptious baked goods as soon as you open the door. Menu items include such Austin brunch favorites as migas and breakfast tacos, and more refined fare such as salads and pastas. The tortilla soup has a distinctive flavor, and the chocolate meringue pie is not to be missed. This is a popular spot, so expect to wait during peak times, such as weekends.
