1886 Cafe and Bakery

New old school
604 Brazos Street
Austin, TX 78701
United States
+1 512 391 7121
http://www.1886cafeandbakery.com/
The 1886 was once the gathering point for pretty much all of Austin. With its diner-cafe feel, most flocked to The Driskill's lobby for wholesome food, the quality bar and the friendly atmosphere. The now revived 1886 Cafe and Bakery is no different. Walk across the chequered tile floor and take a seat beneath the art-deco chandeliers. The 1886 Bakery opens early and offers great chocolate croissants, muffins and aromatic coffee. If you're in for breakfast, the Cast Iron Skillets or Benedicts are just what you need. The lunch and dinner menus cover a good range of pasta, salads and steaks. It may say 1886, but step in and you know, it's still Austin chic.

This cafe, tucked away just west of Lamar Boulevard, is a pleasant destination for a gourmet lunch. The restaurant largely serves Hyde Park and Rosedale area professionals and residents. The interior is comfortable and intimate, with a number of tables scattered about its two open rooms. The decor is very simple, and the area is bright and inviting. It is quite popular with the lunch crowd, providing a relaxing escape from work. The menu is broad, with gourmet salads, Boar's Head meat and specialty sandwiches, quesadillas and pizzas. Everything served is homemade. Daily blue plate special includes items like chicken chalupas or fresh pasta. This is quick, fairly inexpensive gourmet fare.

Despite its name, this is a full-scale restaurant offers more than just coffee. The menu happens to be one of the most extensive in town and covers breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast includes an assortment of American favorites as well as soft tacos. Lunch and dinner offer everything from salads, soups and sandwiches, two vegetarian entrees, burgers and pasta - with the Tomatillo Crawfish Pasta at $9.45 - an excellent choice. Fresh-baked desserts are also available, as is a selection of beer and wine. Customers can keep it casual inside or on the patio while dining in this wooden frame house.

Azul

Austin, TX 78702

+1 512 457 9074
Looking comfortable under the cypress trees in an old two story townhouse, Azul is first and foremost a sandwicheria. Sure, they stock Hipster beers and some reds and whites, but when you're at Azul, you come for the eggs, meat and sandwiches. It feels a bit like a tapas bar, where you can sample bits, and the platter tray's a good bet. However, there's nothing meager about the pork tenderloin sandwich, the prosciutto filled PLT and the Mediterranean Tuna melt. Have more than your fair share, call for a cup of coffee and enjoy your siesta on the outdoor patio as the music lulls you to sleep.

Billy's on Burnet is your around the corner friendly neighborhood beer and burger hangout. A place to kick back, let your hair down and sip the local brews which go great with the chicken wings and fries. That doesn't mean that the food here is worth a pass. Billy's on Burnet are partial to burgers, with the Ends and the Schults being named after a local band and their lead singer(no clue about Reuben the sandwich). The daily lunch specials have regular names like meatballs and meatloaf, but standing out is The Vegetarian. Amongst the fans, the football freaks and the kind who love their laptop, even those standing out blend in well. That's Billy's for you.

Some call this cafe on the edge of the University of Texas campus the (non-alcoholic) Cheers for students and professors, where graduate students grab a double espresso before walking a few blocks to libraries, and professors indulge in a pre-lecture breakfast taco. The cafe offers an elaborate and moderately priced menu, including various lattes and mochas, as well as salads (try the Salad Sampler) and sandwiches. Definitely try the Masterpiece with smoked turkey. It is located on the first floor of Dobie Mall, just inside the Guadalupe Street entrance.

Founded in the 1950s, Cisco is an Austin institution. This Tex-Mex eatery has served its famous breakfast migas to the who's who. The clientele may have changed but the recipe hasn't. Migas, meaning 'crumbs' in Spanish, is made from eggs, cheese, vegetables and tortillas with black beans, chorizo and avocado chile varieties. Many a egg-hater has been converted by Cisco's migas. Cisco is also a bar, and the Bloody Mary is best had to nurse a hangover, not something you'd want to begin your day with. Migas, Fajitas and Toasted Biscuits, that's all you really need to know about Cisco.

This restaurant is decorated as a French cafe in the countryside and the patriarchal owner of this chain really does hail from France. Many of the recipes come from owner Patrick Esquerre's mother's recipe box. The Tomato Basil Soup is a big favorite during fall and winter; use it to start a meal of quiche, Roasted Chicken, wood-fired pizzas or simply a Caesar Salad. Breakfast is also served daily, and includes both hot items and pastries, along with the restaurant's signature French Roast coffee. In desserts, try Ann's Cake, an Almond Croissant or a Pecan Tart.

Sit at a wooden table, a booth, or a barstool on the white-and-black-checkered floor and taste the famous Gazpacho or vegetarian chili while waiting for your Avocado BLT. If you prefer morning grub like eggs, fries, pancakes and bacon homestyle, you have come to the right place. The Chili Con Queso Omelette is loaded with cheese and covered with jalapenos and even more cheese. Pancakes filled with blueberries, bananas, chocolate chips, pecans or raisins are another specialty. The weekends are very busy, with standing room only as a common practice.
