34th Street Cafe

Quick gourmet fare
1005 West 34th St
Austin, TX 78705
United States
+1 512 371 3400
http://www.34thstreetcafe.com/
This cafe, tucked away just west of Lamar Boulevard, is a pleasant destination for a gourmet lunch. The restaurant largely serves Hyde Park and Rosedale area professionals and residents. The interior is comfortable and intimate, with a number of tables scattered about its two open rooms. The decor is very simple, and the area is bright and inviting. It is quite popular with the lunch crowd, providing a relaxing escape from work. The menu is broad, with gourmet salads, Boar's Head meat and specialty sandwiches, quesadillas and pizzas. Everything served is homemade. Daily blue plate special includes items like chicken chalupas or fresh pasta. This is quick, fairly inexpensive gourmet fare.

Austin Diner

Have your first meal here
5408, Burnet Road
Austin, TX 78756
United States
+1 512 467 9552
The Austin Diner (earlier Laura's Bluebonnet Kitchen) comes very close to being a 50s diner cliche. The tables and chairs are vintage fifties style and a collection of vintage percolators, coffee pots and toasters catch your eye. Make yourself comfortable and a plethora of choices (from ginger pancakes to biscuits smothered in cream gravy) lie before you. The Austin Diner also makes huevos rancheros and other assorted Tex-Mex fare. The Cinnamon Rolls with warm butter glaze are a good choice; the Diner Special with its eggs, bacon, sausages, fries and biscuits is enough to feed a small convoy of bodyguards.

If you're used to a traditional cafeteria setting, be advised, things work differently at Blue Star Cafeteria. Branding themselves as a cafeteria with a twist, Blue Star serves what they call "uptown comfort food", and you don't have to stand in line holding a tray. Expect chicken fried quail, pork chops (glazed with honey), Crunchy Cod(with home made horseradish and mash potatoes)—you get the drift. The Blue Star's excellent kids menu features macaroni and cheese, pizza and other munch kin favorites. If wine is your hobby, sign up for the wine tasting(once a month), and if that's over committing, it's best to settle with a Chilean wine at the Happy Hour.

This clean, bright place is a comfortable stop for a quick meal. The sandwiches are full of flavor, the baked potatoes are huge and the salad bar is the freshest in town. A personal favorite is a one-trip salad bar and half a Plain Jane baked potato. It is just enough to put a smile on your face, but not enough to make you want to go back to your desk and sleep for the rest of the workday. This deli is consistently good and the service is well organized, so mistakes are few.

If bagels and blintzes are your pleasure, there's no better spot than Katz's, the downtown deli that is open 24 hours. Start the day with bagels and lox, come by at lunch for a corned beef sandwich and, when the late-night munchies strike, stumble in for a blintz. If you haven't ever tried a fried pickle, stop in for a peculiar treat.

Austin, TX 78731
United States
+1 512 451 1436
http://www.kerbeylanecafe.com/
It has been cloned now, three times, but the original location of this Austin icon is still the best place to eavesdrop in town. Its wonderfully diverse menu makes vegetarians and non-vegetarians go happy and healthy. The vegetables are homegrown and pesticide-free, and the beef and chicken are free-range. Breakfast features omelets, pancakes and great breakfast tacos. Prices are on the inexpensive side, ranging from USD4 to USD9 for the main course. The restaurant is open 24 hours, every day. No wonder it is an institution here. There are three other locations in the city.

Kitchen Door

The ultimate lunch destination
3730 Far West Boulevard
Austin, TX 78731
United States
+1 512 794 1100
Set up in 1976, this casual deli has maintained its standards by pleasing their customers through the years. The original outlet is in the Far West location. There is yet another outlet, located on Lake Austin. Breakfast includes kolaches served with mouthwatering sausages. The lack of inside seating doesn't affect the number of customers. The casseroles and desserts are also among the various delicacies. The signature chicken salad sandwiches made with home made bread are a hot favorite among the locals and tourists alike and are considered to be the very best in town.

Located in the La Promenade Shopping Center, it's easier to spot the Kolache Shoppe with your nose, rather than your eyes. Look for the Dallas nightclub and let the smell of fresh baked dough guide you into this days-of-yore bakery. Of Czechoslovakian origin, the Kolache Shoppe prepares its 20 odd varieties of koláče, with an assortment of meat and cream cheese fillings, all from scratch. The kolaches are ideal for breakfast or lunch, given the hefty helpings. Just make sure you don't have anything planned at the Texas Rowing Center for later in the day!

Manuel's Downtown

Great Tex-Mex
310 Congress Avenue
Austin, TX 78701
United States
+1 512 472 7555
http://www.manuels.com/
With all the black leather, neon and jazz here, one might be suspicious. Is this a trendy Mexican joint where the food takes a back seat to the slick atmosphere? The answer is a resounding "no". One bite of the Chile Relleno en Nogada is the proof; tender Pork Picadillo studded with raisins and stuffed into a roasted poblano pepper, then sauced with walnut cream. Or try the Enchiladas, Gorditas and Flautas; all make excellent choices. Sunday brunch, with live jazz, is a winner, but dinner and happy hour are the real standout events. The second location is on Jollyville Road.

Omelettry

Classic, small diner
4811 Burnet Road
Austin, TX 78756
United States
+1 512 453 5062
Since 1978, this little, friendly diner refuses to die. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner with a menu that will please the vegetarian as well as the carnivore. Sit at a wooden table, a booth, or a barstool on the white-and-black-checkered floor and taste the famous Gazpacho or vegetarian chili while waiting for your Avocado BLT. If you prefer morning grub like eggs, fries, pancakes and bacon homestyle, you have come to the right place. The Chili Con Queso Omelette is loaded with cheese and covered with jalapenos and even more cheese. Pancakes filled with blueberries, bananas, chocolate chips, pecans or raisins are another specialty. The weekends are very busy, with standing room only as a common practice. No credit cards, checks or phone-in orders accepted.

When this restaurant was forced to move from its previous location, the surrounding neighborhood got a petition together to keep the bakery. In the new location at Hancock Drive and Balcones Road, the small, family-owned bakery and coffee shop has a new clientèle that is becoming increasingly loyal everyday. From the cinnamon rolls to scones, Russell himself bakes everything on the premises, and the freshly brewed Anderson's Coffee is delicious. The Breve is especially tasty and sure to give you the wake-up call you need on your way to work. With its eclectic selection of tables and chairs, Russell's is a great place to meet for work or pleasure.

Sandy's is one of those all American cafes but this one has been around for nearly twenty years and its neon custard cone has been its trademark. So, if you want a bit of classic Americana, drive through and pick up a meal or sit at one of the picnic tables. The menu consists of mouthwatering junk food, such as Cheese burgers, which can be built on by asking for double meat, double cheese or double bun! Everything is affordable here, within a couple of bucks, the price you pay for greasy but enticing food!

This local chain that boasts the motto "fresh, fast, and healthy" offers sandwiches that taste fresher and less corporate than their competitors. Even better, the prices are affordable. Vegetarians will enjoy the Veggie Delight cold sub loaded with mushrooms, avocado, sprouts, black olives, cream cheese, onions, tomatos, and ThunderSauce — their trademark special sauce. The other subs offered are largely made up of traditional deli meats such as Smoked Chicken, Turkey, Tuna Salad, Roast Beef and Mixed Cuts. If you're looking for something lighter try a hummus sandwich or soup and salad. There are too many Austin locations to note them all here. Visit their Web site for a complete listing of locations. Look for franchise locations in the Houston area and San Antonio.
