Clay Pit

From the frying pan to the tandoor

Set in an attractive stone building, this Indian restaurant serves mostly North Indian food from the clay pit. The chef Maqbool Ahmed is the real McCoy, having served a stint at the Oberoi Hotel in New Delhi and has brought his panache for the tandoor to Austin. A must eat at this restaurant is the Tandoori platter bedecked with chicken, lamb, broccoli, tomatoes and even zucchini. As always, Indian restaurants are a haven for vegetarians and this is no exception serving Dals, Paneer and a lot of veggie curries.

Little Bombay

Vegetarian street food

Lost in a strip-mall sea of dentist offices and second-rate video stores, it might take you a while to find this street-food treasure featuring vegetarian food in the tradition of South India. The local favorite was chosen by the Austin Chronicle as Best Vegetarian. Three reasons: it is cheap, fast and like nothing you have eaten before. That is, unless you are used to pancakes twice as big as the plate, crisply fried with lentil curry and coconut salsa. Or, how about the Chole Samosa? That is two samosas soaked in chickpea gravy, topped with sweet-hot sauces, chopped onions and cilantro. Wash it down with a Masala Tea or a mango flavored yogurt drink they call Lassi. A lack of ambiance is excused by sheer authenticity.

Dip into South India

The décor leaves a lot to the imagination but the piping hot South Indian cuisine and the friendly waiters make up for the lack of style. So, dig into crisp Dosas (foot-long crispy crepe) with potato stuffing, and curries made from coconut, tamarind, green bananas, carrots and potatoes. Indian restaurants are also the ideal place for a quick snack, like samosas and bondas(lentil dumplings).

Since its opening in 1990, this Indian restaurant has been a local favorite. The tandoori lamb, chicken and seafood specialties are always a good bet, along with several spicy and mild curry dishes. One popular choice is the Barra Kebab (tandoori lamb), marinated in yogurt and spices to enhance its delicate flavor. Plenty of vegetarian entrees are available too. Fresh naan bread accompanies each entree, and wine is moderately priced. Although the atmosphere is somewhat upscale, casual to more dressy attire is acceptable.
