Alamo Drafthouse Cinema - South Lamar

Movies, Food & Beer
1120 S. Lamar Boulevard
Austin, TX 78704
United States
+1 512 476 1320
http://www.drafthouse.com
Have you always wanted to enjoy a cold beer at the movies? You can here. In fact, you will find a nice selection of both domestic and imported beers, as well as wines and champagnes. The libations help you wash down the tasty pizzas, chicken wings or cheese- and salsa-smothered nachos as you take in a flick. Children at least 6 years of age can accompany their parents; patrons must ordinarily be at least 18 to attend on their own. The theater features mostly independent films. See website for showtimes, ticketing info, menus, special event calendar, merchandise and more.

Austin's Tamale House

Inexpensive but great food
5003 Airport Boulevard
Austin, TX 78751-2708
United States
+1 512 453 9842
Small and quaint is how you can describe this place best. But don't let the small factor undermine the Mexican fare dished out here - you can actually watch them cook. Crowded with hungry students, travelers, local patrons, and professionals, the food is delicious but inexpensive. Food includes homemade salsa, breakfast tacos, migas, enchiladas, chalupas et al. You can call ahead and order - with the prices, for a whole baseball team. In spite of the demand and queue, service is quick. Note: no credit cards please.

Casa De Luz

Macrobiotic dining
1701 Toomey Road
Austin, TX 78704
United States
+1 512 476 2535
http://www.casadeluz.org/
Serving macrobiotic food in a community setting, this restaurant offers natural, organic, vegan meals. One complete, balanced macrobiotic meal is created for lunch and another completely different meal will be offered for dinner. You will not find a menu, as the chef plans meals daily based on the seasons. The cooks work continuously during each meal to keep the fresh food coming, as you may go back for "seconds" as often as you like. The fresh steamed greens with almond sauce are a personal favorite of many patrons. Its environment is spacious and airy with many windows surrounding the dining area. There is even a "silent table" where guests may eat without being disturbed. Check out the weekend brunch where you can explore tofu migas, or spelt pancakes with berries.

Central Market Cafe

Casual restaurant
4001 North Lamar Blvd
Austin, TX 78756
United States
+1 512 206 1000
http://www.centralmarket.com/c...
Whether it's a quick lunch or leisurely dinner on the deck, this cafe goes way beyond expectations for a grocery-store eatery. As Central Market is no ordinary grocery store, so Cafe on the Run is no pedestrian deli. Soups, salads and sandwiches are all executed with creative flair; for instance, the roast beef sandwich is dressed up with Brie, and the turkey with Havarti. Ingredients are fresh, and most of them are available at the adjacent grocery. And if you don't want to exercise your sweet tooth, stay away from the bakery case. The Creme Brulee and Italian Cream Cake will tempt you every time.

Dot's Place

Get Doted On
13805 Orchid Lane
Austin, TX 78751
United States
+1 512 255-7288
http://www.dotsplace.net/index...
Run by a sweet old grandma whose chief desire is to fatten people up, Dot's Place takes comfort food cooking back to its rustic roots. Though the menu itself is an anarchic jumble consisting of whatever it is that Granny Dot feels inclined to cook up on any given day, one may generally depend on the availability of chicken 'n' dumplings, fried catfish, and meatloaf; sides are vegetable-heavy and made up mostly of such southern staples as mashed potatoes and green beans, whereas the libation of choice is, of course iced tea. And it should come as no surprise that Dot's does a brisk business in peach cobbler and sweet potato pie.

Iron Works Barbecue

Good Ol' Fashioned Barbecue
100 Red River Street
Austin, TX 78701
United States
+1 512 478 4855 / +1 800 669 3602
http://www.ironworksbbq.com/
The old Weigl family iron works no longer forges metal, but a tasty assortment of fine Texas barbecue. With walls adorned by branding irons, the motif is quintessentially Western, perhaps for the benefit of conventioners from the nearby convention center. At the counter, order your choice of sliced beef, chicken, beef ribs, pork ribs, pork loin and sausage for a two-meat combo plate completed with sides of potato salad and beans. Or make your choice of meat by the pound. The spicy sauce is a tangy counterpoint. And if you are craving barbecue somewhere far away, note that Iron Works ships their goods anywhere.

Austin, TX 78759
United States
+1 512 345 9586
http://www.jasonsdeli.com/
This clean, bright place is a comfortable stop for a quick meal. The sandwiches are full of flavor, the baked potatoes are huge and the salad bar is the freshest in town. A personal favorite is a one-trip salad bar and half a Plain Jane baked potato. It is just enough to put a smile on your face, but not enough to make you want to go back to your desk and sleep for the rest of the workday. This deli is consistently good and the service is well organized, so mistakes are few.

Austin, TX 78759
United States

This restaurant is decorated as a French cafe in the countryside and the patriarchal owner of this chain really does hail from France. Many of the recipes come from owner Patrick Esquerre's mother's recipe box. The Tomato Basil Soup is a big favorite during fall and winter; use it to start a meal of quiche, Roasted Chicken, wood-fired pizzas or simply a Caesar Salad. Breakfast is also served daily, and includes both hot items and pastries, along with the restaurant's signature French Roast coffee. In desserts, try Ann's Cake, an Almond Croissant or a Pecan Tart.

When this restaurant was forced to move from its previous location, the surrounding neighborhood got a petition together to keep the bakery. In the new location at Hancock Drive and Balcones Road, the small, family-owned bakery and coffee shop has a new clientèle that is becoming increasingly loyal everyday. From the cinnamon rolls to scones, Russell himself bakes everything on the premises, and the freshly brewed Anderson's Coffee is delicious. The Breve is especially tasty and sure to give you the wake-up call you need on your way to work. With its eclectic selection of tables and chairs, Russell's is a great place to meet for work or pleasure.

Thai Kitchen

Thai food with personality
3009 Guadalupe St
Austin, TX 78705
United States
+1 512 474 2575
If spice is what you are looking for, this is the place. Thai Kitchen is one of the best places in Austin to liven up your taste buds with some unusual ethnic fare. The extensive menu denotes the degree of spice in each dish (fried curry rice to vermicelli stir-frys) and the four-pepper dishes will have you drinking more water than usual. Highly recommended, the Ba Mi Num soup, made with chicken broth, ginger, cilantro, lime, bean sprouts and your choice of meat, is a pleasant way to cure the sniffles. And although the wait staff seems a little gruff at times, it may be because the place is so packed, but do not let that stop you. This is a great place for anyone seeking a nice, hot bowl of something tasty.
