Austin Pizza Garden

Gourmet pizza, beer and wine
6266 Highway 290 W
Austin, TX 78735
United States
+1 512 891 9980
The owners of this family-operated restaurant near the "Y" at Oak Hill previously ran a pizzeria voted the best in Indianapolis for 13 consecutive years. Their experience shows, as folks come for miles to try their authentic New York-style pizza. The century-old historic stone building is hard to miss, with a classic interior best described as casual, family-style Italian. The extensive menu offers a long line of signature pizzas, with Mexican, Hawaiian, Texas, and Greek varieties alongside familiar Italian pies. Also available are great salads, lasagna, stromboli and sandwiches overflowing with Italian meats and cheeses. A list of domestic and imported beer and vintage wine rounds out the selection.

For a company specializing in fine cuts, opening a restaurant seems like the next step. How better to showcase your wares than on a diner's plate? People swear by the Southside Market Elgin Hot Sausage in these parts and the BBQ restaurant manages to top it with their Texas style barbecue. Beef and pork ribs, turkey, mutton and chicken are all slow cooked and seasoned to perfection. Add to it a side order of beans, pickle or coleslaw and you have all the makings of comfort food. If the grease and spice get to you, the Blue Bell ice-cream hits the spot. The barbecue is also served by the pound and there's a variety of souvenir caps and t-shirts to choose from.

United States
+1 512 346 8228
http://www.bellagioitalianbist...
The one problem in Austin is the lack of immigrant Italians and fine authentic Italian cuisine. The Bellagio has taken care of both. It may be in a strip mall of sorts, but don't be fooled. Step into the spacious restaurant; a look at the elegant art and sculpture that fill the interior would tell you that Bellagio is definitely upscale. Try the risotto or the calamari Bellagio, accompanied by a host of wines and you'll know you're in Little Italy. The Happy Hour at Bellagio has appetizers at half the normal price, but why taste just the icing when you can have the whole cake?

Priding itself on fresh, homemade food, this South Austin restaurant regularly enters its salsa in the local "Hot Sauce Challenge" and has won several times. The atmosphere is low-key and casual, making it a pleasant place for conversation or more festive gatherings. You will find a variety of enchilada plates as well as tacos, migas, tamales, and much more. It also offers somewhat more exotic and costly "national Mexican" cuisine, including marinated cabrito (goat), guisada (tender beef) sauteed in ancho sauce, and tuna steak with chile sauce. Stop by this eatery if you are interested in sipping coffee with pancakes while you enjoy a scenic view, or chowing down on some serious lunch specials a bit later in the afternoon. Cafe Java, an alternate mode of operation, gives the place a nice coffeehouse ambiance, but does not interfere with the tasty items on the main menu.

http://www.dotsplace.net/index...
Run by a sweet old grandma whose chief desire is to fatten people up, Dot's Place takes comfort food cooking back to its rustic roots. Though the menu itself is an anarchic jumble consisting of whatever it is that Granny Dot feels inclined to cook up on any given day, one may generally depend on the availability of chicken 'n' dumplings, fried catfish, and meatloaf; sides are vegetable-heavy and made up mostly of such southern staples as mashed potatoes and green beans, whereas the libation of choice is, of course iced tea. And it should come as no surprise that Dot's does a brisk business in peach cobbler and sweet potato pie.

With places like Maiko, Kyoto and Kenichi, one certainly isn't starved for sushi choices in Austin. It's easy to overlook Dragon Gate, but don't pass up this Phoenix Pai restaurant as easily. The touchstone of a good sushi restaurant is its Hamachi, and Dragon Gate executes it with finesse. The traditional Japanese and Chinese specials are praiseworthy, and the Tepanyaki bar adds to the contemporary chic aesthetic.

A Hill Country limestone cottage converted to an elegant restaurant? Yes, it can be done, and done well. This is a favorite spot for romantics of all stripes, who come for the harp music and relaxing, three-hour dinners. A prix-fixe menu is available, as well as an a la carte menu. The prix-fixe dinner includes bread, salad, appetizer, entree and dessert, and is uniformly well-executed. The Chateaubriand melts in your mouth, and the truffle-topped Tenderloin Medallions are extraordinary. Desserts are second-rate, but who has room for them anyway?

Evangeline's Cafe gets its name from a Longfellow poem and you're forgiven if you're surprised. True, the stuffed animals and neon beer signs don't say Longfellow but diners don't come here expecting a romantic setting for two either. It's for the food and the live music. The kitchen at Evangeline's holds its own in the cajun and creole department, the signature dishes being the gumbo and the crawfish, both with ample meat and cheese. The cafe features new acts every night and the dancing is sure to help you burn some calories. Ignore the no frills impression that you get when you first walk into Evangeline's Cafe and you're guaranteed to have a good time.

Instead of those tired old Crab cakes, try Omar's Rattlesnake Cakes. Sample rabbit, javelina, boar or venison one at a time, or get a mixed Grill Platter for a varied feast. Located just outside the city in the hill country, Iguana Grill offers customers great lakeside views while they have a few drinks and enjoy cuisine from the interior of Mexico. Dishes are moderately priced, and the menu is weighted towards seafood. For instance, the Cerviche Al Estilo Yucateca which is yellow tuna marinated in lime juice with pico de gallo and the Rainbow Trout Vera Cruz consists of grilled trout topped with spicy tomatoes, olives and onions. As an alternative, the Carnitas a la Parrilla is marinated and grilled beef steak or chicken tenderloins with a smoked chipotle sauce. When you visit, you will smell the scrumptious baked goods as soon as you open the door. Menu items include such Austin brunch favorites as migas and breakfast tacos, and more refined fare such as salads and pastas. The tortilla soup has a distinctive flavor, and the chocolate meringue pie is not to be missed. This is a popular spot, so expect to wait during peak times, such as weekends.

Ventana

Simply great food
11400 Burnet Road
Texas Culinary Academy
Austin, TX 78758
United States
+1 512 339 3850
http://www.tca.edu/restaurant.asp
This restaurant is more like a classroom, where a bunch of Texas Culinary Academy students take over and prepare incredible French delicacies. You can expect to find the likes of Trout Meuniere, Croque Madame, Pate Maison, Baked Brie, and Tuna Bearnaise on the menu. Whether the students are overworked or plain tired, it doesn't show, because the service is flawless and these prep chefs do a great job with the ingredients. The wine list is also impressive. There's always something to learn, for both students and visitors. So don't give this place a miss.
