Classic Tex-Mex with vegetable entrees |
2600 E Seventh Street Austin, TX 78702 United States +1 512 477 4701 http://www.aztecarestaurant.com/ |
Classic Tex-Mex food can be difficult to find in this era of concept chain restaurants hawking bland versions of the real thing. Once you discover this place, however, you will search no longer. Basic, time-honored Mexican combination plates join ranks here with Interior Mexican specialties and an extensive selection of vegetarian choices. Cheese Enchiladas with Salsa Verde are so good, they're comforting, and classic Chile Con Queso cannot be beaten. Chile Rellenos, Fajitas and other standards are reliably tasty as well. Aztec heroes and heroines, emblazoned on black velvet, keep you company while you dine. Take home an Aztec calendar to remind yourself to return. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Wake up & smell the coffee |
1501 South 1st Street Austin, TX 78705 United States +1 512 416 1601 http://www.bouldincreek.com/ |
If you think that this coffeehouse serves only coffee and breakfast, then you're wrong. Boulder Creek serves breakfast, lunch and dinner but the menu here is strictly vegetarian. Stuffed Bouldin House Omelet and Homey Aaric's Baked Oatmeal are the specialties here. For drinks, try the Chai(tea) Latte and the Honey Lemonade. Leslie Martin, the owner offers the best multi-cultural menu at reasonable prices. Parking facility is available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Macrobiotic dining |
1701 Toomey Road Austin, TX 78704 United States +1 512 476 2535 http://www.casadeluz.org/ |
Serving macrobiotic food in a community setting, this restaurant offers natural, organic, vegan meals. One complete, balanced macrobiotic meal is created for lunch and another completely different meal will be offered for dinner. You will not find a menu, as the chef plans meals daily based on the seasons. The cooks work continuously during each meal to keep the fresh food coming, as you may go back for "seconds" as often as you like. The fresh steamed greens with almond sauce are a personal favorite of many patrons. Its environment is spacious and airy with many windows surrounding the dining area. There is even a "silent table" where guests may eat without being disturbed. Check out the weekend brunch where you can explore tofu migas, or spelt pancakes with berries. Review © 2007, Wcities |

2113 Manor Road Austin, TX 78722 United States +1 512 476 5858 http://www.eastsidecafeaustin.... |
The central feature of this cozy cafe is not indoors, but out back, it is a kitchen garden overflowing with the herbs and vegetables that populate the menu every day. Cleverly integrated into soups, side dishes, appetizers and entrees. The soups are standouts, and the ever-changing selection of side dishes keeps the menu fresh. Half orders are available for those with a smaller appetite. While you wait for a table, browse Pitchforks & Tablespoons, the garden and kitchen shop on the grounds. Review © 2007, Wcities |

It won't make a hole in your pocket! |
2728 South Congress Avenue Austin, TX 78745 United States +1 512 851 9300 http://www.hillscafe.com |
This cafe is one of the hottest spots to mingle, at Austin. The Hills are alive with the sound of music, food and attentive service. Dig into the succulent sizzler's, salads, soups, barbecues; the wine list is endless and the menu includes both lunch and dinner. Located very conveniently near the Austin Bergstrum International Airport, climb those hills, it's worth it. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Austin's favorite organic eatery |
3704 Kerbey Lane Austin, TX 78731 United States +1 512 451 1436 http://www.kerbeylanecafe.com/ |
It has been cloned now, three times, but the original location of this Austin icon is still the best place to eavesdrop in town. Its wonderfully diverse menu makes vegetarians and non-vegetarians go happy and healthy. The vegetables are homegrown and pesticide-free, and the beef and chicken are free-range. Breakfast features omelets, pancakes and great breakfast tacos. Prices are on the inexpensive side, ranging from USD4 to USD9 for the main course. The restaurant is open 24 hours, every day. No wonder it is an institution here. There are three other locations in the city. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Vegetarian street food |
9616 North Lamar Blvd Suite 195 Austin, TX 78753 United States +1 512 339 0808 |
Lost in a strip-mall sea of dentist offices and second-rate video stores, it might take you a while to find this street-food treasure featuring vegetarian food in the tradition of South India. The local favorite was chosen by the Austin Chronicle as Best Vegetarian. Three reasons: it is cheap, fast and like nothing you have eaten before. That is, unless you are used to pancakes twice as big as the plate, crisply fried with lentil curry and coconut salsa. Or, how about the Chole Samosa? That is two samosas soaked in chickpea gravy, topped with sweet-hot sauces, chopped onions and cilantro. Wash it down with a Masala Tea or a mango flavored yogurt drink they call Lassi. A lack of ambiance is excused by sheer authenticity. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Vegetarian comfort food |
4215 Duval St Austin, TX 78751 United States +1 512 451 3994 http://www.motherscafeaustin.com/ |
Vegetarian food may not have the Texas pedigree of barbecued ribs or tacos al carbon, but at Mother's Cafe and Garden at Hyde Park, it is as toothsome as any native cuisine. Besides, this is as vegetarian a town as Texas can boast, so sampling spinach lasagna or even tofu barbecue is an essential part of the Austin experience. The menu runs the gamut from butter-and-cheese-laden dishes to skinnier choices, such as brown rice and vegetables. Such an accommodating list of dishes is an indication of the laid-back, cozy atmosphere here, where everyone is welcome, and everyone leaves satisfied. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Vegetarian Mexican food |
1901 E Cesar Chavez Austin, TX 78702 United States +1 512 477 5228 http://www.mrnatural-austin.com/ |
This family-owned vegetarian Mexican restaurant/bakery is fresh and authentic. Its location in East Austin makes it a bit out of the way, but the food is definitely worth your time. Try the tamales, vegetarian enchiladas, or the veggie-chorizo tacos—even meat lovers will leave satisfied. After your meal, have a sweet potato empanada, a smoothie, vegan cookies, a slice of pumpkin, cherry or strawberry pie, or a piece of cheesecake. Special orders for baked goods are welcome year-round. It is also a full-service natural foods and vitamin shop, where you will find a variety of herbs and supplements. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Classic, small diner |
4811 Burnet Road Austin, TX 78756 United States +1 512 453 5062 |
Since 1978, this little, friendly diner refuses to die. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner with a menu that will please the vegetarian as well as the carnivore. Sit at a wooden table, a booth, or a barstool on the white-and-black-checkered floor and taste the famous Gazpacho or vegetarian chili while waiting for your Avocado BLT. If you prefer morning grub like eggs, fries, pancakes and bacon homestyle, you have come to the right place. The Chili Con Queso Omelette is loaded with cheese and covered with jalapenos and even more cheese. Pancakes filled with blueberries, bananas, chocolate chips, pecans or raisins are another specialty. The weekends are very busy, with standing room only as a common practice. No credit cards, checks or phone-in orders accepted. Review © 2007, Wcities |
