Western wear institution |
1522 S. Congress Avenue Austin, TX 78704 United States +1 512 447 1413 http://www.allensboots.com |
Smack in the middle of the funky shops reviving this South Congress shopping district lies an old-fashioned Western store that's been here for years. The tan stucco exterior is pretty non-descript, but the boot-emblazoned sign by the door leaves no doubt as to Allen's leanings. This is a serious shop for serious Western wear, from the Wranglers to Justin boots and more. This is where you can grab a classic Resistol hat and a pair of ropers, or a fancier set of lizard or snake skin boots. Fancy duds are available, but so are serious work clothes. While urban cowboys are welcome to shop here, the store caters to the real thing, too. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Upon viewing the curious building that houses Room Service, complete with a rooftop sculpture of an oversize, purple easy chair, aficionados of retro chic will feel right at home. The furniture department offers the most interesting items in the store. In fact, you will often find some of them reserved as movie props for locally produced films. It also offers a fairly small collection of vintage men and women clothing. Whimsical knickknacks from yesteryear abound. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Upscale women's variety store |
4001 North Lamar Blvd Austin, TX 78756 United States +1 512 452 4220 http://www.scarbroughs.com/ |
Serving Austin since 1890, Scarbrough's was formerly located in Austin's first skyscraper, the historic Scarbrough Building on Congress. Originally a full-service department store, this family-owned specialty boutique now carries items for women only. Their inventory includes casual wear, cosmetics, shoes, jewelry, sportswear and after-five formal wear. This one-stop shopping site in the upscale Central Park Shopping Center is vastly preferable to a mall department store outing any day. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Retro/skate/surf fashion |
2025 Guadalupe St Dobie Mall Austin, TX 78705 United States +1 512 476 1672 |
Stepping into this small shop is like being in the dressing room for a fashion shoot. These are extremely stylish clothes for younger men that are surprisingly affordable. The style is street-skate-surf-retro-smooth, not every guy can pull it off, but those who can wear it well. Designers include BC Ethic, Filter, Fossil, Vans, Johnny Suede, Dickies and more. Mixed in with the cool threads are all kinds of curios, namely stickers, wallets, dancing dashboard hula girls, Mexican wrestling masks, inflatable clocks and so on. Review © 2007, Wcities |

For fine silver jewelry and folk art you might want to start here. This unique store also carries a beautiful assortment of amber, semi-precious animal fetishes, masks and those folksy painted wooden animals called alebrijes that are ubiquitous throughout the Southwest. The sign on the door says Axl Rose, Vanessa Redgrave, Don Henley and Ann Richards all shop here, so ask the proprietors what is hot for celebrity impulse buys. Review © 2007, Wcities |
